In sexually promiscuous animals, females may benefit by nestingclose to the edge of their partner's territory to facilitateextrapair copulations. In the present study, we describe theextrapair mating system of black-capped chickadees, Poecileatricapillus, and test whether nest locations are influencedby conspecific attraction to extrapair partners. We conducteda spatial analysis of female mating strategies by using microsatellitepaternity analysis in conjunction with geographic informationsystem (GIS) analysis of nest and territory locations. Extrapairoffspring comprised 52 of 351 offspring (14.8%) and were presentin 19 of 57 broods (33.3%). Females paired to males with lowdominance status in the previous winter's flock hierarchy weremore likely to engage in a mixed reproductive strategy thanwere females paired to males with high dominance status. Femaleshad extrapair copulations and extrapair fertilizations withhigh-ranking males more often than with low-ranking males. Notall extrapair copulations resulted in extrapair fertilizations.Females constructed their nests within 16.8 ± 1.0 m ofthe edge of their partner's territory, significantly closerto the edge of their nearest neighbor's territory than to thecenter of their own partner's territory. Extrapair males usuallyshared territory boundaries with cuckolded males. Females pairedto low-ranking males constructed nests near the territory edgesof neighboring high-ranking males. However, females did nothave extrapair copulations with the neighbor nearest to theirnest or even with the high-ranking neighbor nearest to theirnest. We conclude that conspecific attraction to neighbors mayinfluence nesting location in black-capped chickadees; however,it does not operate by facilitating extrapair copulations.  相似文献

This study examines geneticstructure of central and eastern North American Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus)populations. Samples derived from 27populations (n = 206) covering the range of threerecognized subspecies: L. l. migrans,L. l. ludovicianus, and L. l.excubitorides, and included locales from aputative intergrade zone between twosubspecies. For L. l. migrans, samplesinclude both those from extant populations andfrom museum specimens spanning approximately130 years. For all samples we obtained 267 basepairs of mitochondrial control region sequenceand identified a total of 23 distincthaplotypes. For a subset of samplesrepresenting a locale centered on the Canadianportion of an intergrade zone between migrans and excubitorides and locales onalternate sides of the intergrade, we obtainedadditional sequence for an intron of thenuclear glyceraldehyde-3-phosphatedehydrogenase gene. Analyses of temporal trendsin control region diversity of L. l.migrans populations indicate a diminutioncoincident with the decline in populationnumbers. Results from an Analysis of MolecularVariance on the control region data showed thata significant amount of total control regionspatial variation was apportioned among thethree subspecies (24.42%; P < 0.01). Furtheranalyses indicated statistically significantdifferences between eastern and westernpopulations of L. l. migrans. We found nosignificant differences among consideredpopulations in frequencies of six identifiedGpdh alleles, although this result ispreliminary because of small sample sizes.However, both the mitochondrial and intron datasuggest a higher genetic diversity in theintergrade zone. Based on our analyses wedefine four management units for eastern andcentral populations of Loggerhead Shrikes.  相似文献

Loss of habitat and poaching have led to a drastic reduction in numbers of the Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis). To aid in the conservation management of this species, we isolated and optimized 10 polymorphic Sumatran rhinoceros microsatellite loci. A survey of six individuals yielded a mean number of alleles of 3.7, mean expected heterozygosity of 0.551 and probability of identity of 3.46 × 10?8. Although this estimate is similar to estimates of microsatellite variability in the Black, Indian and White rhinoceroses, such a conclusion is premature as locus purity, sample size and number of loci surveyed vary significantly among studies.  相似文献

Optimal sex allocation for individuals can be predicted from a number of different hypotheses. Fisherian models of sex allocation predict equal investment in males and females up to the end of parental care and predict brood compositions based on the relative costs of producing males and females. The Trivers-Willard hypothesis predicts that individual females should alter the sex ratio of their broods based on their own condition if it has a differential impact on the lifetime reproductive success of their sons and daughters. The Charnov model of sex allocation predicts that females should alter sex allocation based on paternal attributes that may differentially benefit sons versus daughters. Because females are the heterogametic sex in birds, many recent studies have focussed on primary sex ratio biases. In black-capped chickadees Poecile atricapilla , males are larger than females suggesting they may be more costly to raise than females. Female condition affects competitive ability in contests for mates, and thus may be related to variance in fecundity. Females prefer high-ranking males as both social and extrapair partners. These observations suggest that females might vary the sex ratio of their broods based on the predictions of any of the above models. Here, we report on the results of PCR based sex determination of 1093 nestlings in 175 broods sampled from 1992 to 2001. Population-wide, we found a mean brood sex ratio of 0.525±0.016, with no significant deviation from a predicted binomial distribution. We found no effect of clutch size, female condition, hatch date, parental rank or paternity. Our results reject the idea that female black-capped chickadees systematically vary sex allocation in their broods.  相似文献

Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) show one of the highestlevels of extrapair paternity in birds, and there is evidencethat females have control over who fathers their offspring.However, it is unclear which benefits female tree swallows obtainfrom mating with multiple males. Using microsatellite DNA fingerprinting,we studied extrapair paternity in relation to nesting successand male, female, and offspring characteristics. More than 70%of all nests contained extrapair young, and more than half ofall offspring were extrapair. Within broods, the extrapair youngwere often fathered by several males. Despite screening allresident and some floater males, we could identify the biologicalfather of only 21% of all extrapair offspring. All identifiedextrapair males were close neighbors. Extrapair males did notdiffer from within-pair males in any of the measured characteristics,except that the former had larger cloacal protuberances than thelatter. Extrapair males were equally successful in gaining paternityin their own broods as males that did not father extra young.In nests with mixed paternity, extrapair young did not differfrom within-pair young in body size or mass. However, nestswith extrapair young had higher hatching success than nestswithout extrapair young. All examined unhatched eggs were fertilizedand thus hatch failure resulted from embryo mortality. The availabledata are in accordance with the genetic diversity and the geneticcompatibility hypothesis, but not with the good genes hypothesis.  相似文献

Positions of multiple insertions in SSU rDNA of lichen-forming fungi   总被引:11,自引:3,他引:8  
Lichen-forming fungi, in symbiotic associations with algae, frequently have nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) longer than the 1,800 nucleotides typical for eukaryotes. The lichen-forming ascomycetous fungus Lecanora dispersa contains insertions at eight distinct positions of its SSU rDNA; the lichen-forming fungi Calicium tricolor and Porpidia crustulata each contain one insertion. Insertions are not limited to fungi that form lichens; the lichen ally Mycocalicium albonigrum also contains two insertions. Of the 11 insertion positions now reported for lichen-forming fungi and this ally, 6 positions are known only from lichen-forming fungi. Including the 4 newly reported in this study, insertions are now known from at least 17 positions among all reported SSU rDNA sequences. Insertions, most of which are Group I introns, are reported in fungal and protistan lineages and occur at corresponding positions in genomes as phylogenetically distant as the nuclei of fungi, green algae, and red algae. Many of these positions are exposed in the mature rRNA tertiary structure and may be subject to independent insertion of introns. Insertion of introns, accompanied by their sporadic loss, accounts for the scattered distribution of insertions observed within the SSU rDNA of these diverse organisms.   相似文献

The brush border, isolated from chicken intestine epithelial cells, contains the 95,000 relative molecular mass (M(r)) polypeptide, villin. This report describes the purification and characterization of villin as a Ca(++)-dependent, actin bundling/depolymerizing protein. Then 100,000 g supernatant from a Ca(++) extract of isolated brush borders is composed of three polypeptides of 95,000 (villin), 68,000 (fimbrin), and 42,000 M(r) (actin). Villin, following purification from this extract by differential ammonium sulfate precipitation and ion-exchange chromatography, was mixed with skeletal muscle F-actin. Electron microscopy of negatively stained preparations of these villin-actin mixtures showed that filament bundles were present. This viscosity, sedimentability, and ultrastructural morphology of filament bundles are dependent on the villin:actin molar ratio, the pH, and the free Ca(++) concentration in solution. At low free Ca(++) (less than 10(-6) M), the amount of protein in bundles, when measured by sedimentation, increased as the villin: actin molar ratio increased and reached a plateau at approximately a 4:10 ratio. This behavior correlates with the conversion of single actin filaments into filament bundles as detected in the electron microscope. At high free Ca(++) (more than 10(-6) M), there was a decrease in the apparent viscosity in the villin-actin mixtures to a level measured for the buffer. Furthermore, these Ca(++) effects were correlated with the loss of protein sedimented, the disappearance of filament bundles, and the appearance of short fragments of filaments. Bundle formation is also pH-sensitive, being favored at mildly acidic pH. A decrease in the pH from 7.6 to 6.6 results in an increase in sedimentable protein and also a transformation of loosly associated actin filaments into compact actin bundles. These results are consistent with the suggestions that villin is a bundling protein in the microvillus and is responsible for the Ca(++)-sensitive disassembly of the microvillar cytoskeleton. Thus villin may function in the cytoplasm as a major cytoskeletal element regulating microvillar shape.  相似文献

The levels of stromal photosynthetic intermediates were measured in isolated intact spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts exposed to reduced osmotic potentials. Stressed chloroplasts showed slower rates of metabolite accumulation upon illumination than controls. Relative to other metabolites sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphate (SBP) and fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (FBP) accumulated in the stroma in the stressed treatments. Under these conditions 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA) efflux to the medium was restricted. Chloroplasts previously incubated with [32P]KH2PO4 and [32P]dihydroxyacetone phosphate ([32P]DAP) in the dark were characterized by very high FBP and SBP levels prior to illumination. Metabolism of these pools upon illumination increased with increasing pH of the medium but was consistently inhibited in osmotically stressed chloroplasts.
