We consider a model where agents harvesting from a renewable resource can impose limitations on the harvesting efforts of other agents. Obstructing the harvesting of others comes at a cost, and is viewed as regulation of resource access. Thus, the agent population comprises agents that do not obstruct (“cooperators”) and agents that obstruct (“obstructors”). As the economically better performing strategy spreads in the population, the system self-organizes at a level of obstruction which depends on the costs of obstruction, the obstruction efficiency and the history of the system. We show that commons and anticommons can be considered as the end points of a continuum of varying degrees of obstruction and we identify three regimes for the stationary state of the evolution dynamics: (i) a state where the system ends up in a tragedy of the commons, (ii) a tragedy of the anticommons state and (iii) a moderately regulated state in between both extremes. The more a policy environment in the moderately regulated state is tuned for optimality, the higher the danger that a fluctuation destabilizes the system into severe overexploitation.  相似文献

The oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of atmospheric CO2 is among a very limited number of tools available to constrain estimates of the biospheric gross CO2 fluxes, photosynthesis and respiration at large scales. However, the accuracy of the partitioning strongly depends on the extent of isotopic disequilibrium between the signals carried by these two gross fluxes. Chamber‐based field measurements of total CO2 and CO18O fluxes from foliage and soil can help evaluate and refine our models of isotopic fractionation by plants and soils and validate the extent and pattern of isotopic disequilibrium within terrestrial ecosystems. Owing to sampling limitations in the past, such measurements have been very rare and covered only a few days. In this study, we coupled automated branch and soil chambers with tuneable diode laser absorption spectroscopy techniques to continuously capture the δ18O signals of foliage and soil CO2 exchange in a Pinus pinaster Aït forest in France. Over the growing season, we observed a seasonally persistent isotopic disequilibrium between the δ18O signatures of net CO2 fluxes from leaves and soils, except during rain events when the isotopic imbalance became temporarily weaker. Variations in the δ18O of CO2 exchanged between leaves, soil and the atmosphere were well explained by theory describing changes in the oxygen isotope composition of ecosystem water pools in response to changes in leaf transpiration and soil evaporation.  相似文献

Movements and spatial distribution of host populations are expected to shape the genetic structure of their parasite populations. Comparing the genetic patterns of both interacting species may improve our understanding of their evolutionary history. Moreover, genetic analyses of parasites with horizontal transmission may serve as indicators of historical events or current demographic processes that are not apparent in the genetic signature of their hosts. Here, we compared mitochondrial variation in populations of the ectoparasitic mite Spinturnix myoti with the genetic pattern of its host, the Maghrebian bat Myotis punicus in North Africa and in the islands of Corsica and Sardinia. Mite mitochondrial differentiation among populations was correlated with both host mitochondrial and nuclear differentiation, suggesting spatial co‐differentiation of the lineages of the two interacting species. Therefore our results suggest that parasite dispersal is exclusively mediated by host movements, with open water between landmasses as a main barrier for host and parasite dispersal. Surprisingly the unique presence of a continental European mite lineage in Corsica was inconsistent with host phylogeographical history and strongly suggests the former presence of European mouse‐eared bats on this island. Parasites may thus act as biological tags to reveal the presence of their now locally extinct host.  相似文献

This paper describes parallel and comparative experiments on the enzymatic cyclooxygenase (COX) driven conversion of arachidonic acid (AA, all-cis-5,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid) into prostaglandins by using pure arachidonic acid and AA samples containing relatively small amounts of thiyl radical induced trans-isomers. The experiments were performed in a liquid aqueous model system using COX-1 as well as by the in vitro feeding of VD(3)-differentiated and LPS-stimulated promyelocytic HL-60 cells using the cell's own COX-2. In the model solution, all the different test methods used (oxygen consumption, ROS induced luminescence, and TMPD oxidation) indicated the greatly disproportionate, non-stoichiometric inhibition of the prostaglandin metabolism by the trans-isomers. Accordingly, measurements performed in the cell system gave comparable results: both luminescence ROS detection and the ELISA test on PGE(2) expression resulted in the strong inhibition of the prostaglandin metabolism. We interpret these findings as enzyme blocking caused by just one mono-trans-isomerized double bond of AA.  相似文献

