Abstract. Fuzzy set ordination was used to examine relationships between tree species and site factors on Mt. Ascutney, Vermont, USA. Prism plots were established at four elevations (455, 610, 760 and 915 m) along contour lines that encircled the mountain. In addition to elevation, which was the most important factor affecting tree species composition, slope, aspect and exposure to solar radiation all affected composition; however, these latter three factors were important only at 455 m. Topographic position was important at higher elevations as well. The responses of tree species to any of these factors were highly individualistic. Plots of the upper bounds of relative basal area of each species against the apparent elevation of sites where that species was found were useful in predicting how important an individual species could become over the course of forest succession. For example, northern hardwoods, which comprise the most common forest type of this region, are not very common on this mountain. This approach shows, however, that they are currently at levels well below their potential maximum; this is probably due to past disturbance.  相似文献

Summary This study examined the throughfall dynamics of high-elevation red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) and balsam fir [Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.] branches. A site was established at an elevation of 1160 m on Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, USA, and branches were collected from the canopies of mature trees. Throughfall water dynamics of branches collected in September 1988 and March 1989 were determined using a fluorescent tracer in an artificial precipitation apparatus. Water holdup capacities of spruce and fir branches from different canopy positions were similar. Spruce retained more water per unit area than fir. For rain, a three-compartment model that was used to analyze water dynamics showed that the bulk of water initially on the branch experienced very slow turnover, while intercepted water left the branch quickly. There did not appear to be any difference in throughfall dynamics between spruce and fir. Our results suggest that the initial composition of rain and mobilized dry deposition will influence the composition of water in contact with the branch for a relatively long time, as branch water composition will respond slowly to changes in precipitation composition. These predictions require field testing where sequential sampling of throughfall and precipitation occurs on a time scale equivalent to 0.1–0.2 mm of precipitation.  相似文献

Many states across the U.S. use the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) measurement as a regulatory tool for setting cleanup standards for underground storage tank sites and other petroleum‐related sites requiring cleanup. In Part 1 of this article (Michelsen and Petito Boyce, J. Soil Contam., 2(2): 109–124), alternative techniques and new methods for developing site‐specific cleanup standards for petroleum hydrocarbons were reviewed, including the use of chemical fingerprinting, constituent analysis, and human health and ecological risk assessment methods. In Part 2 of this article, the cost effectiveness and accuracy of these approaches are evaluated by comparing a generic TPH cleanup standards approach with site‐specific cleanup standards approaches for two actual sites in Washington State, a neighborhood gas station and a former bulk fuel storage facility. Based on these case studies, as well as consideration of other available approaches discussed in Part 1 of this article, recommendations are provided for selecting the most appropriate method of developing cleanup standards at a petroleum‐contaminated site.  相似文献

A kinetic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed using antigenic extracts prepared from Psoroptes cuniculi mites and sera from 37 Psoroptes sp.-infested and 43 uninfested bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). Serial dilutions of these serum samples, representing 3 bighorn sheep subspecies and 9 geographic areas, gave parallel responses when plotted as log dilution versus log kinetic rate. Therefore, all 80 samples were run at a single dilution (1:100) and positive/negative cutoff values were established as the mean kinetic rate of all negative sera plus either 2, 3, or 4 standard deviations. The resulting ELISA was highly reproducible and accurate with sensitivities and specificities of 100% and 97.7%, 94.6% and 97.7%, and 94.6% and 100%, respectively. This immunoassay will be useful for prospective and retrospective studies assessing the distribution and prevalence of Psoroptes sp. infestations in bighorn sheep.  相似文献
