The effect of various levels of nitrogen (0.0, 30.0, 60.0, 120.0) and phosphorus (0.0, 6.5, 13.0, 36.0) on the incidence and severity of downy mildew of pearl millet and yield of two pearl millet varieties (Zango and GB8375) were studied under field conditions in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Both nitrogen and phosphorus significantly increased incidence and severity of the disease in the two varieties. Grain yield and 1000 grain weight of the varieties also increased with nitrogen and phosphorus levels.  相似文献

Background  

Candida parapsilosis is known to show limited genetic variability, despite different karyotypes and phenotypes have been described. To further investigate this aspect, a collection of 62 sensu strictu C. parapsilosis independent isolates from 4 geographic regions (Italy, n = 19; New Zealand, n = 15; Argentina, n = 14; and Hungary, n = 14) and different body sites (superficial and deep seated) were analysed for their genetic and phenotypic traits. Amplification fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was used to confirm species identification and to evaluate intraspecific genetic variability. Phenotypic characterisation included clinically relevant traits, such as drug susceptibility, in vitro biofilm formation and aspartyl protease secretion.  相似文献

1. The aphid Aphis fabae (Scopoli) is facultatively tended by Lasius niger (Linnaeus) ants. Previously, we found that A. fabae colonies can be made up of several clones, and that clones display significant differences in the composition of their honeydew sugars, especially in the amount of the ant attractant sugar melezitose that they produce. 2. These clonal differences could greatly impact the strength of the mutualistic interaction with ants as well as the aphids' fitness. 3. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare the fitness of different A. fabae clones that differed in their melezitose secretion, and whether or not they were tended by ants. 4. Individual fitness indices, colony growth, and alate production of single‐clone aphid colonies were analysed. 5. The results demonstrate that the fitness consequences of ant attendance critically depend on an interaction between levels of melezitose production. In particular, we show that high‐melezitose secreting clones produce fewer alates and hence might have a lower dispersal ability in the presence of ants. 6. Furthermore, these data confirm previous evidence that ant attendance is costly and results in the production of fewer apterae.  相似文献

Fungal strains belonging to the genera Fusarium Paecilomyces and Trichoderma were tested in vitro in order to study their effects against Schizaphis graminum one of the major pests of cereal crops around the world. Biological assays were performed using a solid formulation that was obtained from fungal cultures grown on rice and then finely ground (0.2 mm). The occurrence of toxic secondary metabolites (fumonisin B1 and beauvericin) produced by these fungi was also investigated. In each experiment, three groups of aphids: 15-hour old larvae, 5-day old nymphs with wing buds and wingless morphs were treated with a suspension of a fungal formulation. Some strains belonging to the genera Fusarium and Trichoderma significantly controlled the specimens of the three groups of S. graminum. The F. proliferatum strain ITEM 1407, producing a high level of fumonisin B1 in the culture (1250 g/g), and F. larvarum strain ITEM 2139 had high insecticidal activity (>60%) within 10 minutes after application. As F. larvarum ITEM 2139 did not produce metabolites toxic to mammals, it might be a good candidate as a biocontrol agent of S. graminum in the field.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Background  

Metabolically versatile soil bacteria Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) have emerged as opportunistic pathogens, especially of cystic fibrosis (CF). Previously, we initiated the characterization of the phenylacetic acid (PA) degradation pathway in B. cenocepacia, a member of the Bcc, and demonstrated the necessity of a functional PA catabolic pathway for full virulence in Caenorhabditis elegans. A 12 month period survey of the fungi associated with Euphorbia inarticulata was evaluated. Sampling was concentrated mainly in Aseer region (South-West Saudi Arabia) and seven fungal species were identified as pathogens of this plant. Melampsora euphorbiae and Alternaria euphorbiicola were the most common species on this plant. Bipolaris euphorbiae, Botrytis ricini, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Oidium sp., Sphaceloma poinsettiase and Uromyces euphorbiae were less frequent species. These fungal pathogens were recorded for the first time on Euphorbia inarticulata in Saudi Arabia. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed the colonization of M. euphorbiae, as an example, in leaf tissues of E. inarticulata. Remarkable ultrastructural changes in chloroplasts and nuclei of infected cells of E. inarticulata as a result of infection by M. euphorbiae were observed.  相似文献

