The noctuid moth Spodoptera frugiperda consists of two strains associated with different larval host plants (most notably corn and rice). These strains exhibit differential temporal patterns of female calling and copulation during scotophase, with the corn strain more active earlier in the night. We investigated strain‐specific constraints in reproductive timing, mating interactions between the two strains, and the mode of inheritance of timing of female calling, male calling, copulation and oviposition. We observed an allochronic shift of all reproductive behaviours by approximately 3 h and a parallel shift of nonreproductive locomotor activity, suggesting involvement of the circadian clock. The corn strain was more variable in the timing of calling and copulation than the rice strain. Rice strain females were more restricted in the timing of copulation than rice strain males, while such differences between the sexes were not apparent in the corn strain. There were significant interactions between the strains affecting onset times of copulation and male calling. The four investigated reproductive traits differed in their modes of inheritance: timing of female and male calling exhibited strong maternal effects, timing of copulation was controlled by a combination of maternal effects and corn strain dominant autosomal factors, and timing of oviposition was inherited in a corn strain dominant fashion. We conclude that the allochronic separation of reproduction between fall armyworm strains is asymmetric, less pronounced than previously thought, and under complex genetic control.  相似文献

Cellular behavior along the anteroposterior axis of the regenerating axolotl forelimb was studied by use of triploid (3N) tissue grafted into diploid (2N) hosts and three-dimensional computer reconstructions. Asymmetrical upper forelimbs were surgically constructed with one half (anterior or posterior) 3N and the other half 2N. Limbs were amputated immediately after grafting or were permitted to heal for 5 or 30 days prior to amputation. When regenerates had attained the stage of digital outgrowth, the limbs were harvested and sectioned in the transverse axis for histological analysis. When all limbs bearing anterior grafts were considered as a group, 77% of the 3N mesodermal cells were observed in the anterior side of the regenerates and 23% were located in the posterior side of the regenerates. When all limbs bearing posterior grafts were considered as a group, 76% of the 3N mesodermal cells were found in the posterior side of the regenerate and 24% had crossed into the anterior side. Healing times of 0, 5, or 30 days prior to amputation had no effect on the experimental outcome. Three-dimensional computer reconstructions revealed that most 3N cells of mesodermal origin underwent short-distance migration from anterior to posterior or from posterior to anterior and intermixed with diploid mesodermal cells near the midpoint of the regenerated anteroposterior axis. Some 3N cells were observed at greater distances from the graft-host interface. By contrast, labeled epidermal cells from both anterior and posterior grafts exhibited long-distance migration across all surfaces of regenerated limbs. Details of a computer-assisted reconstructive method for studying the three-dimensional distribution of labeled cells in tissues are presented.  相似文献

A stratigraphically oriented series of the Miocene foraminiferal speciesBrizalina mandoroveensis from Ikang, Cameroon, was analyzed both by conventional multivariate morphometric procedures and by the tensor biometric method of Bookstein (1986;Statist. Sci. 1, 181–142), a method which analyzes sets of landmark points rather than specific variables of shape or size. The conventional analysis used five size-measures upon 170 specimens from five stratigraphic levels; the tensor analysis encompassed six landmarks (12 coordinates) upon 50 specimens. Whereas certain features appeared in both analyses, such as the separation between levels one and five, the techniques did not always agree with respect to the interpretation of those findings or about most details in the sequence of mean phenotypes. The canonical variate analysis bases its ordination upon a general size factor (the meaning of which is obscured by the foreshortening of within-group variation which is built into the technique). The tensor analysis locates a similar ordination using mainly features of shape.  相似文献

Two secreted alkaline phosphatase proteins were purified from cultures of Bacillus subtilis JH646MS. The two proteins showed slight differences in subunit molecular weight, substrate specificity, and charge characteristics. A total of 62% of the first 22 amino-terminal amino acids were identical. Both sequences showed conservation of structural features identified in Escherichia coli and human alkaline phosphatases. One alkaline phosphatase was a monomer and the other was a dimer. Southern analysis of genomic DNA with degenerative oligomers based on the amino acid sequences suggest that there are two structural genes for alkaline phosphatase in the genome of B. subtilis.  相似文献
