A central motif in neuronal networks is convergence, linking several input neurons to one target neuron. In visual cortex, convergence renders target neurons responsive to complex stimuli. Yet, convergence typically sends multiple stimuli to a target, and the behaviorally relevant stimulus must be selected. We used two stimuli, activating separate electrocorticographic V1 sites, and both activating an electrocorticographic V4 site equally strongly. When one of those stimuli activated one V1 site, it gamma synchronized (60-80?Hz) to V4. When the two stimuli activated two V1 sites, primarily the relevant one gamma synchronized to V4. Frequency bands of gamma activities showed substantial overlap containing the band of interareal coherence. The relevant V1 site had its gamma peak frequency 2-3?Hz higher than the irrelevant V1 site and 4-6?Hz higher than V4. Gamma-mediated interareal influences were predominantly directed from V1 to V4. We propose that selective synchronization renders relevant input effective, thereby modulating effective connectivity. 相似文献

Plants have the ability to colonize highly diverse environments. The zinc and cadmium hyperaccumulator Arabidopsis halleri has adapted to establish populations on soils covering an extreme range of metal availabilities. The A. halleri ZIP6 gene presents several hallmarks of hyperaccumulation candidate genes: it is constitutively highly expressed in roots and shoots and is associated with a zinc accumulation quantitative trait locus. Here, we show that AhZIP6 is duplicated in the A. halleri genome. The two copies are expressed mainly in the vasculature in both A. halleri and Arabidopsis thaliana, indicative of conserved cis regulation, and acquired partial organ specialization. Yeast complementation assays determined that AhZIP6 is a zinc and cadmium transporter. AhZIP6 silencing in A. halleri or expression in A. thaliana alters cadmium tolerance, but has no impact on zinc and cadmium accumulation. AhZIP6-silenced plants display reduced cadmium uptake upon short-term exposure, adding AhZIP6 to the limited number of Cd transporters supported by in planta evidence. Altogether, our data suggest that AhZIP6 is key to fine-tune metal homeostasis in specific cell types. This study additionally highlights the distinct fates of duplicated genes in A. halleri. 相似文献

We studied the expression of the human c-myc proto-oncogene in normal human colon epithelium by both in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. c-myc was found to be expressed uniformly throughout the entire thickness of the colon epithelium. The genus Dasylirion is a group of plants typically present in the Chihuahuan Desert, perennial, with a dioecious sexual behavior and commonly called sotoles. This genus has been little studied from the biological point of view, and the bases of its reproductive response remain unknown. In this work we studied the chromosome number and meiotic response of Dasylirion cedrosanum in the county of Saltillo, Coahuila, located at the North East of Mexico. For the preparation of mitotic chromosomes, we used a technique based on enzymatic treatment with pectolyase and cellulase, as well as staining with acetocarmin dye. For the study of meiosis, male flower buds were collected, fixed and stained for analysis with the same dye. As a result, the gametic (n = x = 19) and somatic chromosome (2n = 38) numbers of D. cedrosanum are reported for the first time, being consistent with previous findings in other Dasylirion species, which points to a constant ploidy level across the genus. Variation was observed in the morphology and size of the somatic chromosomes, with types ranging from submetacentric to subtelocentric, and sizes oscillating in a range of 4.43 µm, with an average total length of 112.38 µm for the diploid chromosome complement. This shows that the chromosome complement of D. cedrosanom would belong to a 3B classification of Stebins, with a medium variation between chromosome lengths and low chromosome asymmetry. This variation indicates the feasibility of constructing a chromosome ideotype for this species. The meiotic chromosome pairing showed a chromosome behavior consistent with a disomic inheritance characteristic of a diploid species, with prevalence of ring and chain bivalents, typically without pairing abnormalities. Bivalent configurations in all cases were symmetrical.The normal and symmetrical meiotic pairing indicates a balanced production of gametes, and suggests the absence of heteromorphic sex determination. 相似文献

Environments conducive to high malaria transmission and widespread poverty are at the roots of the 'malaria giant', which affects 46 countries in Africa. The recent interest in and momentum of work on malaria, in endemic countries and the international community, is unprecedented and opens new perspectives for controlling the disease. Significant steps included: (i) the allocation of US$20 million by WHO for accelerated implementation of malaria control in 34 African countries in 1997-98; (ii) the Declaration on Malaria by the Heads of States of the Organization of African Unity and the establishment of the African Initiative for Malaria Control in 1997; (iii) the concomitant mobilisation of the research community in the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria; (iv) the G8 Summit in 1998 in Birmingham asking for higher commitment to malaria control, particularly in Africa; and (v) the Roll Back Malaria initiative set as a WHO priority project in 1998. However, experiences have proved the alarming 'resilience' of the malaria system in Africa, showing devastating consequences when malaria returns to the original levels after intensive control is interrupted. Community-based control activities have been a major component of the Tigray regional malaria control programme since 1992. A team of 735 volunteer community health workers treat on average 60,000 clinical malaria cases monthly during the high malaria transmission season. Ensuring access for the rural population to early diagnosis and treatment has contributed to a significant decrease in death rate in under-five children at the village level from 1994 to 1996. Mapping and geographic information system (GIS) technologies have been introduced to support planning for control by assessment of community-based coverage. With further development, GIS will be used in stratification, and to assess the impact of water resources development on malaria transmission and intensity. 相似文献

Global trends of infant and child mortality have decreased over the last 30 years, while the proportion of malaria deaths has progressively increased due to the deteriorating situation in sub-Saharan Africa. The Global Malaria Control Strategy promoted by WHO has encountered several obstacles to its implementation. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can reduce malaria mortality, but there is still low investment on safe and effective modalities of care delivery at the periphery, where most of the malaria burden exists. Selective vector control (indoor residual spraying and insecticide-treated nets) plays a significant role outside Africa, but its wider use is limited by cost/affordability problems and operational issues (supply, delivery and logistics). Alternative methods such as environmental management and biological control are cost-effective only under very specific epidemiological situations. In most countries forecasting, early detection and containment of malaria epidemics is deficient, and there is separation between the research and control communities, particularly in Africa. Involvement of the internal agencies, strategic investments in capacity building and institutional networking are needed to strengthen capacity for malaria and research in the countries. The major responsibility is to guide the expenditure made by the communities (which far out-weigh the limited share of national health budgets) towards the most cost-effective approaches to reduce malaria mortality and morbidity. 相似文献

The expression of the catalytic subunit (hTERT) represents the limiting factor for telomerase activity. In transfection studies, high level of activity of hTERT promoter is found, whereas low copy numbers of hTERT mRNA are detected in vivo. To explain this discrepancy, a series of vectors containing the hTERT promoter and gene were transiently transfected into HeLa cells. Four important regions were identified. First, the core promoter has bidirectional activity. Second, the distal upstream region (-1821 to -811bp) involved in the splicing of the first intron and could be a key of splicing specificity. Third, the intermediate promoter region (-800 to -300bp) could play an important role in silencing the reverse promoter activity. Fourth, the structural gene (up to +1077) strongly reduced hTERT promoter activity. These results provide the first evidence that the first two exons play a major role in the down-regulation of the hTERT promoter in telomerase-positive cells. 相似文献
