Understanding the local and regional patterns of species distributions has been a major goal of ecological and evolutionary research. The notion that these patterns can be understood through simple quantitative rules is attractive, but while numerous scaling laws exist (e.g., metabolic, fractals), we are aware of no studies that have placed individual traits and community structure together within a genetics based scaling framework. We document the potential for a genetic basis to the scaling of ecological communities, largely based upon our long-term studies of poplars (Populus spp.). The genetic structure and diversity of these foundation species affects riparian ecosystems and determines a much larger community of dependent organisms. Three examples illustrate these ideas. First, there is a strong genetic basis to phytochemistry and tree architecture (both above- and belowground), which can affect diverse organisms and ecosystem processes. Second, empirical studies in the wild show that the local patterns of genetics based community structure scale up to western North America. At multiple spatial scales the arthropod community phenotype is related to the genetic distance among plants that these arthropods depend upon for survival. Third, we suggest that the familiar species-area curve, in which species richness is a function of area, is also a function of genetic diversity. We find that arthropod species richness is closely correlated with the genetic marker diversity and trait variance suggesting a genetic component to these curves. Finally, we discuss how genetic variation can interact with environmental variation to affect community attributes across geographic scales along with conservation implications. 相似文献

We analysed the number of autumn migrants at a bird ringing station over 41 years in the Jura mountains of Switzerland. For
12 irruptive or potentially irruptive bird species, the correlations between their numbers per year were calculated and the
species were clustered accordingly. We found high correlations in the number of migrants between the Coal Tit Periparus ater, Great Tit Parus major and Blue Tit Cyanistes caeruleus. Most correlations of passage number between species pairs changed dramatically over time. Only Blue Tit and Coal Tit showed
continuously high correlation in this respect. The variation and changes over time in between-species correlations in the

Leaf senescence and nitrogen remobilization from senescing tissues are two important factors determining grain protein content (GPC) in cereals. We compared near-isogenic barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) germplasm varying in the allelic state of a major GPC quantitative trait locus on chromosome 6, delineated by molecular markers HVM74 and ABG458 and explaining approximately 46% of the variability in this trait. High GPC was consistently associated with earlier whole-plant senescence. SDS–PAGE and immunoblot analysis of flag leaf proteins indicated earlier leaf protein [including ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco)] degradation in high-GPC germplasm. This was accompanied by enhanced availability of ammonium and glutamine in developing kernels, suggesting increased phloem retranslocation of nitrogen. Based on previous microarray analysis, we performed a detailed expression study of six leaf genes, tentatively involved in plastidial proteolysis, vacuolar proteolysis, intermediary N metabolism and N transport. All of these were upregulated in high-GPC barley, mostly around 21 to 28 days past anthesis, prior to or around the time demonstrating maximal differences in leaf protein (including Rubisco) levels. Therefore, these genes represent potential targets to manipulate grain protein accumulation. It appears likely that their functional analysis will enhance our understanding of whole-plant N recycling. Additionally, earlier leaf (photosynthetic) protein degradation may lead to reduced N carbon assimilation in high-GPC germplasm, explaining past studies demonstrating a negative correlation between GPC and yield. 相似文献

Recent studies have shown that calcium ions can also regulate the cellular responses to ionizing radiation. However, previous data are restricted to cells treated with low-LET radiations (X rays, gamma rays and beta particles). In this work, we investigated the calcium levels in cells exposed to heavy-ion radiation of high LET. The experiments were performed at the single ion hit facility of the GSI heavy-ion microprobe. Using a built-in online calcium imaging system, the intracellular calcium concentrations were examined in HeLa cells and human foreskin fibroblast AG1522-D cells before and after irradiation with 4.8 MeV/nucleon carbon or argon ions. Although the experiment was sensitive enough to detect the calcium response to other known stimuli, no response to heavy-ion radiation was found in these two cell types. We also found that heavy-ion radiation has no impact on calcium oscillation induced by hypoxia stress in fibroblast cells. 相似文献

