Hydrothermal activity was common on the early Earth and associated micro‐organisms would most likely have included thermophilic to hyperthermophilic species. 3.5–3.3 billion‐year‐old, hydrothermally influenced rocks contain silicified microbial mats and colonies that must have been bathed in warm to hot hydrothermal emanations. Could they represent thermophilic or hyperthermophilic micro‐organisms and if so, how were they preserved? We present the results of an experiment to silicify anaerobic, hyperthermophilic micro‐organisms from the Archaea Domain Pyrococcus abyssi and Methanocaldococcus jannaschii, that could have lived on the early Earth. The micro‐organisms were placed in a silica‐saturated medium for periods up to 1 year. Pyrococcus abyssi cells were fossilized but the M. jannaschii cells lysed naturally after the exponential growth phase, apart from a few cells and cell remains, and were not silicified although their extracellular polymeric substances were. In this first simulated fossilization of archaeal strains, our results suggest that differences between species have a strong influence on the potential for different micro‐organisms to be preserved by fossilization and that those found in the fossil record represent probably only a part of the original diversity. Our results have important consequences for biosignatures in hydrothermal or hydrothermally influenced deposits on Earth, as well as on early Mars, as environmental conditions were similar on the young terrestrial planets and traces of early Martian life may have been similarly preserved as silicified microfossils.  相似文献

Background

A strong genetic influence by the MHC class II region has been reported in sarcoidosis, however in many studies with different results. This may possibly be caused by actual differences between distinct ethnic groups, too small sample sizes, or because of lack of accurate clinical subgrouping.

Subjects and methods

In this study we HLA typed a large patient population (n = 754) recruited from one single centre. Patients were sub-grouped into those with Löfgren''s syndrome (LS) (n = 302) and those without (non-Löfgren''s) (n = 452), and the majority of them were clinically classified into those with recovery within two years (resolving) and those with signs of disease for more than two years (non-resolving). PCR was used for determination of HLA-DRB1 alleles. Swedish healthy blood donors (n = 1366) served as controls.

Results

There was a dramatic difference in the distribution of HLA alleles in LS compared to non-LS patients (p = 4 × 10-36). Most notably, DRB1*01, DRB1*03 and DRB1*14, clearly differed in LS and non-LS patients. In relation to disease course, DRB1*07, DRB1*14 and DRB1*15 generally associated with, while DRB1*01 and DRB1*03 protected against, a non-resolving disease. Interestingly, the clinical influence of DRB1*03 (good prognosis) dominated over that of DRB1*15 (bad prognosis).

Conclusions

We found several significant differences between LS and non-LS patients and we therefore suggest that genetic association studies in sarcoidosis should include a careful clinical characterisation and sub-grouping of patients, in order to reveal true genetic associations. This may be particularly accurate to do in the heterogeneous non-LS group of patients.  相似文献

 竹叶眼子菜(Potamogeton malaianus)、微齿眼子菜(Potamogeton maackianus)、苦草(Vallisneria spiralis)、穗花狐尾藻(Myriophyllum spicatum)、黑藻(Hydrilla verticillata)是长江中下游湖泊主要的沉水植物。在栽培条件下,它们的无性繁殖速率(单位时间内新增个体数)大小顺序为黑藻>微齿眼子菜>竹叶眼子菜>苦草>穗花狐尾藻。同时采用抛掷实验的方法观察研究了这5种沉水植物及其无性繁殖体的存活和生根情况;完整植株存活率为黑藻>穗花狐尾藻>微齿眼子菜>竹叶眼子菜>苦草,无性繁殖体部分存活率为黑藻>苦草>穗花狐尾藻>微齿眼子菜>竹叶眼子菜。生根能力和其存活时间长短相关,而且生根能力与存活率大小基本一致。在实验中,只有穗花狐尾藻的断枝存活率和生根能力存在差异,故无性繁殖体生根能力为黑藻>苦草>微齿眼子菜>竹叶眼子菜>穗花狐尾藻。  相似文献

