The detection of the cholesterol of the erythrocyte plasmalemma by using a latex marker]

Using a new specific cholesterol marker (SCM) and scanning electron microscopy, the distribution of cholesterol in the plasmalemma of rabbit and human erythrocytes was studied. Investigation of SCM linking with the erythrocyte membranes with different cholesterol/phospholipid indices shows that the increase of cholesterol/phospholipid index of the erythrocyte membrane correlates with the increase in the number of SCM particles on the erythrocyte surface.     

Tissue interactions of regenerating muscle tissue with skeletal muscle under the effect of ionizing radiation

The effect of the muscle tissue, ground into a fine chyme, to restoration of the m. gastrocnemius ability to posttraumatic regeneration after x-ray radiation in the doses 20--30 Gy, has been studied in 64 non-inbred white male rats with the body mass about 200 g. The ground muscle is a viscous mass, consisting of finest scraps of muscle fibers, pieces of sarcolemmal tubules with 2--3 nuclei and separate cells. The great destruction of the muscle stroma relieves metabolites to get out and to diffuse. As demonstrate the histological investigations carried out for 1 month, an essential part of the muscle autotransplant, put into the irradiated extremity, regenerates up to formation of differentiated muscle fibers and promotes to restore the regenerative activity in the irradiated m. gastrocnemius.     

Decrease in the stress reaction and the ulcerative lesions of the stomach under the influence of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid

The effect of preliminary Na gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHBA) injection on the activation of adrenergic and hypophyseal-adrenal systems during emotional-painful stress and ulcerous affection of the stomach after the stress cessation was studied in experiments on rats. It was established that the preliminary GHBA administration inhibits stimulation of stress causing systems and thereby prevents ulcerous affection of the stomach mucosa. It is suggested that the activation of GHBA-ergic inhibiting system, which accompanies the stress, is a natural mechanism of limitation of the stress reaction and prevention of the stress affections.     

Species of the genus Papio (Cercopithecidae, primates) as subjects of biomedical research: II. Quantitative characteristics of contemporary use of baboon species in medical and biological investigations

Independence of the five Papio species is evaluated. Baboons appear to be more similar to man than are other monkey species, which makes them a desirable model for use in experimental research to approximate human health conditions. They are, however, used less widely than macaques. Publications on baboons account for 10.3% of literature on the use of primates in experimental research. Baboons were most intensively used in surgery, then in hematology, cardiology, endocrinology. They were most rarely used in stomatology and in studies on infectious diseases.     

Neurite growth and formation of connections in pteropodial mollusk neurons in culture

Neurons from the peripharyngeal nerve ring detached from the pteropodial molluskClione limacina were cultured in polylysine prepared in a 25% Leibovitz saltwater medium containing 2% embryonic calf serum. Neurite outgrowth was observed in a proportion of the neurons, reaching its peak rate during the first three days. Neurites grew up to 300 µm in length. Membrane potential of the neurons measured 40–60 mV. The latter generated either single action potentials or volleys of spikes. Neural connections between 70 pairs of cells with overlapping neurites were investigated on days 3–4. An electrical connection was discovered between cells in 20% of the pairs examined and, in 6%, stimulating one neuron of a pair produced an inhibitory postsynaptic potential in the other.Institute of Information Transmission Research, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow.
