Tattoos and non-conventional piercings are used in many societies. There are several social reasons for which people use these forms of body decorations (e.g., marking social status or signaling membership within a subculture). However, it is interesting why only some people within a group that uses body decoration as a badge of membership decide upon such decorations. Since both tattoos and piercings can present health risks (e.g., due to blood-borne disease transmission risk), we postulate that people who decide to have such a body decoration might have relatively higher biological quality and that tattoos/piercings can be an honest signal of genetic quality. The possible opposite hypothesis is the “attractiveness increase hypothesis,” according to which people use body decorations to increase their own physical attractiveness or to hide some shortcomings in their appearance (e.g., low body symmetry). To test these hypotheses, we compared body fluctuating asymmetry, which is considered a good measure of developmental stability, between individuals wearing tattoos and/or non-conventional piercings (n=116) and a control group (without such body decorations) (n=86). We found that majority of the absolute and relative fluctuating asymmetry indices had significantly lower values in individuals with tattoos/piercings than in the control group. This effect was strongly driven by males. Higher body symmetry of the men having tattoo or piercing indicates that this type of body decoration in the western society can be related to the honest signal of biological quality only for men. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) has been widely used for many years and belongs to the most toxic pollutants. Spent engine oils enter environment every day in many ways. Both of them cause great environmental concern. In the present work we focused on identifying metabolites of PCP biodegradation formed in the cultures of Mucor ramosissimus IM 6203 and optimizing medium composition to enhance PCP removal in the presence of engine oil acting as a carbon source.Pentachlorophenol (PCP) to tetrachlorohydroquinone (TCHQ) transformation was the most interesting transformation conducted by the tested strain. TCHQ was further transformed to 2,3,5,6-TCP and 2,3,4,6-TCP. Strain IM 6203 is also capable of PCP transformation to corresponding anisoles – pentachloromethoxybenzene (PCMB) and pentachloroethoxybenzene (PCEB). Characterization of enzymatic background involved in PCP to TCHQ transformation showed that TCHQ formation is catalyzed by inductive and cytochrome P-450 dependent enzymatic system. Experiments conducted on mineral medium allowed defining the optimal quantitative and qualitative medium make-up for PCP to TCHQ transformation. Biodegradation of PCP on the optimized synthetic medium X was more efficient than on rich Sabouraud medium. The tested strain is capable of growing in the presence of spent engine oil therefore we checked the ability of PCP transformation on optimized synthetic medium containing oil as a carbon source. The obtained results showed that PCP removal and TCHQ formation occurred were found to be the most efficient on the oil containing medium (OX medium). PCP removal and TCHQ formation after 240 h of culturing reached 1.19 mg/l and 0.89 mg/l, respectively. Additionally, 55.5% of oil introduced to the medium was removed during 10 days of the experiment.PCP biodegradation mechanisms used by Mucor species have not been sufficiently explained. The presented results point to the tested strain as an interesting model for the research on fungal PCP biodegradation in the areas highly contaminated with engine oil and for its future application in PCP and oils removal. 相似文献

Antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) employs the combination of nontoxic photosensitizing dyes and visible light to kill pathogenic microorganisms regardless of drug‐resistance, and can be used to treat localized infections. A meso‐substituted tetra‐methylpyridinium porphyrin with one methyl group replaced by a C12 alkyl chain (FS111) and its Pd‐derivative (FS111‐Pd) were synthesized and tested as broad‐spectrum antimicrobial photosensitizers when excited by blue light (5 or 10 J/cm2). Both compounds showed unprecedented activity, with the superior FS111‐Pd giving 3 logs of killing at 1 nM, and eradication at 10 nM for Gram‐positive methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus. For the Gram‐negative Escherichia coli, both compounds produced eradication at 100 nM, while against the fungal yeast Candida albicans, both compounds produced eradication at 500 nM. Both compounds could be categorized as generators of singlet oxygen (ΦΔ = 0.62 for FS111 and 0.71 for FS111‐Pd). An in vivo study was carried out using a mouse model of localized infection in a partial thickness skin abrasion caused by bioluminescent Gram‐negative uropathogenic E. coli. Both compounds were effective in reducing bioluminescent signal in a dose‐dependent manner when excited by blue light (405 nm), but aPDI with FS111‐Pd was somewhat superior both during light and in preventing recurrence during the 6 days following PDT. 相似文献

Optical imaging offers high sensitivity and portability at low cost. The design of ‘smart’ or ‘activatable’ probes can decrease the background noise and increase the specificity of the signal. By conjugating a fluorescent dye and a compatible quencher on each side of an enzyme's substrate, the signal remains in its ‘off ’ state until it reaches the area where a specific enzyme is expressed. However, the signal can leak from that area unless the dye is attached to a molecule able to bind to a specific target also presented in that area. The aim of this study was to (i) specifically conjugate the quencher on the α‐amino group of the peptide's N‐terminus, (ii) conjugate the dye on the ε‐amino group of a lysine in C‐terminus, and (iii) conjugate the carboxyl group of the peptide's C‐terminus to an amino group present on an antibody, using carbodiimide chemistry. The use of protecting groups, such as Boc or Fmoc, to allow site‐specific conjugation, presents several drawbacks including ‘on beads labeling’, additional steps required for deprotection and removal from the resin, decreased yield, and dye degradation. A method of preferential labeling of α‐amino N‐terminal group in slightly acidic solution, proposed by Selo et al. (1996) has partially solved the problem. The present study reports improvements of the method allowing to (i) avoid the homo‐bilabeling, (ii) increase the yield of the N‐terminal labeling by two folds, and (iii) decrease the cost by 44‐fold. Temperature is the environmental factor that systematically changes for decades and, as in plants and animals, can significantly affect the growth and development of fungi, including the abundance of their sporulation. During the time of study (2010–2012), a rapid increase in air temperature was observed in Poland, which coincided with the substantial decrease in rainfall. The increase in annual mean temperatures at three monitoring sites of this study was 0.9 °C in Lublin and Rzeszow (east Poland) and 2.0 °C in Poznan (west Poland). Such warming of air masses was comparable to the average global air temperature rise in the period of 1880–2012 accounting for 0.85 °C, as reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Moreover, there was a substantial decrease in rainfall, ranging from 32.7 % (Poznan) to 43.0 % (Rzeszow). We have demonstrated that under such conditions the mean and median values of total Cladosporium spore counts significantly increased and the spore seasons were greatly accelerated. Moreover, earlier start and later end of the season caused its extension, lasting from over 20 days in Rzeszow to around 60 days in Lublin and Poznan, when the cumulative amount of 5–95 % of spores was considered. The time of reaching the cumulative amount of 50 % of spores was up to 25 days earlier (difference in Poznan between 2010 and 2012). There was also a striking acceleration of the date of the maximal Cladosporium spore concentration per cubic metre of air (26 days for Lublin, 43 for Poznan and 56 for Rzeszow). 相似文献
