Oxpeckers (Buphagus sp.) are two bird species closely associated to large mammals, including giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis). We tested whether oxpeckers distributed themselves at random across individuals or aggregated on individual giraffes, and whether birds select the host's body parts with the expected greatest amount of ticks. By counting oxpeckers on giraffe's body from photographs, we quantified the distribution of birds per hosts and over predefined zones on the giraffe body. Oxpeckers displayed a strong aggregation behaviour with few hosts carrying many birds while many carried a limited number or no bird, a pattern that was most exaggerated for males. Oxpeckers were disproportionately found on the mane and back, where the density of ticks is presumably the highest. This high aggregation level of birds is typical of parasitic species and could suggest that oxpecker distribution may mirror the distribution of ticks, their primary food resource, on giraffes. Abundance of ticks appears as a major driver of the oxpecker foraging behaviour, and the oxpecker–large herbivores system proves to be highly relevant for the study of host–parasite dynamics.  相似文献

The nucleosome, the fundamental structural unit of chromatin, contains an octamer of core histones H3, H4, H2A, and H2B. Incorporation of histone variants alters the functional properties of chromatin. To understand the global dynamics of chromatin structure and function, analysis of histone variants incorporated into the nucleosome and their covalent modifications is required. Here we report the first global mass spectrometric analysis of histone H2A and H2B variants derived from Jurkat cells. A combination of mass spectrometric techniques, HPLC separations, and enzymatic digestions using endoproteinase Glu-C, endoproteinase Arg-C, and trypsin were used to identify histone H2A and H2B subtypes and their modifications. We identified nine histone H2A and 11 histone H2B subtypes, among them proteins that only had been postulated at the gene level. The two main H2A variants, H2AO and H2AC, as well as H2AL were either acetylated at Lys-5 or phosphorylated at Ser-1. For the replacement histone H2AZ, acetylation at Lys-4 and Lys-7 was found. The main histone H2B variant, H2BA, was acetylated at Lys-12, -15, and -20. The analysis of core histone subtypes with their modifications provides a first step toward an understanding of the functional significance of the diversity of histone structures.  相似文献

Electric field pulses induce permeabilization and associated fusogenicity in cell membranes. Electrofusion of cells is usually performed in two steps: the first is the creation of close intercellular contacts; the second is an application of electric pulses that induces membrane fusion. Very large cell contacts can be obtained by a filter aspiration method. A cell monolayer is created by controlled suction on biocompatible filter. No spontaneous fusion results. Just after filtration, electrofusion is obtained by field pulses applied parallel to the filter. Cell viability is not strongly affected and cells recover their spherical shape in the minute time range after filtration. The electrical parameters, the cell density, and the flow rate control fusion. Fusion is obtained with cells of different origins with very different adhesion properties. Hybrid cells are easily formed. This approach appears to be a very efficient method for cell hybridization with an easy-to-use protocol.  相似文献

The positive allometry between antlers and shoulder height reported for cervids has previously been interpreted as resulting from a high male‐male competition in large species that form large breeding groups. We aim at revisiting relative antler size variation among deer species by including more species (n = 31) and by testing both direct and indirect influences of different sexual selection proxies on the relative antler length using path analysis. The absence of direct effect of mating tactic on relative antler allometry indicates that the strength of fights does not differ among mating tactics. On the other hand, the main effect of breeding group size is revealed by polygyny. Highly polygynous species have relatively longer antlers than less polygynous ones but the difference in the relative effect of breeding group size on relative antler length is weak. Strong direct effect of breeding group size and indirect effect of mating tactic shaped the observed variation in the relative antler size among deer, suggesting that the amount of male‐male competition is the main evolutionary force of antler allometry in cervids.  相似文献

Large herbivore populations respond strongly to remotely sensed measures of primary productivity. Whereas most studies in seasonal environments have focused on the effects of spring plant phenology on juvenile survival, recent studies demonstrated that autumn nutrition also plays a crucial role. We tested for both direct and indirect (through body mass) effects of spring and autumn phenology on winter survival of 2315 mule deer fawns across a wide range of environmental conditions in Idaho, USA. We first performed a functional analysis that identified spring and autumn as the key periods for structuring the among-population and among-year variation of primary production (approximated from 1 km Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)) along the growing season. A path analysis showed that early winter precipitation and direct and indirect effects of spring and autumn NDVI functional components accounted for 45% of observed variation in overwinter survival. The effect size of autumn phenology on body mass was about twice that of spring phenology, while direct effects of phenology on survival were similar between spring and autumn. We demonstrate that the effects of plant phenology vary across ecosystems, and that in semi-arid systems, autumn may be more important than spring for overwinter survival.  相似文献

Wildlife–vehicle collisions are of increasing concern with regards to the continuous and accelerating anthropogenic development. Preventing and mitigating collisions with wildlife will require a better understanding of the environmental and biological drivers of collision risks. Because species of large mammals differ in terms of food requirements, habitat selection and movement behaviors we tested, at the management unit level, if the density of collisions with red deer, roe deer and wild boar differed in terms of spatial distribution and explanatory factors. From 20,275 documented collisions in France between years 1990 and 2006, we found marked differences in the most influential environmental factors accounting for the density of collisions among the three large herbivore species. The effect of road density was higher for the red deer than for the two other species and did not level off at our spatial-scale of observation. As expected, the annual hunting harvest—interpreted as a proxy of population abundance—was positively associated with the density of collisions for all species, being the strongest for red deer. While the collision density decreased with the proportion of forest in a management unit for wild boar, it increased with the fragmentation of forest for red deer that commute among forest patches between day and night. To reduce the number of wildlife–vehicle collisions, our results suggest to generalize road fencing and/or a control of abundance of large herbivore populations. Mitigation measures should target units where the collision risk is the highest for the most problematic species.  相似文献
