Abstract: Two European species of the Diomedeoididae, an extinct family of procellariiform (tube‐nose) birds, have hitherto been distinguished primarily by size of their limb bones. Here, we describe an Early Oligocene (Rupelian) procellariifom coracoid that in all probability represents the larger species, Diomedeoides lipsiensis, and compare it to the coracoids of smaller diomedeoidids and extant procellariiforms. Using multivariate (Principal Component Analysis) and univariate analyses, we demonstrate that nearly all measurements are heavily size dependent, which makes the proportions and some other shape characters of little use as phylogenetic markers. Among eight measurements, the coracoid corpus width shows the highest correlation (higher than corpus depth) with body mass, permitting a precise calculation of over twofold difference in body mass between D. lipsiensis and smaller species. Among 16 qualitative characters analysed, the majority proved too variable to be used as markers of interfamily relationships and only 2–3, the ventral intermuscular line, sternocoracoid articulation (divided vs. undivided), and, with reservations, epimarginal crest vary consistently between the families. By far the most variable is the acrocoracoid process that tends to be deeper (more elongate dorsoventrally) in larger petrels but not in the albatrosses. However, the detailed shapes of the acrocoracoid heads are highly genus specific and suggest a genus‐level diversity among the Diomedeoididae from the Oligocene of Europe. The common features of the diomedeoidid coracoids are best interpreted as plesiomorphies, which accounts for some similarities to the Oceanitinae (that are probably basal among the crown‐group procellariiforms). The evidence from the coracoid is consistent with a stem‐group position of the Diomedeoididae as previously proposed by others. We emphasize the need of a group‐specific character analysis, primarily of allometries and levels of character variation, prior to a phylogenetic reconstruction.  相似文献

We examine the evolution of diseases that show the frequency‐dependent transmission process that is commonly applied to sexually and vector‐transmitted infections. As is commonly found, the basic reproductive ratio (R0) of the parasite is maximized by evolution. This has important implications, as it implies that for a wide range of circumstances diseases that show frequency‐dependent transmission may be selected to evolve towards driving their hosts to extinction. This contrasts with the results obtained in spatially explicit models where although parasite‐driven host extinction may occur, it is unlikely to evolve. We further show that an evolutionary constraint between transmission and virulence is required for evolution to lead to an endemic coexistence of both the host and the disease. Furthermore, this constraint needs to be saturating, such that transmission is ‘bought’ at an increasing cost in terms of virulence, to avoid evolution to extinction.  相似文献

Trade‐offs are fundamental to evolutionary outcomes and play a central role in eco‐evolutionary theory. They are often examined by experimentally selecting on one life‐history trait and looking for negative correlations in other traits. For example, populations of the moth Plodia interpunctella selected to resist viral infection show a life‐history cost with longer development times. However, we rarely examine whether the detection of such negative genetic correlations depends on the trait on which we select. Here, we examine a well‐characterized negative genotypic trade‐off between development time and resistance to viral infection in the moth Plodia interpunctella and test whether selection on a phenotype known to be a cost of resistance (longer development time) leads to the predicted correlated increase in resistance. If there is tight pleiotropic relationship between genes that determine development time and resistance underpinning this trade‐off, we might expect increased resistance when we select on longer development time. However, we show that selecting for longer development time in this system selects for reduced resistance when compared to selection for shorter development time. This shows how phenotypes typically characterized by a trade‐off can deviate from that trade‐off relationship, and suggests little genetic linkage between the genes governing viral resistance and those that determine response to selection on the key life‐history trait. Our results are important for both selection strategies in applied biological systems and for evolutionary modelling of host–parasite interactions.  相似文献

Hosts have evolved a diverse range of defence mechanisms in response to challenge by infectious organisms (parasites and pathogens). Whether defence is through avoidance of infection, control of the growth of the parasite once infected, clearance of the infection, tolerance to the disease caused by infection or innate and/or acquired immunity, it will have important implications for the population ecology (epidemiology) of the host-parasite interaction. As a consequence, it is important to understand the evolutionary dynamics of defence in the light of the ecological feedbacks that are intrinsic to the interaction. Here, we review the theoretical models that examine how these feedbacks influence the nature and extent of the defence that will evolve. We begin by briefly comparing different evolutionary modelling approaches and discuss in detail the modern game theoretical approach (adaptive dynamics) that allows ecological feedbacks to be taken into account. Next, we discuss a number of models of host defence in detail and, in particular, make a distinction between 'resistance' and 'tolerance'. Finally, we discuss coevolutionary models and the potential use of models that include genetic and game theoretical approaches. Our aim is to review theoretical approaches that investigate the evolution of defence and to explain how the type of defence and the costs associated with its acquisition are important in determining the level of defence that evolves.  相似文献

