Bed rest deconditioning leads to physiological cardiac atrophy, which may compromise left ventricular (LV) filling during orthostatic stress by reducing diastolic untwisting and suction. To test this hypothesis, myocardial-tagged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed, and maximal untwisting rates of the endocardium, midwall, and epicardium were calculated by Harmonic Phase Analysis (HARP) before and after -6 degrees head-down tilt bed rest for 18 days with (n = 14) and without exercise training (n = 10). LV mass and LV end-diastolic volume were measured using cine MRI. Exercise subjects cycled on a supine ergometer for 30 min, three times per day at 75% maximal heart rate (HR). After sedentary bed rest, there was a significant reduction in maximal untwisting rates of the midwall (-46.8 +/- 14.3 to -35.4 +/- 12.4 degrees /s; P = 0.04) where untwisting is most reliably measured, and to a lesser degree of certainty in the endocardium (-50.3 +/- 13.8 to -40.1 +/- 18.5 degrees /s; P = 0.09); the epicardium was unchanged. In contrast, when exercise was performed in bed, untwisting rates were enhanced at the endocardium (-48.4 +/- 20.8 to -72.3 +/- 22.3 degrees /ms; P = 0.05) and midwall (-39.2 +/- 12.2 to -59.0 +/- 19.6 degrees /s; P = 0.03). The differential response was significant between groups at the endocardium (interaction P = 0.02) and the midwall (interaction P = 0.004). LV mass decreased in the sedentary group (156.4 +/- 30.3 to 149.5 +/- 27.9 g; P = 0.07), but it increased slightly in the exercise-trained subjects (156.4 +/- 34.3 to 162.3 +/- 40.5 g; P = 0.16); (interaction P = 0.03). We conclude that diastolic untwisting is impaired following sedentary bed rest. However, exercise training in bed can prevent the physiological cardiac remodeling associated with bed rest and preserve or even enhance diastolic suction.  相似文献

Landscape context influences population dynamics of insects and impacts biological processes within communities. It was expected that anthropogenic disturbances of the rainforest landscape in DR Congo would lead to a decreased level of noctuid stemborer egg parasitism as a consequence of a decoupling between stemborers and their naturally occurring parasitoids through dispersal. To test this hypothesis, noctuid egg batches were collected in maize fields along an anthropogenic disturbance gradient to assess change in the rates of eggs parasitism and maize plant infestation with noctuid egg batches. Our results showed that, in contrast to what was initially expected, egg parasitism increased from less to highly disturbed landscape whereas maize infestation had an inverse tendency. Discovery efficiency and mean egg parasitism were 1.416 and 1.392 times higher, respectively, in the most than in the less disturbed landscape. The numbers of eggs and egg batches per 100 maize plants were 0.55 times and 0.532 times the value in the less disturbed landscape, suggesting a dilution of the stemborer population within a large habitat patch encompassing cultivated fields and the surrounding wild host plants. It was concluded that the presence of suitable host plants enhances noctuid stemborers egg parasitism in adjacent maize fields.  相似文献

A fragmentary hominid cranium with teeth, specimen L.894-1, dating from 1.84 m.y. BP in the Shungura Formation at Omo, is described. From its dental and cranial morphology and because of similarities to Olduvai Hominids 24 and 13 and Sangiran 4, among others, it is concluded that the specimen represents a member of an early species of the genus Homo (Homo habilis or Homo modjokertensis). The specimen shows approximal grooving on the premolars, pre-mortem chipping of the molar enamel, foramina ovale and spinosum divided by the sphenosquamosal suture, limited pneumatization of the mastoid region, and a possible interparietal bone. Sedimentological, ostracod, pollen, macrofloral, and taphonomic data indicate that the paleo-environmental context was a savanna/grassland or savanna woodland on the margin of a saline lake.  相似文献

