Animals, including humans, use olfaction to assess potential social and sexual partners. Although hormones modulate olfactory cues, we know little about whether contraception affects semiochemical signals and, ultimately, mate choice. We examined the effects of a common contraceptive, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), on the olfactory cues of female ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), and the behavioural response these cues generated in male conspecifics. The genital odorants of contracepted females were dramatically altered, falling well outside the range of normal female variation: MPA decreased the richness and modified the relative abundances of volatile chemicals expressed in labial secretions. Comparisons between treatment groups revealed several indicator compounds that could reliably signal female reproductive status to conspecifics. MPA also changed a female''s individual chemical ‘signature’, while minimizing her chemical distinctiveness relative to other contracepted females. Most remarkably, MPA degraded the chemical patterns that encode honest information about genetic constitution, including individual diversity (heterozygosity) and pairwise relatedness to conspecifics. Lastly, males preferentially investigated the odorants of intact over contracepted females, clearly distinguishing those with immediate reproductive potential. By altering the olfactory cues that signal fertility, individuality, genetic quality and relatedness, contraceptives may disrupt intraspecific interactions in primates, including those relevant to kin recognition and mate choice.  相似文献

The aim was to investigate if engineered endophytes that are capable of degrading organic contaminants, and deal with or ideally improve uptake and translocation of toxic metals, can improve phytoremediation of mixed organic-metal pollution. As a model system, yellow lupine was inoculated with the endophyte Burkholderia cepacia VM1468 possessing (a) the pTOM-Bu61 plasmid, coding for constitutive toluene/TCE degradation, and (b) the chromosomally inserted ncc-nre Ni resistance/sequestration system. As controls, plants were inoculated with B. vietnamiensis BU61 (pTOM-Bu61) and B. cepacia BU72 (containing the ncc-nre Ni resistance/sequestration system). Plants were exposed to mixes of toluene and Ni. Only inoculation with B. cepacia VM1468 resulted in decreased Ni and toluene phytotoxicity, as measured by a protective effect on plant growth and decreased activities of enzymes involved in antioxidative defence (catalase, guaiacol peroxidase, superoxide dismutase) in the roots. Besides, plants inoculated with B. cepacia VM1468 and B. vietnamiensis BU61 released less toluene through the leaves than non-inoculated plants and those inoculated with B. cepacia BU72. Ni-uptake in roots was slightly increased for B. cepacia BU72 inoculated plants. These results indicate that engineered endophytes have the potential to assist their host plant to deal with co-contamination of toxic metals and organic contaminants during phytoremediation.  相似文献

Uredinia and urediniospores of six Puccinia species growing on Poaceae in southwestern Saudi Arabia were morphologically compared by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Puccinia cenchri, P. fragosoana and P. isiacae were recorded for the first time in Saudi Arabia. Many differences between uredinia and urediniospores of studied Puccinia species were recorded. These differences are not related to host plant but may be due to the species of Puccinia itself. Observations by SEM led to more information in distinguishing between these Puccinia species particularly the presence of paraphyses and density and length of spines.  相似文献

Immunological molecules are implicated in inflammatory disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; Crohn disease [CD] and ulcerative colitis [UC]). Killer cell immunoglobulin‐like receptors (KIRs) are also genetically variable proteins involved in immune function. They are expressed by NK cells and certain T lymphocytes, regulate specificity and function by interaction with HLA Class I molecules, may be either inhibitory or activating and are polymorphic both in terms of alleles and haplotype gene content. Genetic associations between activating KIRs and certain autoimmune and inflammatory diseases have been reported; however, a possible association between KIR and IBD remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between KIR repertoire and IBD pathologies in a Spanish cohort. KIR variability was analyzed using PCR–sequence specific oligonucleotide probes (SSOP). Inhibitory KIR2DL5 was found more frequently in UC and IBD patient groups than in healthy controls (P = 0.028 and P = 0.01, respectively), as was activating KIR2DS1 (P = 0.02, Pc > 0.05, UC vs. Controls; P = 0.001, Pc = 0.01, IBD vs Controls; P = 0.01, Pc > 0.05, Controls vs CR), KIR2DS5 (P = 0.0028, Pc = 0.04, Controls vs UC; P = 0.0001, Pc = 0.0017, Controls vs IBD; P = 0.01, Pc > 0.05, Controls vs CD) and KIR3DS1 (P = 0.012, Pc > 0.05, Controls vs IBD). Our data suggest that imbalance between activating and inhibitory KIR may partially explain the different pathogeneses of these IBDs and that there is a hypothetical role for the telomeric B region (which contains both KIR2DS5 and KIR2DS1) in these diseases.  相似文献

Present study probes the role of peroxynitrite (ONOO-)-modified thymidine-5′-monophosphate (TMP) in SLE patients with different disease activity scores according to the SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI). Serum analysis showed significant increased number of subjects positive for anti-ONOO--TMP-protein antibodies in SLE patients with different SLEDAI scores. Interestingly, the levels of these antibodies were significantly higher among SLE patients, whose SLEDAI scores were ≥20. In addition, a significant correlation was observed between the levels of anti-ONOO--TMP-protein antibodies and the SLEDAI score (r = 0.595, p < 0.0001). In short, this study shows a positive association between anti-ONOO--TMP-protein antibodies and SLEDAI. The stronger response observed in patients with higher SLEDAI scores suggests that anti-ONOO--TMP-protein antibodies may be useful in evaluating the progression of SLE and in elucidating the mechanisms of disease pathogenesis.  相似文献

DAX1 (NR0B1), a member of the nuclear receptors super family, has been shown to be involved in the genetic sex determination and in gonadal differentiation in several vertebrate species. In the aquaculture fish European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, and in the generality of fish species, the mechanisms of sex determination and differentiation have not been elucidated. The lymphocyte glycoprotein CD4 is constitutively internalized and recycled in nonlymphoid cells, but is excluded from the endocytic pathway in lymphocytic cells (Pelchen-Matthews, A., J. E. Armes, G. Griffiths, and M. Marsh. 1991. J. Exp. Med. 173: 575-587). Inhibition of CD4 endocytosis is dependent on CD4 expressing an intact cytoplasmic domain and is only observed in cells where CD4 can interact with the protein tyrosine kinase p56lck, a member of the src gene family. We have expressed p56lck, p60c-src, or chimeras of the two proteins in CD4-transfected NIH-3T3 or HeLa cells. Immunoprecipitation of CD4 and in vitro kinase assays showed that p56lck and the lck/src chimera, which contains the NH2 terminus of p56lck, can associate with CD4. In contrast, p60c-src and the src/lck chimera, which has the NH2 terminus of p60c-src, do not associate with CD4. Endocytosis assays using radioiodinated anti-CD4 monoclonal antibodies demonstrated that coexpression of CD4 with p56lck, but not with p60c-src, inhibited CD4 endocytosis, and that the extent of the inhibition depended directly on the relative levels of CD4 and p56lck expressed. The uptake of mutant CD4 molecules which cannot interact with p56lck was not affected. Measurement of the fluid-phase endocytosis of HRP or the internalization of transferrin indicated that the effect of p56lck was specific for CD4, and did not extend to other receptor-mediated or fluid-phase endocytic processes. Immunogold labeling of CD4 at the cell surface and observation by electron microscopy demonstrated directly that p56lck inhibits CD4 endocytosis by preventing its entry into coated pits.  相似文献