Background. Although the beneficial effects of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) have been demonstrated in a number of trials, most studies were conducted in Western countries. Experience, logistics and patient characteristics may differ in other parts of the world. Methods. Consecutive patients treated with primary PCI in Cinere Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia, between January 2008 and October 2008 were compared with those treated in the Isala Clinics, Zwolle, the Netherlands. Results. During the study period, a total of 596 patients were treated by primary PCI, 568 in Zwolle and 28 in Jakarta. Patients in Indonesia were younger (54 vs 63 years), more often had diabetes (36 vs. 12%) and high lipids and were more often smokers (68 vs. 31%). Time delay between symptom onset and admission was longer in Indonesia. Patients from Indonesia more often had signs of heart failure at admission. The time between admission and balloon inflation was longer in Indonesia. At angiography, patients from Indonesia more often had multivessel disease. There was no difference in the percentage of restoration of TIMI 3 flow by primary PCI between the two hospitals. Conclusion. Patients with STEMI in Indonesia have a higher risk profile compared with those in the Netherlands, according to prevalence of coronary risk factors, signs of heart failure, multivessel disease and patient delay. Understanding fluctuating selection is important for our understanding of patterns of spatial and temporal diversity in nature. Host–parasite theory has classically assumed fluctuations either occur between highly specific genotypes (matching allele: MA) or from specialism to generalism (gene‐for‐gene: GFG). However, while MA can only generate one mode of fluctuating selection, we show that GFG can in fact produce both rapid ‘within‐range’ fluctuations (among genotypes with identical levels of investment but which specialise on different subsets of the population) and slower cycling ‘between ranges’ (different levels of investment), emphasising that MA is a subset of GFG. Our findings closely match empirical observations, although sampling rates need to be high to detect these novel dynamics empirically. Within‐range cycling is an overlooked process by which fluctuating selection can occur in nature, suggesting that fluctuating selection may be a more common and important process than previously thought in generating and maintaining diversity.  相似文献

Bitterling fishes lay their eggs on the gills of living freshwater mussels and are valuable models in behavioural and evolutionary ecology. We used morphological and genetic data to resolve the taxonomic relationships of bitterling in Europe. Previous studies have suggested the European bitterling is either a single species with a wide but discontinuous geographic distribution, or a complex of species. Morphometric and meristic data identified differences between three putative species; with a clear distinction between the eastern Asian Rhodeus sericeus, western European bitterling Rhodeus amarus, and colchian bitterling, Rhodeus colchicus. Polymorphism in the mitochondrial DNA control region was predominantly due to insertion/deletion events, making phylogenetic inference difficult, but the single haplotype found in R. sericeus populations was detected at low frequency (one of 24 individuals) in R. amarus and R. colchicus populations. Eight control region haplotypes were found in R. amarus populations, which were distinct from the two haplotypes in a R. colchicus population. Cytochrome b data produced a phylogeny with strongly‐supported differentiation between a clade of two R. sericeus haplotypes and a clade of six R. amarus/colchicus haplotypes. The star‐like topology of the R. amarus/colchicus haplotypes in a minimum spanning network suggested a rapid radiation in this clade. Our results are consistent with an hypothesis of relatively ancient divergence of R. sericeus from R. amarus/colchicus and more recent and rapid differentiation between R. amarus and R. colchicus. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 337–347.  相似文献

Lateral segregation in biological membranes leads to the formation of domains. We have studied the lateral segregation in gel-state model membranes consisting of supported dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers with various model peptides, using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The model peptides are derivatives of the Ac-GWWL(AL)(n)WWA-Etn peptides (the so-called WALP peptides) and have instead of tryptophans, other flanking residues. In a previous study, we found that WALP peptides induce the formation of extremely ordered, striated domains in supported DPPC bilayers. In this study, we show that WALP analogues with other uncharged residues (tyrosine, phenylalanine, or histidine at pH 9) can also induce the formation of striated domains, albeit in some cases with a slightly different pattern. The WALP analogues with positively charged residues (lysine or histidine at low pH) cannot induce striated domains and give rise to a completely different morphology: they induce irregularly shaped depressions in DPPC bilayers. The latter morphology is explained by the fact that the positively charged peptides repel each other and hence are not able to form striated domains in which they would have to be in close vicinity. They would reside in disordered, fluidlike lipid areas, appearing below the level of the ordered gel-state lipid domains, which would account for the irregularly shaped depressions.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the extent to which different aromatic and positively charged side chains, which often flank transmembrane segments of proteins, can influence lipid-peptide interactions. Model systems consisting of phosphatidylcholine and hydrophobic alpha-helical peptides with different flanking residues were investigated. The peptides were incorporated in relatively thick and in relatively thin lipid bilayers to create a peptide-bilayer hydrophobic mismatch, and the compensating effects on lipid structure were analyzed. When relatively long with respect to the thickness of the bilayer, the peptides that are flanked by the aromatic side chains, Trp, Tyr, and Phe, all induce a significant ordering of the lipid acyl chains, while the peptides flanked by the charged residues Lys, Arg, and His do not. However, when the peptides are relatively short with respect to the thickness of the bilayer, their effect on lipid organization does not depend primarily on their aromatic or charged character. Peptides flanked by Trp, Tyr, Lys, or (at low pH) His residues are effective in inducing mismatch-relieving cubic and inverted hexagonal phases, while analogues flanked by Phe, Arg, or (at neutral pH) His residues cannot induce an inverted hexagonal phase. The different responses to mismatch might reflect the different interfacial affinities of the residues that were investigated.  相似文献