Genetic variation was shown earlier to bereduced in smaller populations of the narrowendemic putatively self-incompatible Cochlearia bavarica. To test whether thisnegatively affects plant fitness by reducedavailability of compatible mates and byinbreeding depression, we studied effects ofpopulation size and pollination treatments oncross-compatibility and offspring fitness in 16isolated populations of this plant. After openpollination, compatibility of crosses (i.e.,whether at least one fruit developed per markedflower), fruit set of compatible crosses, andcumulative fitness (number of plants permaternal ovule) after 14 months in a commongarden were lower for plants from smallerpopulations. Throughout the study, cumulativefitness was lower after hand pollination withpollen of one donor than after open pollination(finally 73.4% lower), suggesting that severalpollen donors or single pollen donors of higherquality are involved in open pollination.Moreover, cumulative fitness was lower afterhand selfing than after hand outcrossing(finally 69.4% lower), indicating bothinbreeding depression and reduced compatibilityafter selfing. High self-compatibility(40.6%), dry stigmas, and differences in thecompatibility of 11 of 33 experimentalreciprocal crosses between plant pairsconfirmed that C. bavarica has asporophytic self-incompatibility system, as iscommon in the Brassicaceae. Our studydemonstrates, that plants in smallerpopulations of species with a sporophyticself-incompatibility system can experiencetwofold fitness reductions associated withreduced genetic variability, i.e., twofoldgenetic Allee effects: via reducedcross-compatibility and via reduced offspringfitness. 相似文献

In Lake Constance, Eurasian bream Abramis brama (L.) spawn in very shallow littoral areas by the beginning of May. They attach their adhesive eggs to pebble and cobble substratum
at <40 cm depth. Increasing water levels before spawning inundate bare substratum to which bream eggs may attach better than
to deeper substratum covered by epilithon. Consequently, the water level increase prior to spawning should determine the amount
of pristine spawning substratum available to bream and thus influence their breeding success. In order to test this hypothesis,
the influence of hydrology and climate on the abundance of age-0 bream was combined with the results from field investigations
on the egg survival and abundance of age-0 bream. A strong positive correlation between the mean water level increase during
the spawning season of bream (April–May) and the abundance of juvenile bream was found. In contrast, the absolute water level
during spawning and during the nursery stage in summer, the cumulative temperature during the egg, larval and juvenile stages
and two North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) indices did not affect the abundance of juvenile bream. The field investigations
confirmed that bream eggs attach better to and have higher survival rates on bare substratum than on substratum with epilithon
cover. Accordingly, eggs within a spawning habitat of bream were most abundant between 10 and 20 cm depth, where the epilithon
cover was lower than at depths exceeding 30 cm. The results of this study confirm an adverse influence of epilithon cover
on the attachment and subsequent survival of bream eggs and emphasize the importance of spring inundations for the successful
breeding of the bream.

The immune attack against malignant tumors require the concerted action of CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) as well as CD4+ T helper cells. The contribution of T cell receptor (TCR) αβ+ CD4− CD8− double-negative (DN) T cells to anti-tumor immune responses is widely unknown. In previous studies, we have demonstrated
that DN T cells with a broad TCR repertoire are present in humans in the peripheral blood and the lymph nodes of healthy individuals.
Here, we characterize a human DN T cell clone (T4H2) recognizing an HLA-A2-restricted melanoma-associated antigenic gp100-peptide
isolated from the peripheral blood of a melanoma patient. Antigen recognition by the T4H2 DN clone resulted in specific secretion
of IFN-γ and TNF. Although lacking the CD8 molecule the gp100-specifc DN T cell clone was able to confer antigen-specific
cytotoxicity against gp100-loaded target cells as well as HLA-A2+ gp100 expressing melanoma cells. The cytotoxic capacity was found to be perforin/granzymeB-dependent. Together, these data
indicate that functionally active antigen-specific DN T cells recognizing MHC class I-restricted tumor-associated antigen
(TAA) may contribute to anti-tumor immunity in vivo.

Clinical–chemical traits are diagnostic parameters essential for characterization of health and disease in veterinary practice. The traits show significant variability and are under genetic control, but little is known about the fundamental genetic architecture of this variability, especially in swine. We have identified QTL for alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate (LAC), bilirubin (BIL), creatinine (CRE) and ionized sodium (Na+ ), potassium (K+ ) and calcium (Ca++ ) from the serum of 139 F2 pigs from a Meishan/Pietrain family before and after challenge with Sarcocystis miescheriana , a protozoan parasite of muscle. After infection, the pigs passed through three stages representing acute disease, subclinical disease and chronic disease. Forty-two QTL influencing clinical–chemical traits during these different stages were identified on 15 chromosomes. Eleven of the QTL were significant on a genome-wide level; 31 QTL were chromosome-wide significant. QTL showed specific health/disease patterns with respect to the baseline values of the traits as well as the values obtained through the different stages of disease. QTL influencing different traits at different times were found primarily on chromosomes 1, 3, 7 and 14. The most prominent QTL for the investigated clinical–chemical traits mapped to SSC3 and 7. Baseline traits of ALP, LAC, BIL, Ca++ and K+ were influenced by QTL regions on SSC3, 6, 7, 8 and 13. Single QTL explained up to 21.7% of F2 phenotypic variance. Our analysis confirms that variation of clinical–chemical traits is associated with multiple chromosomal regions. 相似文献
