Questions

Soil resource heterogeneity influences the outcome of plant–plant interactions and, consequently, species co-existence and diversity patterns. The magnitude and direction of heterogeneity effects vary widely, and the processes underlying such variations are not fully understood. In this study, we explored how and under what resource conditions small-scale heterogeneity modulates grassland plant diversity.

Location

Oderhänge Mallnow, Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany.

Methods

We expanded the individual-based plant community model (IBC-grass) to incorporate dynamic below-ground resource maps, simulating spatial heterogeneity of resource availability. Empirical centimeter-scale data of soil C/N ratio were integrated into the model, accounting for both configurational and compositional heterogeneity. We then analyzed the interplay between small-scale heterogeneity and resource availability on the interaction and co-existence of plant species and overall diversity.

Results

Our results showed significant differences between the low- and high-resource scenarios, with both configurational and compositional heterogeneity having a positive effect on species richness and Simpson's diversity, but only under low-resource conditions. As compositional heterogeneity in the fine-scale C/N ratio increased, we observed a positive shift in Simpson's diversity and species richness, with the highest effects at the highest level of variability tested. We observed little to no effect in nutrient-rich scenarios, and a shift to negative effects at the intermediate resource level. The study demonstrates that site-specific resource levels underpin how fine-scale heterogeneity influences plant diversity and species co-existence, and partly explains the divergent effects recorded in different empirical studies.

Conclusions

This study provides mechanistic insights into the complex relationship between resource heterogeneity and diversity patterns. It highlights the context-dependent effects of small-scale heterogeneity, which can be positive under low-resource, neutral under high-resource, and negative under intermediate-resource conditions. These findings provide a foundation for future investigations into small-scale heterogeneity–diversity relationships, contributing to a deeper understanding of the processes that promote species co-existence in plant communities.  相似文献

Within the goal of defining indicators (species or combinations of life history traits) for habitat quality in an urban environment we investigated effects of urbanization on the community composition and morphological characteristics of carabid beetles. Between May and July 2000 nine woodlots were sampled along three axes representing urban - rural gradients from the centre of the city of Hamburg to its rural borders. Species richness decreased towards the city centre and with increasing isolation of the sites but was uncorrelated with the size of the site. Species assemblages were highly nested making successive loss of species predictable. Responsivness towards urbanization could not be linked to specific life history traits. Body length of one species (Carabus nemoralis) declined towards the city centre. Four species were found at all sites. These four species showed differences in fluctuating asymmetry (FA) at the different sites that could not be interpreted as an indication of responses to habitat suitability. FA of the remaining species (species negatively affected by urbanization) increased towards the city centre and with increasing isolation of a site. This matched the prediction that FA indicates habitat quality. Thus, urban effects lead to changes of communities through a predictable loss of species, to a reduction in body size in one species, and to increased FA in species which are susceptible to urbanization. The results indicate that the different sites were islands in an urban matrix rather than parts of a green network which would allow free exchange of plants and animals within the city of Hamburg.Wir untersuchten den Einfluss von Verstädterung auf Laufkäfergemeinschaften in Hamburg, Deutschland. Zwischen Mai und Juli 2000 wurden neun Fangorte entlang städtischer Gradienten beprobt. die von relativ ländlichen Gebieten an den Stadtgrenzen, bis hin zu Flächen im Stadtzentrum reichten. Die Artenzahl korrelierte negativ mit dem Grad der Isolierung und der Entfernung des Gebietes von der Peripherie, aber nicht mit der Größe eines Gebietes. Die gefundenen Artengemeinschaften wiesen strenge Schachtelung auf. Der Verlust bestimmter Arten war daher vorhersagbar, konnte aber nicht auf bestimmte Charakteristika (“life history traits”) der Arten zurückgeführt werden. Die Körperlänge von Carabus nemoralis nahm entlang des Gradienten ab. Nur vier Arten kamen im gesamten Stadtgebiet vor. Fluktuierende Asymmetrien (FA) dieser Arten konnten nicht sinnvoll mit Habitatqualitäten oder Verstädterung in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Die anderen Arten, die nach den Ergebnissen der Analysen zu geschachtelten Strukturen durch “Verstädterung” negativ beeinflusst waren (d.h. nicht an allen Orten und vor allem nicht im Stadtzentrum gefunden worden waren) zeigten zunehmende FA zum Stadtzentrum. Verstädterung führte demnach zu vorhersagbaren Verlust an Arten, zu Reduktion der Körperlänge einer Art und zu erhöhten Asymmetrien bei Arten, die durch Verstädterung negativ beeinflusst wurden. Nach diesen Befunden kann das Ziel der offiziellen Politik, in Hamburg negative Effekte der Stadtentwicklung auf die Biodiversität durch einen Verbund von Grünflächen und geschützten Gebieten zu reduzieren, mit den heute noch verfügbaren Flächen nicht erreicht werden.  相似文献

Contractile forces exerted on the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) lead to the alignment and stretching of constituent fibers within the vicinity of cells. As a consequence, the matrix reorganizes to form thick bundles of aligned fibers that enable force transmission over distances larger than the size of the cells. Contractile force-mediated remodeling of ECM fibers has bearing on a number of physiologic and pathophysiologic phenomena. In this work, we present a computational model to capture cell-mediated remodeling within fibrous matrices using finite element–based discrete fiber network simulations. The model is shown to accurately capture collagen alignment, heterogeneous deformations, and long-range force transmission observed experimentally. The zone of mechanical influence surrounding a single contractile cell and the interaction between two cells are predicted from the strain-induced alignment of fibers. Through parametric studies, the effect of cell contractility and cell shape anisotropy on matrix remodeling and force transmission are quantified and summarized in a phase diagram. For highly contractile and elongated cells, we find a sensing distance that is ten times the cell size, in agreement with experimental observations.  相似文献

Preeclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity and its pathogenesis is not fully understood. B-cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6), a key regulator of B-lymphocyte development, is altered in preeclamptic placentas. We show here that BCL6 is present in all 3 studied trophoblast cell lines and it is predominantly expressed in trophoblastic HTR-8/SVneo cells derived from a 1st trimester placenta, suggestive of its involvement in trophoblast expansion in the early stage of placental development. BCL6 is strongly stabilized upon stress stimulation. Inhibition of BCL6, by administrating either small interfering RNA or a specific small molecule inhibitor 79–6, reduces proliferation and induces apoptosis in trophoblastic cells. Intriguingly, depletion of BCL6 in HTR-8/SVneo cells results in a mitotic arrest associated with mitotic defects in centrosome integrity, indicative of its involvement in mitotic progression. Thus, like in haematopoietic cells and breast cancer cells, BCL6 promotes proliferation and facilitates survival of trophoblasts under stress situation. Further studies are required to decipher its molecular roles in differentiation, migration and the fusion process of trophoblasts. Whether increased BCL6 observed in preeclamptic placentas is one of the causes or the consequences of preeclampsia warrants further investigations in vivo and in vitro.  相似文献

Dryas octopetala has heliotropic flowers, whose petals reflect the light on the pistils, thus warming them up. The effects of this reflection on seed formation and development were studied by measuring the pistil temperature of intact flowers, of flowers with petals removed, of shaded flowers, and of flowers constrained in such a way as always to be directed towards the zenith. In August, the seeds of these flowers were collected, counted and weighed. The temperature differences between the differently treated flowers were greates about noon, the flowers ranking as follows in ascending order of temperature: shaded flowers, flowers without petals, constrained flowers and intact flowers. The mean temperature differences between the gynoecia and the air, in degrees Celsius, were: 1.1, 1.8, 2.5 and 3.2, respectively. The same ranking was obtained for the different treatments, when arranged in order of ascending weight per seed, except that the positions of the shaded flowers and the flowers without petals were interchanged. The mean values of the weight per seed in milligrams were: 0.42, 0.48, 0.53 and 0.61 for the groups flowers without petals, shaded flowers, constrained flowers and intact flowers, respectively.  相似文献

The regulation of the energy metabolism is crucial to ensure the functionality of the entire organism. Deregulations may lead to severe pathologies such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The decisive role of the brain as the active controller and heavy consumer in the complex whole body energy metabolism is the matter of recent research. Latest studies suggest that the brain's energy supply has the highest priority while all organs in the organism compete for the available energy resources. In our novel mathematical model, we address these new findings. We integrate energy fluxes and their control signals such as glucose fluxes, insulin signals as well as the ingestion momentum in our new dynamical system. As a novel characteristic, the hormone insulin is regarded as central feedback signal of the brain. Hereby, our model particularly contains the competition for energy between brain and body periphery. The analytical investigation of the presented dynamical system shows a stable long-term behavior of the entire energy metabolism while short time observations demonstrate the typical oscillating blood glucose variations as a consequence of food intake. Our simulation results demonstrate a realistic behavior even in situations like exercise or exhaustion, and key elements like the brain's preeminence are reflected. The presented dynamical system is a step towards a systemic understanding of the human energy metabolism and thus may shed light to defects causing diseases based on deregulations in the energy metabolism.  相似文献

Photosynthetic manipulation provides new opportunities for enhancing crop yield. However, understanding and quantifying the importance of individual and multiple manipulations on the seasonal biomass growth and yield performance of target crops across variable production environments is limited. Using a state-of-the-art cross-scale model in the APSIM platform we predicted the impact of altering photosynthesis on the enzyme-limited (Ac) and electron transport-limited (Aj) rates, seasonal dynamics in canopy photosynthesis, biomass growth, and yield formation via large multiyear-by-location crop growth simulations. A broad list of promising strategies to improve photosynthesis for C3 wheat and C4 sorghum were simulated. In the top decile of seasonal outcomes, yield gains were predicted to be modest, ranging between 0% and 8%, depending on the manipulation and crop type. We report how photosynthetic enhancement can affect the timing and severity of water and nitrogen stress on the growing crop, resulting in nonintuitive seasonal crop dynamics and yield outcomes. We predicted that strategies enhancing Ac alone generate more consistent but smaller yield gains across all water and nitrogen environments, Aj enhancement alone generates larger gains but is undesirable in more marginal environments. Large increases in both Ac and Aj generate the highest gains across all environments. Yield outcomes of the tested manipulation strategies were predicted and compared for realistic Australian wheat and sorghum production. This study uniquely unpacks complex cross-scale interactions between photosynthesis and seasonal crop dynamics and improves understanding and quantification of the potential impact of photosynthesis traits (or lack of it) for crop improvement research.  相似文献

Abstract: The pharmacological properties of acetylarsenocholine, an arsenic analogue of acetylcholine, were investigated. Acetylarsenocholine behaved as a cholinergic ligand both in the central and peripheral nervous system. It bound to nicotinic receptors in rat medulla-pons with a K D of 15 μ M and to muscarinic receptors in rat cerebral cortex with a K D of 10 μ M . It behaved also as an agonist at presynaptic muscarinic receptors in guinea pig ileum myenteric plexus preparation. Arsenocholine is an alternative substrate for choline acetyltransferase and acetylarsenocholine is an alternative substrate for acetylcholinesterase.  相似文献
