Synopsis The Río Bayano in eastern Panama is one of many tropical rivers in which bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) and largetooth sawfish (Pristis perotteti) have been known to occur. Since both species can osmoregulate in fresh water throughout life, theoretically, both could survive in landlocked situations for many years.P. perotteti reproduces in fresh water, butC. leucas ordinarily does not, so only the former would appear to have the potential for establishing a breeding stock in such a landlocked freshwater body. The damming of the Rio Bayano and the creation of a large impoundment in 1976 provides a test of the ability of members of both species trapped there to survive and to establish breeding stocks. In 1980 and 1981 three mature femaleC. leucas were found dead in Lake Bayano and three sub-adult femaleP. perotteti were taken by trammel net. These events confirm the ability of both to survive in fresh water for long periods, but the establishment of breeding stocks appears doubtful and the question may not be answered for many years. 相似文献
It has previously been suggested that the historically and geographically widespread persistence of religious beliefs occurs because it is a by-product of normal cognitive processes, ones which first evolved to confer survival advantages in the social domain. If this theory holds, then it is likely that inter-individual variation in the same biases may predict corresponding variation in religious thoughts and behaviors. Using an online questionnaire, 298 participants answered questions regarding their tendency to detect agency, the degree to which they displayed schizotypal traits, their ability to understand the emotions and motivations of others (“mentalizing”), and their religious beliefs and behaviors. Path analysis suggests that mentalizing, agency detection, and schizotypal thinking were each independently related to religiosity. Furthermore, schizotypal thinking and agency detection were highly interrelated with one another, whereas mentalizing was not. Although the degree to which an individual engages with religious or spiritual beliefs will be influenced by their cultural and historical context, this paper helps to elucidate the interplay between various cognitive processes that might predispose some individuals but not others toward holding such beliefs in the first place. 相似文献
For their seasonal control of thermogenesis Djungarian hamsters rely on environmental cueing by both photoperiod and ambient temperature. Their total potential for adaptive improvements of nonshivering thermogenesis is constant in summer and winter. The shortening of photoperiod in fall is used to anticipate about half of the total improvement in thermogenesis, in advance of any experience of cold, as can be concluded from the photoperiodic control of thermogenesis, cold resistance, and the protein content, cyctochrome oxidase activity and content of mitochondria in brown adipose tissue. The remainder of the seasonal thermogenic adaptation is due to stimulatory responses to chronic exposure to cold. This research was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Schwerpunktprogramm Mechanismen der Temperaturregulation und -Adaptation. 相似文献
The intracerebroventricular administration of lead or cadmium to mice produced a marked decrease in body temperature. The maximum decreases in body temperature produced by the central administration of the heavy metals (1.97±0.3°C for lead and 2.87±0.6°C for cadmium) were similar to those obtained after acute peripheral administration of these compounds. The decreases in body temperature obtained after central administration of calcium, magnesium or zinc were significantly smaller than those produced by the heavy metals. The results indicate that the central nervous system is implicated in the hypothermia induced by these divalent cations and suggest that the alteration of membrane ionic permeability by these substances at hypothalamic sites may be related to the control of body temperature. 相似文献
Application of transformation and other biotechnological tools in avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is hampered by difficulties in obtaining mature somatic embryos capable of germination at an acceptable rate. In this work, we evaluated the effect of different compounds affecting medium water relations on maturation of avocado somatic embryos. Culture media were characterized with respect to gel strength, water potential and osmotic potential. Improved production of mature somatic embryos was achieved with gelling agent concentrations higher than those considered standard. The osmotic agents such as sorbitol and PEG did not have positive effects on embryo maturation. The number of w-o mature somatic embryos per culture was positively correlated with medium gel strength. Gel strength was significantly affected by gelling agent type as well as by gelling agent and PEG concentration. Medium water potential was influenced by sorbitol concentration; incorporation of PEG to a culture medium did not affect medium water potential. The highest maturation results were achieved on a medium gelled with 10 g l−1 agar. Moreover, these somatic embryos had improved germination rates. These results corroborate the role of water restriction as a key factor controlling maturation of somatic embryos. 相似文献
Thioredoxin peroxidase 1 (TPx1) of the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum is a 2-Cys peroxiredoxin involved in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species and - as shown here - of reactive nitrogen species. As novel electron acceptor of reduced TPx1, we characterised peroxynitrite; the rate constant for ONOO- reduction by the enzyme (1 x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1) at pH 7.4 and 37 degrees C) was determined by stopped-flow measurements. As reducing substrate of TPx1, we identified - aside from thioredoxin - plasmoredoxin; this 22-kDa protein occurs only in malarial parasites. When studying the potential roles of Cys74 and Cys170 of Tpx1 in catalysis, as well as in oligomerisation behaviour, we found that replacement of Cys74 by Ala influenced neither the dimerisation nor enzymatic activity of TPx1. In the C170A mutant, however, the kcat/Km for reduced Trx as a substrate was shown to be approximately 50-fold lower and, in contrast to the wild-type enzyme, covalently linked dimers were not formed. For the catalytic cycle of TPx1, we conclude that oxidation of the peroxidatic Cys50 by the oxidising substrate is followed by the formation of an intermolecular disulfide bond between Cys50 and Cys170' of the second subunit, which is then attacked by an external electron donor such as thioredoxin or plasmoredoxin. 相似文献
PurposePreload of antagonist muscles can be achieved by reciprocal actions (RAs) or by opposing muscle actions. However, evidence concerning neuromuscular and fatigue responses are scarce.ObjectiveTo compare the effects of different knee flexor (KF) preload methods on knee extension (KE) vastus medialis muscle fatigue, based on EMG-spectral index (FI), load range (LR), total work (TW), blood lactate (LAC) and biceps femoris co-activation (BFc) during resistance exercise.MethodsTwenty-four healthy men (23.5 ± 3.6 yrs) performed three antagonist pre-load isokinetic exercises (4 sets, 10 repetitions, 60° s?1, 1 min rest between sets): RA (KF contraction immediately followed by KE); Superset (SS; one KF set immediately followed by one KE set); Multiple Set (MS; four KF sets followed by four KE sets).ResultsTotal work was significantly greater in RA. There was no significant decrease in LR between sets in RA. The BFc did not differ between protocols (p = 0.063). However, RA presented greater biceps femoriscoactivation. The FI was greater during SS compared to RA and MS (p < 0.05). The SS had greater LAC when compared to MS and RA (p = 0.005 and p = 0.007, respectively).ConclusionIt is suggested that the RA protocol is more neuromuscular and metabolic efficient during the performance of knee extension resistance exercise. 相似文献
Fungi constitute an invaluable natural resource for scientific research, owing to their diversity; they offer a promising alternative for bioprospecting, thus contributing to biotechnological advances. For a long time, extensive information has been exploited and fungal products have been tested as a source of natural compounds. In this context, enzyme production remains a field of interest, since it offers an efficient alternative to the hazardous processes of chemical transformations. Owing to their vast biodiversity and peculiar biochemical characteristics, two fungal categories, white-rot and anaerobic Neocallimastigomycota, have gathered considerable attention for biotechnological applications. These fungi are known for their ability to depolymerize complex molecular structures and are used in degradation of lignocellulosic biomass, improvement of animal feed digestibility, biogas and bioethanol production, and various other applications. However, there are only limited reports that describe proteolytic enzymes and esterases in these fungi and their synergistic action with lignocellulolytic enzymes on degradation of complex polymers. Thus, in this minireview, we focus on the importance of these organisms in enzyme technology, their bioprospecting, possibility of integration of their enzyme repertoire, and their prospects for future biotechnological innovation.
