The Sattoki strain of species A of the taxon Anopheles culicifacies Giles was infected with 15 different strains of Plasmodium vivax from Asia, New Guinea, and Central and South America. A comparison of the relative infectivity indicated a marked variation for the different strains of P. vivax when compared to Anopheles freeborni mosquitoes.  相似文献

We have previously identified 11 epitopes located in two topologically nonoverlapping antigenic sites (A and B) and a third bridging site (C) on the human type 3 parainfluenza virus (PIV3) hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) glycoprotein by using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) which inhibit hemagglutination and virus infectivity (K. L. Coelingh, C. C. Winter, and B. R. Murphy, Virology 143:569-582, 1985). We have identified three additional antigenic sites (D, E, and F) on the HN molecule by competitive-binding assays of anti-HN MAbs which have no known biological activity. Epitopes in sites A, D, and F are conserved on the bovine PIV3 HN glycoprotein and also among a wide range of human isolates. The dideoxy method was used to identify nucleotide substitutions in the HN genes of antigenic variants selected with neutralizing MAbs representing epitopes in site A which are shared by human and bovine PIV3. The deduced amino acid substitutions in the variants were located in separate hydrophilic stretches of HN residues which are conserved in the primary structures of the HN proteins of both human and bovine PIV3 strains.  相似文献

Self-aggression in an adult male stumptailed monkey (Macaca arctoides) resulted in severe lower eyelid distortion, conjunctivitis and epiphora. The behavior ceased with a change in environment, but the eyelid defect, conjunctivitis and epiphora persisted, requiring corrective surgery. Surgical correction was partially successful, although the animal died due to unrelated medical problems before final correction could be accomplished.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to document the mainly chemical behaviour of two linked artificial lakes used for both stormwater management and recreation in the new town of Craigavon. Further, the understanding of their behaviour should help in their management and the design of other similar lakes.The lake mean total phosphorus (73 µg P l–1), nitrate (0.50 mg N l–1) and chlorophyll a (25 µg l–1) concentrations, Secchi depth (1.2 m) and the estimated total phosphorus loading (1.98 g m–2 a–1) all classify the main lake as eutrophic. An important source of the phosphorus load on the lakes is the urban area of Craigavon (52% of the total load). The interrelationships between total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and Secchi depth in the main lake are similar to those in natural ones. In addition, the lake follows the total phosphorus load — trophic state relationships (lake total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations and Secchi depth) found to apply elsewhere. These two points indicate that the artificial lakes in Craigavon behave similarly to natural ones.  相似文献

Transglutaminase [EC 2.3.2.13, (R)-glutaminyl-peptide:amine gamma-glutamyltransferase], an enzyme that catalyzes the introduction of glutamine-lysine cross-links into proteins, was purified. Neurofilament and microtubule proteins were substrates for this enzyme but the insoluble neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) isolated from Alzheimer's disease brain were not substrates. In vitro cross-linking of neurofilaments and microtubules by the enzyme did not produce paired helical filaments (PHF), which are the major ultrastructural component of NFT. These results make it unlikely that PHF are formed by the straightforward cross-linking of neurofilaments or microtubules.  相似文献