In adult male Wistar rats submitted to a standardized noise stress, intravenous TRH induced a prolactin (PRL) secretory response. Prior IV naloxone administration not only lowered plasma PRL levels in those stressed rats but abolished also the stimulatory action of TRH. This effect was further studied by superfusion experiments on enriched PRL cell suspensions (70% lactotrophs) from female adult Wistar rats. Naloxone kept unaffected the basal PRL secretion but lowered significantly that induced by TRH. These experiments suggest a dual effect of naloxone on rat PRL secretion, one exerted on central opioid receptors lowering stress-related increased basal PRL levels, the other inhibiting the TRH-dependent PRL secretion exerted at the lactotroph level itself.  相似文献

Communication among animals often comprises several signallers and receivers within the signal’s transmission range. In such communication networks, individuals can extract information about differences in relative performance of conspecifics by eavesdropping on their signalling interactions. In songbirds, information can be encoded in the timing of signals, which either alternate or overlap, and both male and female receivers may utilise this information when engaging in territorial interactions or making reproductive decisions, respectively. We investigated how conspecific background noise at dawn may overlay and possibly constrain the perception of such singing patterns. We simulated a small communication network of blue tits, Cyanistes caeruleus, at dawn in spring. Two loudspeakers simulated a singing interaction which was recorded from four different receiver positions simulating potential eavesdroppers. During the recordings, resident blue tit males were vocalising and created natural conspecific background noise. Levels of conspecific background noise were high and varied among positions of potential eavesdroppers. We conclude that conspecific background vocalisations may potentially constrain the perception of singing patterns and may constitute costs for eavesdroppers. On the other hand, signallers may position themselves strategically and privatise their interactions.  相似文献

White clover plants were grown from stolon tips in growth cabinetsand then defoliated. Thereafter, changes in the contents ofnon-structural carbohydrates such as starch, sucrose, glucose,fructose, maltose, and pinitol in stolons and roots were monitored.Initial contents of carbohydrate reserves, photosynthetic supplyof new carbohydrates and carbohydrate demand after defoliationwere varied by growing the plants at various CO2 partial pressures,by varying the extent of defoliation and by removing eitherroots or stolon tips at the time of defoliation. Remobilization of carbohydrate reserves in stolons increasedproportionally to their initial contents and was greater whenplants had been severely defoliated, suggesting that carbohydrateswere remobilized according to availability and demand. Starchwas the predominant reserve carbohydrate. Starch degradationwas associated with decreased contents of sucrose, glucose andfructose in young stolon parts and roots but not in old stolonparts suggesting that starch degradation was not strictly controlledby the contents of these sugars. A decrease in the demand forcarbohydrates by removal of roots did not decrease starch degradationbut increased the contents of sucrose, glucose, and fructose.Removal of stolon tips decreased starch degradation and contentsof sucrose, glucose, and fructose. The results suggest thatstarch degradation was controlled by a factor other than sucrose,glucose, and fructose which was exported from stolon tips, e.g.gibberellin. With the aim of elucidating mechanisms behind bacteria-induced deleterious effects and differential cultivar responses to bacterial inoculations, wheat seedlings were subjected to various tests under gnotobiotic conditions. Inoculation with two deleterious Pseudomonas isolates, Å 112 (fluorescent) and Å 313 (nonfluorescent), induced leaf symptoms and shoot and root growth inhibition, while inoculation with growthneutral bacteria (Serratia liquefaciens andEscherichia coli) had no such effects. Deleterious effects were induced at low inoculum densities (<103 cells per plant), but required addition of nutrient broth in small amounts for consistency. Effects similar to those obtained with living inoculum could be induced by treating plants with sterile culture filtrates from isolate Å 313 or volatile bacterial metabolites from isolate Å 112. Wheat cultivars previously found to differ in their reaction to inoculation under non-sterile conditions, responded differentially to Å 112 and Å 313 also in the gnotobiotic assay. The results agree with the hypothesis that neither cultivar reaction nor the bacterial effects as such are mediated by interactions with an indigenous rhizosphere microflora.  相似文献
