Enzymes of the jejunal enterochromaffine cells in man

Summary A study of enzymatic equipment of enterochromaffine cells (e.c.) in jenual biopsies obtained with a Crosby capsule in normal humans and patients with nontropical sprue was undertaken. The following enzymes were demonstrated: alkaline phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase (cell membrane), acid phosphatase (corpuscular), non-specific esterase (diffuse and corpuscular, predominantly eserine resistant, in corpuscular localization E 600 resistant), DPN- and TPN-diaphorases and dehydrogenases of lactic acid, malic acid, isocitric acid, glucoso-6-phosphoric acid, succinic acid, -hydroxybutyric acid and -glycerophosphoric acid. Enzyme activities were not equal in all cells suggesting some type of secretory cycle. In most patients with untreated nontropical sprue or with the disease in relapse e.c. were more numerous and hypertrophic with elevated activities of non-specific esterase and acid phosphatase. Changes in the anatomical structure of the shoot apex ofSenecio vulgaris L. during ontogenis in relation to the formation of leaves and inflorescence

An investigation was made of the anatomical structure of the shoot apex ofSenecio vulgaris L. a photoperiodically neutral plant, and compared with the formation of successive leaf primordia along the axis up to the initiation of the terminal inflorescence. In the shoot apex of a germinating plant a central zone can first be distinguished from the peripheral zone which is composed of small and intensely stained cells. Later, a rib meristem appears. At the time of the initiation of the middle (the largest) leaves, the shoot apex has a distinct small central zone and a well developed peripheral zone and rib meristem. Between these zones there is a group of cells dividing in all directions, the subcentral zone. At the time of initiation of the last leaves, the central zone extends to the flanks and gradually ceases to be distinguishable. At the same time, the subcentral zone increases in size. This is caused first by cell division and later, with the initiation of the last, most reduced leaves, by enlargement of the cells. Vacuolization in the inner part of the apex and the arrangement of the superficial cells in rows parallel to the surface of the apex, is a preparatory step to the initiation of the inflorescence.     

Three fluorescent probes for the flow-cytometric assessment of membrane potential inSaccharomyces cerevisiœ

Three fluorescent probes, tetramethyl rhodamine ethyl ester (TMRE), 3,3′-dipropylthiacarbocyanine iodide (diS-C₃(3)) and 3,3′-dipropyloxacarbocyanine iodide (diO-C₃(3)), were tested for their suitability as fluorescent indicators of membrane potential inSaccharomyces cerevisiœ in studies performed by flow cytometry. For all these dyes the intensity of fluorescence of stained cells increased with probe concentration in the range of 60–3000 nmol/L. The optimum staining period was 15–20 min for diS-C₃(3). Depolarization of cells by increased extracellular potassium level and by valinomycin elicited with all probes a drop in fluorescence intensity. In some yeast batches this depolarization was accompanied by a separation of subpopulations with different fluorescence properties.     

Letters to the metanarrative: Totalitarian “enjoyment” and self representation in postcommunist Serbia

Conclusion This outline of the instrumentality of the technology/technique of representation in postcommunist Serbia is but a brief attempt to address the modes of production of identity in postmodernism, its legitimation in/of dominant discourse, and their embedding in common sense language and practice. Postcommunist Serbia is obviously a special situation:²³ a particular case of the social appropriation and construction of enjoyment and desire, intimately related to the desires and various enjoyments of the members of the community, precarious in its collective affirmation. Based on the idea of contingent collectivity, faction-fiction, in its meta-critique seems to signal the emergence of a new régime in the relation between historical reality and its representation in historical narratives.This new régime, obviously, cannot be exhaustively (or even extensively) discussed in a brief paper like this one. Nevertheless, some (three) points of departure for the general discussion of postmodern modes of representation are still possible. One such point of departure is the contingence of representation, another the apparent paradigmatic similarity between trash talk-shows and Echoes and Reactions. Variance deficit is not reliable evidence for niche limitation

Variance deficit in the number of species per sampling unit, as compared to a null model with species occurring independently of each other has been considered by various authors to be evidence for niche limitation. I show that simpler mechanisms could explain this phenomenon. Of those, the competition of individuals for space limits the number of individuals per sampling unit, resulting in decrease of variance in species richness. Testing the proportions of species belonging to various guilds seems to be more ecologically interesting, although here also the variance deficit can hardly be taken as reliable evidence for niche limitation.     

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) granules ofBacillus megaterium

Cells ofBacillus megaterium contain 35–45% of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) at the beginning of the stationary phase. This amount is only slightly affected by the medium composition. The PHB granules are spherical with the mean diameter of 1.15 μm.
