Pollen loads in the atmosphere of Darwin, a city located in the wet‐dry tropics of Australia, have been monitored for the period March 2004 to November 2005 as part of a large research program looking at atmospheric particles and human health. Seven pollen types dominate the pollen spectrum, the herbaceous families of Poaceae (grasses) and Cyperaceae (sedges), as well as several native tree and shrub taxa, Acacia, Callitris, Casuarina, Arecaceae and Myrtaceae. The pollen loads were found to have a strong seasonal component associated with the alternating wet (November to March) and dry (April to October) seasons of the region. Seventy percent of the yearly pollen load is captured during the dry season, with the peak pollen period occurring at the onset of the dry season (April–May) when most grasses are in flower. The daily pollen concentration decreases as the dry season progresses, accompanied by a change in composition; fewer herbaceous but increasing woody taxa. Preliminary health outcomes reveal a positive association between hay fever, Poaceae and Acacia pollen, as well as a significant association between total fungal spore concentrations and asthma. The Darwin record contrasts significantly with surveys conducted in the subtropical and temperate cities of Australia where temperature as opposed to rainfall and the prevalence of northern hemisphere exotic tree species have a greater influence over the seasonality and composition of the pollen loads. 相似文献

Coastal regions on the Pacific north coast of North America provide important wintering habitat for many species of sea ducks. Although winter range and habitat preferences are well described for most species, fidelity to coastal wintering sites is generally undocumented. Fidelity is an important factor necessary for understanding interactions with coastal developments and activities and corresponding management strategies. We used data from Barrow's goldeneyes (Bucephala islandica), a sea duck that winters predominantly in nearshore habitats along the Pacific north coast, to investigate inter-annual fidelity to, and intra-annual fidelity within, coastal wintering sites. Between 2006 and 2015, we marked goldeneyes on breeding, molting, and wintering sites with satellite transmitters. We retained 4,931 locations in coastal habitats from 221 goldeneyes across 4 coastal regions for our analyses. These birds demonstrated high inter-annual fidelity to coastal wintering sites; 75% of selected wintering sites were within 29 km of sites used the previous winter. Inter-annual fidelity to wintering sites was similar between sex and age classes but differed by coastal region. Goldeneyes from southcentral Alaska, USA, expressed greater inter-annual fidelity relative to birds from northern or southern British Columbia, Canada, and southeast Alaska. Goldeneyes also expressed high intra-annual fidelity within wintering sites, with 75% of individuals averaging within-season movements of ≤9 km. Intra-annual fidelity was lesser for female than male goldeneyes but did not differ between hatch-year and after-hatch-year birds. We found regional variation in intra-annual fidelity, with goldeneyes from southcentral Alaska expressing greater intra-annual fidelity compared to birds from other regions. High inter- and intra-annual winter site fidelity by Barrow's goldeneyes suggests that, at a population level, habitat use is predictable and can be used to inform risk assessment or to evaluate factors affecting habitat choice. The cell volume, cell water, intracellular ionic concentrations, and transmembrane potential of rat alveolar macrophages were determined. The measurements were made on cells which had been separated from the medium by centrifugation through dibutyl phthalate in order to greatly reduce the trapped extracellular space. The mean cell volume of the alveolar macrophages is 1,525 cubic microns and 72% of this volume is water. The intracellular fluid is high in Na+ (97 mM) and lower in K+ (50 mM) and the intracellular Cl- concentration in 64 mM. The transmembrane potential, as measured from the equilibrium distribution of tritiated triphenylmethyl phosphonium and by using the fluorescent probe, Di-S-C3(5), is approximately -37 millivolts. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a natural polyphenolic compound with many biological activities, has been shown to be protective against ischemia-reperfusion injury. We have synthesized six new catechol ring-fluorinated CAPE derivatives and evaluated their cytotoxic and cytoprotective effects against menadione-induced cytotoxicity in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. These results provide some insights into the structural basis of CAPE cytoprotection in this assay, which does not appear to be based solely on direct antioxidant properties. 相似文献

To address questions about the structure of the vacuolar ATPase, we have generated mutant strains of Neurospora crassa defective in six subunits, C, H, a, c, c', and c'. Except for strains lacking subunit c', the mutant strains were indistinguishable from each other in most phenotypic characteristics. They did not accumulate arginine in the vacuoles, grew poorly at pH 5.8 with altered morphology, and failed to grow at alkaline pH. Consistent with findings from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the data indicate that subunits C and H are essential for generation of a functional enzyme. Unlike S. cerevisiae, N. crassa has a single isoform of the a subunit. Analysis of other fungal genomes indicates that only the budding yeasts have a two-gene family for subunit a. It has been unclear whether subunit c', a small proteolipid, is a component of all V-ATPases. Our data suggest that this subunit is present in all fungi, but not in other organisms. Mutation or deletion of the N. crassa gene encoding subunit c' did not completely eliminate V-ATPase function. Unlike other V-ATPase null strains, they grew, although slowly, at alkaline pH, were able to form conidia (asexual spores), and were inhibited by concanamycin, a specific inhibitor of the V-ATPase. The phenotypic character in which strains differed was the ability to go through the sexual cycle to generate mature spores and viable mutant progeny.
