Culture of guinea pig and rabbit respiratory tracts for bacteria using X- (haemin) and V- (NAD) factor in agar media detected infection by V-factor dependent Pasteurellaceae (Haemophilus sp.) in three colonies of guinea pigs and a group of rabbits. The 12 Haemophilus strains comprised three API NH codes classed as Haemophilus parainfluenzae and two codes classed as Haemophilus aphrophilus/paraphrophilus. Six cell wall lipid profiles were detected, but these were not related to API NH codes. Both bacteriological properties were used to select strains for serological studies but any relationship between bacteriological and serological properties of the Haemophilus strains was not evident. Varying serological relationships occurred between the newly isolated Haemophilus strains, [Pasteurella] pneumotropica NCTC 8284 and Haemophilus strains previously isolated from rats.  相似文献

The auxin-inducible homeobox gene Oshox1 of rice (Oryza sativa) is a positive regulator of procambial cell fate commitment, and its overexpression reduces the sensitivity of polar auxin transport (PAT) to the PAT inhibitor 1-N-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA). Here, we show that wild-type rice leaves formed under conditions of PAT inhibition display vein hypertrophy, reduced distance between longitudinal veins, and increased distance between transverse veins, providing experimental evidence for a role of PAT in vascular patterning in a monocot species. Furthermore, we show that Oshox1 overexpression confers insensitivity to these PAT inhibitor-induced vascular-patterning defects. Finally, we show that in the absence of any overt phenotypical change, Oshox1 overexpression specifically reduces the affinity of the NPA-binding protein toward NPA and enhances PAT and its sensitivity toward auxin. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that Oshox1 promotes fate commitment of procambial cells by increasing their auxin conductivity properties and stabilizing this state against modulations of PAT by an endogenous NPA-like molecule.  相似文献

Bacteria and archaea occupy a considerable diversity of niches that vary with respect to the physical conditions. Survival and colonisation requires the capacity to sense, and adapt to, environmental change. In this short review we consider the issues of adaptation to acidic conditions, in particular the mechanisms that might be employed by different bacteria to respond to the specific challenges of their niche. We lay particular emphasis on the protection of the cytoplasm during alterations of the cytoplasmic pH and, in the Gram negative bacteria, on recent work that suggests that protection of the periplasm is critical for survival of exposure to extreme acid. Finally, we discuss potential mechanisms by which pH might be sensed and consider the insights gained from proteins that sense and respond specifically to changes in pH. We have described the modulation of four auxin-regulated genes during the growth cycle of suspension-cultured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum [L.] var White Burley) cells. The genes were transiently expressed 2 to 8 h after transfer of stationary phase cells to fresh medium, during the transition from the quiescent phase of cells leaving the mitotic cycle to the synthesis phase of the cell cycle. After this transient induction, the cells showed a decreased sensitivity to auxin. Although the expression pattern suggests that induction of these genes might be important for cell division, over-production of antisense mRNA for one of these genes (pCNT103) did not influence cell division in transgenic tobacco cells. Furthermore, stimuli such as salicylic acid were capable of inducing gene expression but were unable to restore cell division. Although these data do not conclusively exclude a role for these genes in cell division, their significance in this process is discussed in view of their homology with other auxin-induced genes and in view of the specificity of hormone-induced early responses.  相似文献

The involvement of the mouse mammary tumor virus (MTV) in spontaneous and hormone-induced mammary tumors in low-mammary-tumor mouse strains was studied by comparing the amounts of MTV RNA and MTV DNA sequences in mammary tumors and other tissues of mice with an without hormonal treatments. The following results were obtained. (i) Mammary tumors which appeared in C3H mice as a result of an infection with MTV contained more MTV DNA compared with noninfected organs; these mammary tumors also contained more MTV RNA than was present in lactating mammary gland cells. (ii) Hormonal stimulation by administration of excessive amounts of prolactin via hypophyseal isografts in C3Hf and O20 mice resulted in an increased expression of MTV RNA in the mammary glands. This elevated level of MTV RNA expression was, however, not maintained in the hormone-induced mammary tumors. (iii) Spontaneous mammary tumors in BALB/c mice contained similar levels of MTV DNA and MTV RNA sequences as were found in other cells of these animals.  相似文献

This paper describes the effects of nitrgen supply on the partitioning of biomass and nitrogen of Agrostis vinealis (L.) Schreber and Corynephorus canescens (L.) Beauv., two perennial grasses of dry, nutrient-poor inland dunes, and their consequences for growth and gas exchange. At a given plant nitrogen concentration (PNC) the two species allocate the same relative amount of dry matter and nitrogen to their leaves. However, A. vinealis allocates more dry matter and nitrogen to its roots and less to its above-ground support tissue than C. canescens . Both the leaf weight ratio and leaf nitrogen ratio increase with increasing PNC. Despite species-specific differences in growth form and leaf morphology, the leaf area ratio and specific leaf area of the two species are similar, both at high and low PNC. At intermediate nitrogen supply, and thus intemediate PNC, however, A. vinealis has a higher leaf area ratio and specific leaf area than C. canescens .
The two species exhibit a similar positive relationship when either the rate of net photosynthesis or the rate of shoot respiration are compared to the leaf nitrogen concentration, all expressed per unit leaf weight. The rate of net photosynthesis per unit Jeafnitrogen (PNUE) of the two species increases with decreasing leaf nitrogen concentration per unit leaf weight. C. canescens has a higher PNUE at low, and a lower PNUE at high leaf nitrogen concentration per unit leaf weight than A. vinealis . At non-limiting nitrogen supply, A. vinealis has a higher nitrogen productivity and net assimilation rate and a similar PNC and leaf area ratio as compared to C. canescens , which explains the higher relative growth rate (RGRmax) of A. vinealis. At growth-limiting nitrogen supply C. canescens achieves a similar relative growth rate at a lower PNC than A. vinealis.  相似文献

We have studied the effects of iontophoretic injection of the quaternary ammonium compounds tetraethylammonium (TEA) and tetrabutylammonium (TBA) in cardiac purkinje fibers. We find that TBA(+) is a more effective blocker than TEA(+), but injection of either compound reduces the time-dependent outward plateau currents, transient outward current (I(to)), and the delayed rectifier (I(x)). Our findings provide evidence that these outward cardiac currents are carried by channels that in some respects are pharmacologically similar to squid axon potassium channels. We demonstrate that this procedure is a new tool that can be useful in the analysis of membrane currents in the heart.  相似文献

Eight synthetic isomers of hydroxy-6-S-cysteinylglycine -7,9,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid were compared with authentic guinea pig SRS-A using UV spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography and soybean lipoxygenase. It was found that only the 5S, 6R 7, 9trans 11,14cis isomer was similar to SRS-A in all respects. The 5S, 6R 7trans, 9,11,14 cis isomer shows similar UV and HPLC characteristics but differs in that it spontaneously undergoes a 1,7 hydride shift reaction and unexpectedly does not react with soybean lipoxygenase.  相似文献
