We examined the effect of posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle activity on the pressure-flow (PV) relationship of the larynx in five anesthetized tracheostomized dogs. The PCA activity was recorded using bipolar fine-wire electrodes, expressed as a percentage of the quiet breathing level and altered by mechanical ventilation, changes in lung volume, and chest wall compression. Subglottic pressure was recorded while a constant flow of air was passed through the upper airway. In the absence of PCA activity the PV relationship was alinear and could be described by a power function (P = K0Va, where K0 and a are constants). The slope of the log P-log V plots in the absence of PCA and thyroarytenoid activity was 1.83 +/- 0.02 (SD), whereas with increasing PCA activity it was 1.88 +/- 0.11. An effective hydraulic diameter (DH) was calculated for 20% increments of PCA activity, and in two dogs glottic diameter (Dg) was calculated from glottic area measurements obtained by fiber-optic laryngoscopy. Both DH and Dg increased linearly with increasing PCA activity. Denervation of the cricothyroid muscle had no systematic effect on laryngeal resistance. The results indicate that the PV relationship of the larynx may be described by a power function with a single exponent, the magnitude of which is independent of glottic dilator muscle activity and consistent with orifice flow. However, laryngeal diameter increases linearly with PCA activity in the range studied.  相似文献

The noctuid moth Spodoptera frugiperda consists of two strains associated with different larval host plants (most notably corn and rice). These strains exhibit differential temporal patterns of female calling and copulation during scotophase, with the corn strain more active earlier in the night. We investigated strain‐specific constraints in reproductive timing, mating interactions between the two strains, and the mode of inheritance of timing of female calling, male calling, copulation and oviposition. We observed an allochronic shift of all reproductive behaviours by approximately 3 h and a parallel shift of nonreproductive locomotor activity, suggesting involvement of the circadian clock. The corn strain was more variable in the timing of calling and copulation than the rice strain. Rice strain females were more restricted in the timing of copulation than rice strain males, while such differences between the sexes were not apparent in the corn strain. There were significant interactions between the strains affecting onset times of copulation and male calling. The four investigated reproductive traits differed in their modes of inheritance: timing of female and male calling exhibited strong maternal effects, timing of copulation was controlled by a combination of maternal effects and corn strain dominant autosomal factors, and timing of oviposition was inherited in a corn strain dominant fashion. We conclude that the allochronic separation of reproduction between fall armyworm strains is asymmetric, less pronounced than previously thought, and under complex genetic control.  相似文献

Mental conditions usually affect cognitive, emotional and volitional aspects and functions of the personality, which are also functions of interest in law, as they are essential at the time of adjudicating guilt, labeling the accused a criminal, and proffering a sentence. A relationship between mental illness and criminality has, thus, been described and given as one of the reasons for the large number of mental patients in prisons. Whether this relationship is one of causality or one that flows through many other variables is a matter of debate, but there is no debating that prisons have become a de facto part, and an important one, of mental health systems in many countries. This paper deals with the issue of the relationship and provides estimates of prevalence of mental patients in prisons culled from many studies in different countries. It also provides some direction for the management of mental patients as they crowd correctional systems.  相似文献

To examine the relationship between expiratory effort, expiratory flow, and glottic aperture, we compared the effects of actively and passively produced changes in flow in six normal subjects. During flow transients of 1.08 +/- 0.08 l/s produced by voluntary expiratory effort, glottic width (dg) increased by 54 +/- 13% (mean +/- SE). In contrast transient increases in expiratory flow, produced passively by chest compression, were not accompanied by increases in glottic dimensions. Similarly, when subjects expired through a resistance, transient passive increases in mouth pressure of 8.1 +/- 0.8 cmH2O failed to increase glottic width. However, when similar positive-pressure transients were produced actively, dg increased by 97 +/- 36% even though the expiratory efforts were accompanied by relatively small increases in flow (0.20 +/- 0.05 l/s). During tidal breathing glottic widening commenced 160 +/- 60 ms before the onset of inspiratory flow, whereas the widening associated with active flow and pressure transients did not measurably precede the onset of the change in flow or pressure. Our results indicate that transient expulsive efforts are associated with synchronous increases in dg, regardless of whether expiratory flow increases. The findings are most readily explained by a centrally determined synchronous recruitment of intrinsic laryngeal and expiratory muscles that facilitates lung emptying by minimizing airway resistance during forced exhalation.  相似文献

We measured the electromyographic activity of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle simultaneously with glottic width (dg) in five normal human subjects during hyperpnea induced by hypoxia (7% CO2 in N2) or hypercapnia (9% CO2 in 50% O2). The glottic aperture was measured during inspiration at the time corresponding to peak inspiratory PCA activity and during expiration at the time corresponding to the minimum tonic activity. During hyperpnea, peak and tonic PCA activity increased simultaneously with widening of the vocal cords in both phases of the respiratory cycle. The PCA activity during both inspiration and expiration showed a single curvilinear relationship with dg of the form dg = A - Be-k.PCA (where A, B, and k are constants) in three of the five subjects. At 50% of maximum PCA activity, dg already reached 95% of its maximum value, which was less than that recorded during a voluntary forced expiratory maneuver. The single curvilinear relationship between PCA activity and dg could be due to the length-tension relationship of the PCA muscle and/or changes in its mechanical coupling, as well as simultaneous agonist and antagonist laryngeal muscle activity during progressive chemical stimulation. Also, further widening of the glottis during forced expiration suggests recruitment of additional muscles, e.g., the arytenoideus.  相似文献

To examine the response of the cricothyroid muscle (CT) to increased chemical drive, we measured its electromyogram simultaneously with that of the alae nasi (AN) in seven normal awake subjects. During both progressive hyperoxic hypercapnia and hypoxia, peak integrated inspiratory activity (moving time average, MTA) of the CT and AN increased as a power function of mean inspiratory flow (ratio of tidal volume to inspiratory time, VT/TI), given by MTA = a(VT/TI)b + c (where a, b, and c are constants). The exponent b varied from 0.009 to 3.4 among subjects but was correlated between CT and AN both during hypercapnia (r = 0.86) and hypoxia (r = 0.81). The onset of inspiratory activity of the CT and AN preceded that of inspiratory flow. Expressed as a percentage of expiratory time, the CT lead time rose from 7% at rest to 20% during hyperpnea. The corresponding values for the AN were from 22 to 52% (both P less than 0.03). Thus the pattern of response of the CT and AN is similar and related to that of the inspiratory muscles in a curvilinear manner. The findings suggest that during chemical stimulation the electrical activity of the CT is analogous to that of the AN, an upper airway dilator.  相似文献

An increase in bioavailable tin in the environment could result in bioaccumulation thereof in agricultural crops, and therefore, have adverse health consequences on humans that eat these crops. The aims of the current study were thus to assess the uptake of Sn by spinach plants, and the subsequent effects this will have on the uptake of Na, Zn, K, Ca, and Mg as well as the growth of spinach plants. Spinach plants were grown in sand culture and received tin at concentrations of 0.02, 0.2, 2 and 20 mg/L along with a nutrient solution. The uptake of tin at detectible concentrations only occurred at the highest concentrations (2 and 20 mg/L), and it was mostly retained in the roots of the plants. Tin additions also resulted in no visual toxicity symptoms, and might be beneficial to biomass production. Further field trials are needed to ensure that these experimental results remain true under field conditions.  相似文献
