Human activities have affected the surrounding natural ecosystems, including belowground microorganisms, for millennia. Their short- and medium-term effects on the diversity and the composition of soil microbial communities are well-documented, but their lasting effects remain unknown. When unoccupied for centuries, archaeological sites are appropriate for studying the long-term effects of past human occupancy on natural ecosystems, including the soil compartment. In this work, the soil chemical and bacterial compositions were compared between the Roman fort of Hegra (Saudi Arabia) abandoned for 1500 years, and a preserved area located at 120 m of the southern wall of the Roman fort where no human occupancy was detected. We show that the four centuries of human occupancy have deeply and lastingly modified both the soil chemical and bacterial compositions inside the Roman fort. We also highlight different bacterial putative functions between the two areas, notably associated with human occupancy. Finally, this work shows that the use of soils from archaeological sites causes little disruption and can bring relevant information, at a large scale, during the initial surveys of archaeological sites.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Trade-offs play a key role in species evolution and should be found in host–parasitoid interactions where the host quality may differ between host age categories.
2. The braconid wasp, Aphidius ervi , is a solitary endoparasitoid that allows its aphid hosts to continue to feed and grow after parasitisation. The hypotheses that host age influences their quality and that female parasitoids exploit their hosts based on that quality were tested under laboratory conditions using no-choice tests.
3.  Aphidius ervi females accepted the aphid Myzus persicae for oviposition and their progeny developed successfully in all host ages. The fitness-related traits of parasitoids did not increase linearly with the host age in which they developed. Host quality was found to be optimal at intermediate host ages and the females preferred to parasitise these hosts. The shortest progeny development time and a more female-biased sex ratio were observed in hosts of intermediate age.
4. This study suggests the existence of multiple interactive trade-offs occurring during host–parasitoid interactions according to host age related quality.  相似文献

Highly polymorphic microsatellite markers can supply demographic information on founder events and range expansion following initial introduction of invasive insect species. Six microsatellite loci were isolated from a partial DNA library in order to study the invasion patterns of a seed chalcid, Megastigmus spermotrophus, introduced to Europe and New Zealand. Allelic diversity at all described loci was high, ranging from 17 to 30 alleles per locus. All six loci were successfully amplified in 15 congeneric species.  相似文献

The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate the effect of early human contact and of the separation method from the dam on the future relationships of calves with humans, and to investigate the relationship between dam responses and calf responses. Thirty-three Salers calves aged 2–4 days old and reared outdoors were split into 3-week treatments balanced according to sex and birth dates. Group 1 (long separation from the dam and human contact: LS + H; n = 11) underwent 8 h of separation from the dam per day and 5 min of individual stroking; group 2 (short separation from the dam and human contact: SS + H; n = 11) underwent 1 h of separation and the same amount of human contact as LS + H calves. Group 3 (short separation from the dam and no human contact: SS − H; n = 11) was a control group undergoing the same duration of separation as SS + H but without stroking. At 3, 15 and 45 weeks of age, the calves were tested in a standard arena test (AT) where they were successively left alone (2 min), left with a stationary human (5 min), and left with a human approaching and touching them (2 min). At 15 and 45 weeks, the calves were also tested with the standard docility test (DT: test of restraint). The dams were also tested with DT 2 months before calving. Data analysis via Mann–Whitney tests and Spearman's correlations showed no significant effect of the duration calves were separated from their dams. Just after treatment at 3-week of age, calves given stroking (LS + H and SS + H) were more motionless and more willing to accept human contact (AT: touching) than control calves (SS − H, P < 0.01). At 45 weeks of age, calves given stroking spent also significantly more time (P < 0.05) motionless with the approaching human compared to non-stroked calves (SS − H), suggesting a persistent effect. However, this effect was not reproduced on the other behavioural criteria recorded (e.g., duration of human contact or docility score). In the different tests and at the different ages, the docility scores of the dams were significantly correlated (up to 0.7, P < 0.01) with behaviour towards humans shown by stroked calves but not non-stroked calves (SS − H). Our results suggest that additional human contact at early age, but not duration of the separation from the dam, could be beneficial for the human–animal relationship, but only for calves born to docile dams.  相似文献

Optimal diet theory often fails to predict a forager’s diet choice when prey are mobile. Because they escape or defend themselves, mobile prey are likely to increase the forager’s handling time, thereby decreasing its fitness gain rate. Many animals have been shown to select their prey so as to maximize either their fitness gain or their fitness gain rate. However, no study has yet compared directly these two measures of profitability by generating testable predictions about the choice of the forager. Under laboratory conditions, we compared these two measures of profitability, using the aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemani and its host, Myzus persicae. Fitness gain was calculated for parasitoids developing in each host instar by measuring life-history traits such as developmental time, sex ratio and fecundity. Fitness gain rate was estimated by dividing fitness gain by handling time, the time required to subdue the host. Fourth instar aphids provided the best fitness gain to parasitoids, whereas second instar aphids were the most profitable in terms of fitness gain rate. Host choice tests showed that A. colemani females preferred second instar hosts, suggesting that their decision maximizes fitness gain rate over fitness gain. Our results indicate that fitness gain rate is a reliable predictor of animal’s choice for foragers exploiting resources that impose additional time cost due to their mobility. Urban habitats harbour considerable biological diversity. Ecologists have developed methods to select which habitats should be conserved. The Ecological value, a method based on vegetation, has been created for the urban habitats of Montreal (Quebec, Canada). The main objective of our study was to determine if this method was relevant to assess carabid diversity of Mount Royal Park. This index is calculated using five criteria: uniqueness, representativeness, degree of succession, richness and rarity of the flora, each of which can influence communities of insects. Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were selected because of their success as biological indicators. Despite sampling difficulties, our results demonstrate clearly that the Ecological value method does not represent the high carabid richness of urban open habitats (tall grasses) and their specialised native carabid species. Within forests we found nonetheless that the ecological value index has a significant positive relationship with native carabid abundance. Moreover, maturity and structure of urban forests were positively correlated with carabid abundance and richness. Some urban vegetation characteristics have been shown to influence entomological diversity, but the relevance of using a global floral index to encompass the carabid community seems limited.  相似文献
