In this study we investigate the use of splines and the ICP method [Besl, P., McKay, N., 1992. A method for registration of 3d shapes. IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence 14, 239-256.] for calculating the transformation parameters for a rigid body undergoing planar motion parallel to the image plane. We demonstrate the efficacy of the method by estimating the finite centre of rotation and angle of rotation from lateral flexion/extension radiographs of the lumbar spine. In an in vitro error study, the method displayed an average error of rotation of 0.44 +/- 0.45 degrees, and an average error in FCR calculation of 7.6 +/- 8.5 mm. The method was shown to be superior to that of Crisco et al. [Two-dimensional rigid-body kinematics using image contour registration. Journal of Biomechanics 28(1), 119-124.] and Brinckmann et al. In general, we believe the use of splines to represent planar shapes to be superior to using digitised curves or landmarks for several reasons. First, with appropriate software, splines require less effort to define and are a compact representation, with most vertebra outlines using less than 30 control points. Second, splines are inherently sub-pixel representations of curves, even if the control points are limited to pixel resolutions. Third, there is a well-defined method (the ICP algorithm) for registering shapes represented as splines. Finally, like digitised curves, splines are able to represent a large class of shapes with little effort, but reduce potential segmentation errors from two dimensions (parallel and perpendicular to the image gradient) to just one (parallel to the image gradient). 6-Acetyl-7,7-dimethyl-7,8-dihydropterin 3 has been shown to be able to substitute for the natural cofactor of nitric oxide synthases, tetrahydrobiopterin 1, in cells and tissues that contain active nitric oxide synthases (NOSs). In both macrophages, which produce iNOS, and endothelial cells, which produce eNOS, in which tetrahydrobiopterin biosynthesis has been blocked by inhibition of GTP cyclohydrolase 1, dihydropterin 3 restored production of nitric oxide by these cells. In tissues, 3 caused relaxation in preconstricted rat aortic rings, again in which tetrahydrobiopterin biosynthesis had been inhibited, an effect that was blocked by the NOS inhibitor, L-NAME. However, dihydropterin 3 was not itself an active cofactor in purified NOS (nNOS) preparations free of tetrahydrobiopterin suggesting that intracellular reduction to 6-acetyl-7,7-dimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropterin 4 is required for activity. Compound 4 was prepared by reduction of the corresponding 7,8-dihydropterin with sodium cyanoborohydride and has been shown to be a competent cofactor for nitric oxide production by nNOS. Together, the results show that the 7,7-dimethyl-7,8-dihydropterin is a novel structural framework for effective tetrahydrobiopterin analogues. 相似文献

Using algae to simultaneously treat wastewater and produce energy products has potential environmental and economic benefits. This study evaluates the life cycle energy, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, eutrophication potential, and cost impacts of incorporating an algal turf scrubber (ATS) into a treatment process for dairy wastewater. A life cycle inventory and cost model was developed to simulate an ATS treatment system where harvested algae would be used to generate biogas for process heat and electricity generation. Modeling results show that using an ATS significantly reduces eutrophication impacts by reducing chemical oxygen demand, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the wastewater. With low water recirculation rates through the ATS and high algae productivity, inclusion of the ATS results in net energy displacement and a reduction of GHG emissions compared to a system with no ATS. However, if high water recirculation rates are used or if algae biosolids from the digester are dried, the system results in a net increase in energy consumption and GHG emissions. The life cycle treatment cost was estimated to be $1.42 USD per cubic meter of treated wastewater. At this cost, using an ATS would only be cost effective for dairies if they received monetary credits for improved water quality on the order of $3.83 per kilogram of nitrogen and $9.57 per kilogram of phosphorus through, for example, nutrient trading programs. 相似文献

Background
The number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) is increasing in the UK. This study estimated the annual population cost of providing HIV services in the UK, 1997–2006 and projected them 2007–2013.Methods
Annual cost of HIV treatment for PLHIV by stage of HIV infection and type of ART was calculated (UK pounds, 2006 prices). Population costs were derived by multiplying the number of PLHIV by their annual cost for 1997–2006 and projected 2007–2013.Results
Average annual treatment costs across all stages of HIV infection ranged from £17,034 in 1997 to £18,087 in 2006 for PLHIV on mono-therapy and from £27,649 in 1997 to £32,322 in 2006 for those on quadruple-or-more ART. The number of PLHIV using NHS services rose from 16,075 to 52,083 in 2006 and was projected to increase to 78,370 by 2013. Annual population cost rose from £104 million in 1997 to £483 million in 2006, with a projected annual cost between £721 and £758 million by 2013. When including community care costs, costs increased from £164 million in 1997, to £683 million in 2006 and between £1,019 and £1,065 million in 2013.Conclusions
Increased number of PLHIV using NHS services resulted in rising UK population costs. Population costs are expected to continue to increase, partly due to PLHIV''s longer survival on ART and the relative lack of success of HIV preventing programs. Where possible, the cost of HIV treatment and care needs to be reduced without reducing the quality of services, and prevention programs need to become more effective. While high income countries are struggling to meet these increasing costs, middle- and lower-income countries with larger epidemics are likely to find it even more difficult to meet these increasing demands, given that they have fewer resources. 相似文献998.
When choosing a mate, women are thought to face a trade-off between genetic and parental quality. Recent research suggests that this trade-off is influenced by environmental factors such as pathogen prevalence and resource scarcity, which affect the relative value of genetic and parental quality to offspring fitness. To further investigate these findings, the current study primed 60 women with pathogen prevalence, resource scarcity or an irrelevant threat, before administering a forced trade-off task that assessed mate preferences for traits thought to be indicative of genetic or parental quality. Women primed with pathogen prevalence revealed greater preferences for traits indicative of genetic quality at the expense of traits indicative of parental quality. The reverse was found for women primed with resource scarcity. These findings suggest that environmental factors may directly influence women's mate preferences owing to evolved plasticity, such that mate preferences are flexible in response to environmental factors. 相似文献

Central to most theories that explain the diversity of life is the concept that organisms face trade-offs. Theoretical work has shown that the precise shape of a trade-off relationship affects evolutionary predictions. One common trade-off is that between competitive ability and resistance to predators, parasitoids, pathogens or herbivores. We used a microbial experimental system to elucidate the shape of the relationship between parasitoid resistance and competitive ability. For each of 86 bacteriophage-resistant isolates of the bacterium Escherichia coli B, we measured the degree of resistance to bacteriophage T2 (a viral parasitoid) and relative competitive ability in both the resource environment in which strains were isolated and in two alternate environments. We observed that environmental change can alter trade-off shape, and that different physiological mechanisms can lead to different trade-off shapes and different sensitivities to environmental change. These results highlight the important interaction between environment and trade-off shape in affecting ecological and evolutionary dynamics. 相似文献

Summary Immobilised Saccharomyces cerevisiae in batch reactors effectively removed copper from solution with a binding equilibrium of 70 % being attained within 20 minutes of contact. Maximum uptake was between pH 3 to 5 (Vmax = 24.1 mol/g) and was substantially reduced at pH 2. Bound copper was readily recovered by addition of 1.0 M HCl ( % v/v). In adsorption-desorption studies metal removal and recovery was high, and uptake was increased with repeated use. Electron microscopy confirmed that no morphological changes occur to the cells during repeated adsorption-desorption. 相似文献