Mouse t haplotypes are variant forms of chromosome 17 that exist at high frequencies in worldwide populations of two species of commensal mice. To determine both the relationship of t haplotypes to each other and the species within which they exist, 35 representative t haplotypes were analyzed by means of 10 independent molecular probes, including five DNA clones and five polypeptide spots identified by means of two- dimensional gel electrophoresis. All of the tested haplotypes were found to share restriction fragments and polypeptide spots that are absent in mice carrying wild-type forms of chromosome 17. This observation provides the first direct evidence that all of the known t haplotypes are descendents of a single ancestral chromosome. The absence of variation among t haplotypes could mean that this ancestral chromosome existed relatively recently, in which case it would be necessary to postulate introgressions of t haplotypes across species lines to explain their presence in both Mus domesticus and M. musculus. Alternatively, it is possible that the ancestral chromosome existed prior to the split between M. domesticus and M. musculus and that, by chance, our probes fail to detect polymorphisms that exist among the t haplotypes. A further result of our analysis is the characterization of a partial t haplotype in a wild population of Israeli mice.   相似文献

Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels is an endemic Moroccan species belonging to Sapotaceae family. In this work, lipophilic and aqueous extracts were obtained from leaves and subjected to a chemical profiling by MS and LC-MS/MS. Pentacyclic terpenoids were identified and quantified in the lipophilic fraction, while phenolic compounds (mainly belonging to flavonols and flavan-3-ols) were identified in the aqueous fraction. The antibacterial activities of fractions were evaluated in vitro against both reference Gram-positive and -negative bacterial strains and clinical isolates of methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA and MRSA); in addition, the compounds quantified as main components in each extract were assayed against reference strains. A relevant antibacterial activity was observed against reference MSSA and MRSA strains of S. aureus: for the lipophilic fraction, MIC50 values obtained were 177.8 and 170.6 μg/mL for the former and the latter, respectively, while for the aqueous fraction were 215.5 and 233.3 μg/mL. These inhibitory activities could be mainly ascribed to ursolic and oleanolic acids, among pentacyclic terpenoids, and to quercetin concerning phenolic compounds. A remarkable antibacterial activity was also observed against clinical isolates, thus argan leaves can be considered of interest in the chemotherapy of human infections.  相似文献

Background

Elucidating the process of speciation requires an in-depth understanding of the evolutionary history of the species in question. Studies that rely upon a limited number of genetic loci do not always reveal actual evolutionary history, and often confuse inferences related to phylogeny and speciation. Whole-genome data, however, can overcome this issue by providing a nearly unbiased window into the patterns and processes of speciation. In order to reveal the complexity of the speciation process, we sequenced and analyzed the genomes of 10 wild pigs, representing morphologically or geographically well-defined species and subspecies of the genus Sus from insular and mainland Southeast Asia, and one African common warthog.

Results

Our data highlight the importance of past cyclical climatic fluctuations in facilitating the dispersal and isolation of populations, thus leading to the diversification of suids in one of the most species-rich regions of the world. Moreover, admixture analyses revealed extensive, intra- and inter-specific gene-flow that explains previous conflicting results obtained from a limited number of loci. We show that these multiple episodes of gene-flow resulted from both natural and human-mediated dispersal.

Conclusions

Our results demonstrate the importance of past climatic fluctuations and human mediated translocations in driving and complicating the process of speciation in island Southeast Asia. This case study demonstrates that genomics is a powerful tool to decipher the evolutionary history of a genus, and reveals the complexity of the process of speciation.  相似文献

Linking variation in quantitative traits to variation in the genome is an important, butchallenging task in the study of life-history evolution. Linkage maps provide a valuabletool for the unravelling of such trait−gene associations. Moreover, they giveinsight into recombination landscapes and between-species karyotype evolution. Here weused genotype data, generated from a 10k single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip, ofover 2000 individuals to produce high-density linkage maps of the great tit (Parusmajor), a passerine bird that serves as a model species for ecological andevolutionary questions. We created independent maps from two distinct populations: acaptive F2-cross from The Netherlands (NL) and a wild population from the United Kingdom(UK). The two maps contained 6554 SNPs in 32 linkage groups, spanning 2010 cM and1917 cM for the NL and UK populations, respectively, and were similar in size andmarker order. Subtle levels of heterochiasmy within and between chromosomes wereremarkably consistent between the populations, suggesting that the local departures fromsex-equal recombination rates have evolved. This key and surprising result would have beenimpossible to detect if only one population was mapped. A comparison with zebra finchTaeniopygia guttata, chicken Gallus gallus and the green anole lizardAnolis carolinensis genomes provided further insight into the evolution ofavian karyotypes.  相似文献