Regional amino acid concentrations were measured in rat brain fixed by microwave irradiation at three levels of elevated atmospheric pressure corresponding to different phases of the high-pressure neurological syndrome [20 atmospheres absolute (ATA), no clinical signs; 60 ATA, tremor; 85 ATA, severe tremor and myoclonic jerks]. No changes in amino acid content occurred at 20 or 60 ATA. At 85 ATA glutamine content increased in hippocampus, striatum, cerebellum, and substantia nigra, and gamma-aminobutyric acid content increased in hippocampus. It is suggested that enhanced glutamate release in various subcortical structures contributes to the myoclonic activity observed at 85 ATA.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that activity of respiratory muscles determines regional growth of lung parenchyma, we studied the effects of unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis on contralateral/ipsilateral lung growth in cats and piglets. Five 10- to 12-wk-old cats and five 8-wk-old piglets underwent unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis by thoracic and cervical phrenectomy, respectively. Five to seven weeks after surgery, when the cats were killed for studies of lung growth, gain in body weight was the same as in five sham-operated controls. At this time, mean pleural pressure ipsilateral to the paralyzed hemidiaphragm was the same as contralateral mean pleural pressure during tidal breathing, and values did not differ from controls. However overall functional residual capacity was lower in the phrenectomized cats (35 +/- 4 ml) than in the controls (55 +/- 11 ml, P less than 0.01). Growth of contralateral lungs relative to ipsilateral lungs was greater in the phrenectomized cats than in the controls, as shown by ratios of contralateral/ipsilateral wet lung weight (1.44 vs. 1.34, P less than 0.01), maximum inflation volume (1.53 vs. 1.33, P less than 0.05), and total protein content (1.45 vs. 1.26, P less than 0.05). Ratios of total protein to DNA and RNA to DNA were unchanged. One week after surgery in the piglets, the ratio of contralateral/ipsilateral wet lung weight was increased (1.61 vs. 1.29, P less than 0.01) and total weight of both lungs was reduced. We conclude that regional growth of lung parenchyma by cell proliferation depends in part on regional distribution of respiratory muscle activity.  相似文献

The administration of very low doses of bacterial endotoxin protects rats during exposure to hyperoxia and is associated with the induction of lung antioxidant enzyme activities. Copper-deficient rats have increased susceptibility to O2 toxicity, which may be related to their decreased lung superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) or decreased plasma ceruloplasmin concentrations. To determine whether endotoxin can protect against hyperoxia in this susceptible model, we exposed copper-deficient and control rats to a fractional inspiratory concentration of O2 greater than 0.95 for 96 h after pretreatment with 500 micrograms/kg of bacterial endotoxin or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). Mortality in the copper-deficient and control rats given PBS and exposed to O2 for 96 h was 100%. Copper-deficient rats died significantly earlier during the exposure than controls. No mortality occurred in either group treated with endotoxin and hyperoxia despite the decreased activity of copper-dependent enzymes in the copper-deficient rats. Copper-deficient rats treated with endotoxin and exposed to hyperoxia did increase lung Cu-Zn-SOD activity, but activity remained below levels found in air-exposed controls. Mn-SOD activity was found to be induced above air-exposed controls in the copper-deficient rats treated with endotoxin and exposed to hyperoxia. Hyperoxic exposure resulted in a marked increase in plasma ceruloplasmin concentrations in the control rats, but no increases in ceruloplasmin occurred in the copper-deficient animals. Endotoxin protects copper-deficient rats from hyperoxia despite their decreased lung Cu-Zn-SOD activity, and decreased plasma ceruloplasmin.  相似文献

We have recorded the near- and far-ultraviolet circular dichroism spectra of diphtheria toxin, Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin A, and derivatives of these toxins. The far-ultraviolet spectra of various forms of diphtheria toxin were virtually identical, implying that no major changes in secondary structure accompany proteolytic nicking or dimerization of toxin, or binding of the endogenous dinucleotide, adenylyl-(3'-5')-uridine 3'-monophosphate (AdoPUrdP). Alpha-helix content was estimated to be 29%, as compared with 8% for fragment A. Near-ultraviolet spectra were identical between nicked and intact diphtheria toxin. A broad negative transition with a minimum at 304 nm was assigned to the intrachain disulfide bridge within the B moiety. Dimeric diphtheria toxin showed perturbations of aromatic residues. Binding of AdoPUrdP to monomeric diphtheria toxin or of adenylyl-(3',5')-uridine (AdoPUrd) to fragment A perturbed one or more tryptophans. The latter results correlate with evidence for involvement of a tryptophan in NAD binding. Native exotoxin A was estimated to have 16% alpha-helix, and the activated form of exotoxin A, 11%. An enzymically active, 31 kDa proteolytic fragment of exotoxin A showed similar alpha-helix content (7%) to that of diphtheria toxin fragment A.  相似文献
