A Novel,Highly Viscous Polysaccharide Excreted by an <Emphasis Type="Italic">Alteromonas</Emphasis> Isolated from a Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Shrimp

A deep-sea, mesophilic, aerobic, and heterotrophic microorganism, able to produce an extracellular polysaccharide, was isolated from a shrimp collected near an active hydrothermal vent of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses and DNA/DNA relatedness, this strain could be assigned to the species Alteromonas macleodii as a variant of the fijiensis subspecies. It was selected for its ability to exhibit a swarming mucoid phenotype on specific media. The bacterium secreted, under laboratory conditions, an extremely viscous exopolysaccharide consisting of glucose, galactose as neutral sugars, and glucuronic, galacturonic acids as uronic acids, along with pyruvate and acetate as main substituents. Identified taste bud cell proliferation in the perihatching chick [published erratum appears in Chem Senses 1998 Aug;23(4):459]

Developing taste buds in the anterior mandibular floor of perihatching chicks were studied by high voltage electron microscopic autoradiography in order to identify proliferating gemmal cell types. Montaged profiles of 29 taste buds in five cases euthanized between embryonic day 21 and posthatching day 2 were analyzed after a single [3H]thymidine injection administered on embryonic day 16, 17 or 18. Results showed that dark cells comprised 55% of identified (n = 900 cells) and 62% of labeled (n = 568 cells) gemmal cells as compared with light, intermediate, basal or perigemmal bud cells. Dark cells had both a greater (P < 0.05) number of labeled cells and a greater amount of label (grains/nucleus) than the other four bud cell types, irrespective of injection day. The nuclear area (micron 2) of dark cells was not significantly larger (P > 0.05) than that of the other gemmal cell types and therefore cannot account for the greater amount for label in the dark cells. Interestingly, only dark cells showed a positive correlation (P < 0.003) between amount of label and nuclear area. Results suggest that, during the perihatching period of robust cell proliferation, dividing dark cells may give rise primarily, but not exclusively, to dark cell progeny.      

First record of Palisada maris-rubri (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta) from the Mediterranean Sea along with three proposed transfers to the genus Palisada

The first occurrence of Palisada maris-rubri (K.W. Nam et Saito) K.W. Nam (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae) from the Mediterranean Sea, is reported. To date the species was known only from tetrasporic specimens from the type locality (Ras Muhammed, Sinai, Egypt, Red Sea). Mediterranean thalli share nearly all vegetative and reproductive features with Red Sea specimens showing more robust thalli with axes to 3 mm broad and ultimate branchlets to 1000 µm broad, absence of intercellular spaces between medullary cells and epidermal cells in transverse section with a palisade arrangement. Male and cystocarpic thalli are recorded for the first time. Moreover, the analysis of characters of three species of Chondrophycus previously known from the Mediterranean Sea ( C. patentirameus (Montagne) K.W. Nam, C. tenerrimus (Cremades) G. Furnari et al. and C. thuyoides (Kützing) G. Furnari) led us to conclude that they belong to the genus Palisada . The following new combinations are formally proposed: P. patentiramea (Montagne) Serio et al., P. thuyoides (Kützing) Serio et al., P. tenerrima (Cremades) Serio et al.
