Luminous strains of marine bacteria, isolated off the Coast of China, were subjected to a phenotypic characterization, which included a test of their ability to utilize 82 organic compounds as sole or principal sources of carbon and energy. A numerical analysis of the data revealed five clusters which were readily identified asPhotobacterium phosphoreum, P. leiognathi, Vibrio harveyi, andV. splendidus biotype I. The remaining cluster of luminous isolates was phenotypically distinct from all the previously described species ofVibrio andPhotobacterium and was given the species designation,Vibrio orientalis. This species differed from all the other luminous species ofVibrio by its ability to accumulate poly-β-hydroxybutyrate as an intracellular reserve product. Additional distinctive properties were the presence of an arginine dihydrolase system, growth at 4° but not 40°C, and the ability to utilize putrescine and spermine.  相似文献

CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF THE CELL WALLS OF ORGANISMS ISOLATED IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD FROM CASES OF LEPROMATOUS AND TUBERCULOID LEPROSY MAKE POSSIBLE THEIR ASSIGNMENT TO ONE OF THE THREE GENERA: Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium, or Propionibacterium. One, bacterium 22M, remains unassigned. Anaerobic corynebacteria (propionibacteria), isolated in pure culture from the plasma of a case of tuberculoid leprosy and from lepromata of cases of lepromatous leprosy, exhibited phenoloxidase activity such as that shown by Prabhakaran to be associated with leprosy bacilli harvested from patients suffering from leprosy. Several corynebacteria, mycobacteria, and nocardias similarly examined did not produce phenoloxidase.  相似文献

The cell growth of Nocardia strain 721-A on Brain Heart Infusion Agar (BHIA), nutrient agar, and chemically defined agar media was studied by light and electron microscopy. Light microscopy revealed a change in cell morphology induced by growth on BHIA. Electron microscopy demonstrated a concurrent change in intracellular complexity. On BHIA, the cells became bulbous and developed irregularly branched filaments which fragmented by multiple and random septation. These fragments appeared to undergo a secondary stage of development similar to that described for Arthrobacter. Cells grown on defined or nutrient agar did not become bulbous and lacked the unusual complexity found in cells grown on BHIA. Intracytoplasmic membranes were altered by the nutritional state of the cell and changed during cell development.  相似文献

One of two groups of rod-shaped bacteria (bacilli) isolated from cases of human leprosy have been found, under certain cultural conditions, to give rise to unusual phenotypes. In electron micrographs of ultrathin sections and negatively stained whole cells of these osmotically fragile bacteria, ultrastructural anomalies are apparent and seem to arise from disorder in the process(es) of septum formation or cell envelope biosynthesis or both. Two of the four strains examined are related to Corynebacterium acnes.  相似文献

Anesthetized beagle dogs received increasing doses of continuous infusions of a 26-amino-acid synthetic atrial natriuretic factor (ANF). Urinary sodium excretion rose in a dose-dependent manner to a maximum level similar to that seen after hydrochlorothiazide administration. Mean arterial blood pressure decreased, but only modestly, and not in a dose-dependent fashion. Dogs chronically retaining NaCl secondary to constriction of the thoracic inferior vena cava showed only modestly enhanced natriuresis when infused with similar levels of ANF. When ANF was infused directly into the renal artery of anesthetized beagles, a dose-dependent natriuresis and calciuresis were observed with maximal fractional sodium excretion averaging approximately 8%. Although glomerular filtration tended to increase, the average dose-related changes were not significant. Cyclic GMP excretion was increased during intra-renal-arterial infusion of ANF. Excretion of cyclic GMP by both the infused and noninfused kidneys was equal, which suggests that urinary cyclic GMP was not nephrogenous but derived from the elevated circulating levels. These and other data from rats dissociate changes in urinary cyclic GMP excretion and sodium excretion.  相似文献

The metabolism of the Mollicutes Acholeplasma and Mycoplasma may be characterized as restricted, for example, by virtue of the apparent absence of cytochrome pigments. Some Mollicutes have lowered ECA values during their logarithmic growth phase, which we speculate may be related to insufficient substrate phosphorylation or insufficient ATP synthesis linked to glycolysis. We found that PEP is carboxylated by preparations of A. laidlawii, but not by other Mollicutes; thus in this organism oxaloacetate from PEP may be a link to other pathways. We found phosphoribosylpyrophosphate in A. laidlawii, which suggests that ribosylation of purines and pyrimidines occurs in Mollicutes other than M. mycoides.  相似文献
