Aim Montane tropics are areas of high endemism, and mechanisms driving this endemism have been receiving increasing attention at a global scale. A general trend is that climatic factors do not explain the species richness of species with small to medium‐sized geographic ranges, suggesting that geological and evolutionary processes must be considered. On the African continent, several hypotheses including both refugial and geographic uplift models have been advanced to explain avian speciation and diversity in the lowland forest and montane regions of central and eastern Africa; montane regions in particular are recognized as hotspots of vertebrate endemism. Here, we examine the possible role of these models in driving speciation in a clade of African forest robins. Location Africa. Methods We constructed the first robustly supported molecular phylogenetic hypothesis of forest robins. On this phylogeny, we reconstructed habitat‐based distributions and geographic distributions relative to the Albertine Rift. We also estimated the timing of lineage divergences via a molecular clock. Results Robust estimates of phylogenetic relationships and clock‐based divergences reject Miocene tectonic uplift and Pleistocene forest refugia as primary drivers of speciation in forest robins. Instead, our data suggest that most forest robin speciation took place in the Late Pliocene, from 3.2 to 2.2 Ma. Distributional patterns are complex, with the Albertine Rift region serving as a general east–west break across the group. Montane distributions are inferred to have evolved four times. Main conclusions Phylogenetic divergence dates coincide with a single period of lowland forest retraction in the late Pliocene, suggesting that most montane speciation resulted from the rapid isolation of populations in montane areas, rather than montane areas themselves being drivers of speciation. This conclusion provides additional evidence that Pliocene climate change was a major driver of speciation in broadly distributed African animal lineages. We further show that lowland forest robins are no older than their montane relatives, suggesting that lowland areas are not museums which house ‘ancient’ taxa; rather, for forest robins, montane areas should be viewed as living museums of a late Pliocene diversification event. A forest refugial pattern is operating in Africa, but it is not constrained to the Pleistocene.  相似文献

The evolution of migration in birds has fascinated biologists for centuries. In this study, we performed phylogenetic-based analyses of Catharus thrushes, a model genus in the study of avian migration, and their close relatives. For these analyses, we used both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, and the resulting phylogenies were used to trace migratory traits and biogeographic patterns. Our results provide the first robust assessment of relationships within Catharus and relatives and indicate that both mitochondrial and autosomal genes contribute to overall support of the phylogeny. Measures of phylogenetic informativeness indicated that mitochondrial genes provided more signal within Catharus than did nuclear genes, whereas nuclear loci provided more signal for relationships between Catharus and close relatives than did mitochondrial genes. Insertion and deletion events also contributed important support across the phylogeny. Across all taxa included in the study, and for Catharus, possession of long-distance migration is reconstructed as the ancestral condition, and a North American (north of Mexico) ancestral area is inferred. Within Catharus, sedentary behaviour evolved after the first speciation event in the genus and is geographically and temporally correlated with Central American distributions and the final closure of the Central American Seaway. Migratory behaviour subsequently evolved twice in Catharus and is geographically and temporally correlated with a recolonization of North America in the late Pleistocene. By temporally linking speciation events with changes in migratory condition and events in Earth history, we are able to show support for several competing hypotheses relating to the geographic origin of migration.  相似文献

利用全细胞电压钳方法研究了细胞外高Mg~(2 )对豚鼠心室肌细胞I_(k,ATP)(ATP敏感钾电流)的作用。细胞的I_(k,ATP)是被代谢抑制剂2,4-二硝基酚(DNP)激活的,可被特异性阻断剂优降糖完全阻断。细胞外8mmol/L MgSO_4几乎能完全抑制DNP激活的I_(k,ATP)膜电位0mV水平时抑制率为92±8.6%;4mmol/L MgSO_4可部分抑制I_(k,ATP),抑制率为44±14.6%。Mg~(2 )与ATP联合使用对I_(k,ATP)的作用与Mg~(2 )单独作用无明显差异。结果提示,抑制I_(k,ATP)是Mg~(2 )防止缺氧或缺血状态下心肌细胞动作电位时程缩短的一个重要原因,因而可能也是Mg~(2 )抗缺血性心律失常的重要机制。  相似文献

Surface behaviour of Maculatin 1.1 and Citropin 1.1 antibiotic peptides have been studied using the Langmuir monolayer technique in order to understand the peptide-membrane interaction proposed as critical for cellular lysis. Both peptides have a spontaneous adsorption at the air-water interface, reaching surface potentials similar to those obtained by direct spreading. Collapse pressures (Πc, stability to lateral compression), molecular areas at maximal packing and surface potentials (ΔV) obtained from compression isotherms of both pure peptide monolayers are characteristic of peptides adopting mainly α-helical structure at the interface. The stability of Maculatin monolayers depended on the subphase and increased when pH was raised. In an alkaline environment, Maculatin exhibits a molecular reorganization showing a reproducible discontinuity in the Π-A compression isotherm. Both peptides in lipid films with the zwitterionic palmitoyl-oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine (POPC) showed an immiscible behaviour at all lipid-peptide proportions studied. By contrast, in films with the anionic palmitoyl-oleoyl-phosphatidylglycerol (POPG), the peptides showed miscible behaviour when the peptides represented less than 50% of total surface area. Additional penetration experiments also demonstrated that both peptides better interact with POPG compared with POPC monolayers. This lipid preference is discussed as a possible explanation of their antibiotic properties.  相似文献
