In this paper we describe the present status of the large migratory catfish fisheries in the Upper Amazon. We present biological information about the main species and we give strong evidence that the stock of piraíba (Brachyplatystoma filamentosum),the largest catfish in the Amazon Basin is probably over-exploited. Aspergillus is a very ubiquitous fungal in our environment, including hospitals, being the second in frequency in colonization and infection, just after Candida spp. Aspergillus nosocomial infections have increased, because the number of immunocompromised patients has also increased. Nosocomial infections can be caused by different species of Aspergillus, being pulmonary manifestations the most frequent. Primary or secondary nonpulmonary infections can affect the brain, heart, kidney, eyes and other organs. The mortality due to invasive aspergillosis is very high, and a clinical-radiological suspicion and, specially the instauration of a rapid treatment with high doses of amphotericin B or its new formulations (associated with surgery in many times) may modify the mortality observed in this patients. 相似文献

Introduction
To investigate whether accelerated hand bone mineral density (BMD) loss is associated with progressive joint damage in hands and feet in the first year of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and whether it is an independent predictor of subsequent progressive total joint damage after 4 years.Methods
In 256 recent-onset RA patients, baseline and 1-year hand BMD was measured in metacarpals 2-4 by digital X-ray radiogrammetry. Joint damage in hands and feet were scored in random order according to the Sharp-van der Heijde method at baseline and yearly up to 4 years.Results
68% of the patients had accelerated hand BMD loss (>-0.003 g/cm2) in the first year of RA. Hand BMD loss was associated with progressive joint damage after 1 year both in hands and feet with odds ratios (OR) (95% confidence intervals [CI]) of 5.3 (1.3-20.9) and 3.1 (1.0-9.7). In univariate analysis, hand BMD loss in the first year was a predictor of subsequent progressive total joint damage after 4 years with an OR (95% CI) of 3.1 (1.3-7.6). Multivariate analysis showed that only progressive joint damage in the first year and anti-citrullinated protein antibody positivity were independent predictors of long-term progressive joint damage.Conclusions
In the first year of RA, accelerated hand BMD loss is associated with progressive joint damage in both hands and feet. Hand BMD loss in the first year of recent-onset RA predicts subsequent progressive total joint damage, however not independent of progressive joint damage in the first year. 相似文献96.

activity in three species of carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa) in relation to light intensities. X.
leucothorax is diurnal, X. tenuiscapa is largely diurnal being only occasionally crepuscular, while X.
tranquebarica is truly nocturnal. Occasional forays into dim light by X. tenuiscapa are likely to be due to the availability of richly rewarding Heterophragma

Flavodiiron proteins (FDPs) play key roles in biological response mechanisms against oxygen and/or nitric oxide; in particular they are present in oxygenic phototrophs (including cyanobacteria and gymnosperms). Two conserved domains define the core of this family of proteins: a N-terminal metallo-β-lactamase-like domain followed by a C-terminal flavodoxin-like one, containing the catalytic diiron centre and a FMN cofactor, respectively. Members of the FDP family may present extra modules in the C-terminus, and were classified into several classes according to their distribution and composition. The cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 contains four Class C FDPs (Flv1-4) that include at the C-terminus an additional NAD(P)H:flavin oxidoreductase (FlR) domain. Two of them (Flv3 and Flv4) have the canonical diiron ligands (Class C, Type 1), while the other two (Flv1 and Flv2) present different residues in that region (Class C, Type 2). Most phototrophs, either Bacterial or Eukaryal, contain at least two FDP genes, each encoding for one of those two types. Crystals of the Flv1 two core domains (Flv1-ΔFlR), without the C-terminal NAD(P)H:flavin oxidoreductase extension, were obtained and the structure was determined. Its pseudo diiron site contains non-canonical basic and neutral residues, and showed anion moieties, instead. Since the emergence of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America in 1999, there have been several reports of WNV activity in Central and South American countries. To detect WNV in Brazil, we performed a serological survey of horses from different regions of Brazil using recombinant peptides from domain III of WNV. Positive samples were validated with the neutralisation test. Our results showed that of 79 ELISA-positive horses, nine expressed WNV-specific neutralising antibodies. Eight of the infected horses were from the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and one was from the state of Paraíba. Our results provide additional evidence for the emergence of WNV in Brazil and for its circulation in multiple regions of the country. 相似文献

The goal of this study was to demonstrate the usefulness of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the serodiagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary TB (EPTB). This assay used 20 amino acid-long, non-overlapped synthetic peptides that spanned the complete Mycobacterium tuberculosis ESAT-6 and Ag85A sequences. The validation cohort consisted of 1,102 individuals who were grouped into the following five diagnostic groups: 455 patients with PTB, 60 patients with EPTB, 40 individuals with non-EPTB, 33 individuals with leprosy and 514 healthy controls. For the PTB group, two ESAT-6 peptides (12033 and 12034) had the highest sensitivity levels of 96.9% and 96.2%, respectively, and an Ag85A-peptide (29878) was the most specific (97.4%) in the PTB groups. For the EPTB group, two Ag85A peptides (11005 and 11006) were observed to have a sensitivity of 98.3% and an Ag85A-peptide (29878) was also the most specific (96.4%). When combinations of peptides were used, such as 12033 and 12034 or 11005 and 11006, 99.5% and 100% sensitivities in the PTB and EPTB groups were observed, respectively. In conclusion, for a cohort that consists entirely of individuals from Venezuela, a multi-antigen immunoassay using highly sensitive ESAT-6 and Ag85A peptides alone and in combination could be used to more rapidly diagnose PTB and EPTB infection. 相似文献