Human plasma and atypical lung converting enzyme, and porcine plasma converting enzyme are substantially inhibited by other components of the renin-angiotensin system, and by angiotensin II and its analogues. Des-Asp1 angiotensin II (angiotensin III) 0.1 mM and tridecapeptide renin substrate 0.1 mM are both effective inhibitors of human lung, plasma and porcine plasma converting enzymes. Des-Asp1-Arg2 angiotensin II also was an effective inhibitor of plasma enzymes. Bradykininase activity (kininase II) of the converting enzymes was also inhibited by angiotensin I, angiotensin III, tetradecapeptide renin substrate and tridecapeptide renin substrate. The substantial kininase and converting enzyme inhibitory effects of components of the renin-angiotensin system, suggest a potential close physiologic relationship between the kallikrein-kinin system and the renin-angiotensin system.  相似文献

A bloom of the unicellular green alga Dunaliella parva (up to 15 000 cells m1–1) developed in the upper 5 m of the water column of the Dead Sea in May-June 1992. This was the first mass development of Dunaliella observed in the lake since 1980, when another bloom was reported (up to 8800 cells m1–1). For a bloom of Dunaliella to develop in the Dead Sea, two conditions must be fulfilled: the salinity of the upper water layers must become sufficiently low as a result of dilution with rain floods, and phosphate must be available. During the period 1983–1991 the lake was holomictic, hardly any dilution with rainwater occurred, and no Dunaliella cells were observed. Heavy rain floods in the winter of 1991–1992 caused a new stratification, in which the upper 5 m of the water column became diluted to about 70% of their former salinity. Measurements of the isotopic composition of inorganic carbon in the upper water layer during the bloom (13C = 5.1) indicate a strong fractionation when compared with the estimated –3.4 prior to the bloom. The particulate organic carbon formed was highly enriched in light carbon isotopes ( 13 C = – 13.5). The algal bloom rapidly declined during the months June–July, probably as a result of the formation of resting stages, which sank to the bloom. A smaller secondary bloom (up to 1850 cells m1–1) developed between 6 and 10 m depth at the end of the summer. Salinity values at this deep chlorophyll maximum were much beyond those conductive for the growth of Dunaliella, and the factors responsible for the development of this bloom are still unclear.  相似文献

Prokaryotic expression vector pMON3401 encoding full size A(−1) chicken leptin (AF012727) was prepared by PCR of previously described cDNA.Escherichia colicells transformed with this vector overexpressed large amounts of chicken leptin upon induction with nalidixic acid. The expressed protein found in the inclusion bodies was refolded and purified to homogeneity on a Q-Sepharose column, yielding two electrophoretically pure fractions (leptin-1 and leptin-2), eluted from the column by 100 and 125 mM NaCl. Both fractions showed a single band of the expected molecular mass of 16 kDa and were composed of over 95% of monomeric protein. The biological activity of both fractions, resulting from proper renaturation, was further evidenced by their ability to stimulate proliferation of leptin-sensitive BAF/3 cells transfected with a long form of human leptin–receptor construct and by lowering the food intake of starved chicken following intravenal or intraperitoneal injections.  相似文献

Components of the total sexual investment of plants growing under mediterranean climatic and edaphic conditions were compared with those of plants growing in the desert, in the closely related allogamous species pair Erucaria hispanica and E. rostrata and in populations of the autogamous species Erophila minima. In all cases lower total investment was evident in the desert plants. At the prezygotic phase it was expressed by (1) reduced production of flowers; (2) lower allocation to the production of male gametophytes and some floral organs; and (3) packaging of more ovules per ovary. The ratio of reproductive: vegetative biomass which was found to be greater in the desert plants and their lower pollen: ovule ratio are perhaps indicative of greater efficiency. Their smaller investment at the postzygotic phase was expressed in: (1) reduction in total numbers of fruits and seeds; (2) decrease in seed size and weight. Yet in the desert plants the number of seeds per total biomass was found to be significantly larger and fertility rates (seed-set per ovule, fruit-set per flower per plant) were equal to or greater than those in the mediterranean plants. The trends observed in this study in desert plants, which may result in more efficient exploitation of resources, are similar in the species involved, regardless of their breeding system-autogamous or allogamous.  相似文献