In the adrenergic system, release of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine from sympathetic nerves is regulated by presynaptic inhibitory alpha2-adrenoceptors, but it is unknown whether release of epinephrine from the adrenal gland is controlled by a similar short feedback loop. Using gene-targeted mice we demonstrate that two distinct subtypes of alpha2-adrenoceptors control release of catecholamines from sympathetic nerves (alpha 2A) and from the adrenal medulla (alpha 2C). In isolated mouse chromaffin cells, alpha2-receptor activation inhibited the electrically stimulated increase in cell capacitance (a correlate of exocytosis), voltage-activated Ca2+ current, as well as secretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine. The inhibitory effects of alpha2-agonists on cell capacitance, voltage-activated Ca2+ currents, and on catecholamine secretion were completely abolished in chromaffin cells isolated from alpha 2C-receptor-deficient mice. In vivo, deletion of sympathetic or adrenal feedback control led to increased plasma and urine norepinephrine (alpha 2A-knockout) and epinephrine levels (alpha 2C-knockout), respectively. Loss of feedback inhibition was compensated by increased tyrosine hydroxylase activity, as detected by elevated tissue dihydroxyphenylalanine levels. Thus, receptor subtype diversity in the adrenergic system has emerged to selectively control sympathetic and adrenal catecholamine secretion via distinct alpha2-adrenoceptor subtypes. Short-loop feedback inhibition of epinephrine release from the adrenal gland may represent a novel therapeutic target for diseases that arise from enhanced adrenergic stimulation.  相似文献

To estimate the potential contribution of ethological and ecological parameters to the mechanisms of species formation and species isolation in the Palearctic cicada genus Tibicina , we constructed a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis of extant Tibicina species. Seven mitochondrial genes and a fragment of a nuclear gene were sequenced (3046 bp). Mitochondrial genes included 547 informative sites but the nuclear gene was too conserved to be included in the analysis. The tree was characterized by a basal polytomy indicating that Tibicina species arose rapidly. Such rapid radiation might explain the low divergence in the acoustic communication observed between species. Parameters describing habitat selection and acoustic communication were mapped onto the tree. A shift in habitat selection accompanied by acoustic changes might have contributed to one speciation event. The stochastic distribution of the same acoustic characters on the other branches of the tree implies, however, that the subtle acoustic differences between species could be the result of previous speciation events and independent evolutionary histories, rather than having contributed themselves in the speciation and isolation processes.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 611–626.  相似文献

The endangered Uluguru Bush Shrike Malaconotus alius is a large, black-headed bush shrike, strictly endemic to the Uluguru Mountains in Tanzania. It has recently been suggested that this species has been misplaced within the genus Malaconotus and might instead be related to Malagasy Vangidae. To assess its systematic affinities, we analysed 1518 bp of sequence data obtained from a nuclear intron (myoglobin intron-2) and a mitochondrial protein-coding gene (ND2) using parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. Both genes strongly support the traditional placement within the genus Malaconotus , suggesting that similarities between the Uluguru Bush Shrike and the Vangidae are due to convergence. These results caution that taxonomic changes should not be made without a proper character analysis (i.e. assignment of character homology).  相似文献

Ustilago maydis, the causal agent of corn smut disease, displays dimorphic growth in which it alternates between a unicellular, nonpathogenic yeast-like form and a dikaryotic, pathogenic filamentous form. Previously, a constitutively filamentous haploid mutant was obtained. Complementation of this mutant led to the isolation of the gene encoding adenylate cyclase, uac1. Secondary mutagenesis of a uac1 disruption strain allowed the isolation of a large number of suppressor mutants, termed ubc, for Ustilago bypass of cyclase, lacking the filamentous phenotype. Analysis of one of these suppressor mutants previously led to the identification of the ubc1 gene, encoding the regulatory subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. In this report we describe the isolation of cosmids containing three new ubc genes, termed ubc2, ubc3, and ubc4. We also describe the morphology of the ubc2, ubc3, and ubc4 mutants in a uac1- background as well as in a background with a functional uac1 gene. In addition, we describe several mutant strains not complemented with any of the genes currently in hand and that are thus presumed to possess mutations in additional ubc genes.
