Recent mathematical indices summarizing biological communities of indicators are recapitulated. Improvements of these indices based on weighting according to width of trophic ranges of each species are suggested. Their principle deficiencies, however, are pointed out.
Revised lists of characteristic profundal as well as littoral and sublittoral chironomids in Nearctic and Palearctic lakes show that at least 15 characteristic chironomid species communities can be delineated, 6 in each of the oligotrophic and the eutrophic ranges and 3 in the mesotrophic range. It is proposed that these communities be lettered consecutively in the Greek alphabet from α (alpha) to o (omikron). A key to the 15 divisions based on the species associations in the profundal zone of harmonic lakes is put forward. There is very good correlation between the 15 divisions and the ratios of average total phosphorus to mean lake depth and average chlorophyll a to mean lake depth.
The ratio of chironomids to oligochaetes and the distribution patterns of single species have proven useful in pin-pointing localized areas of pollution. The primary mechanism governing the distribution of chironomid communities in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes appears to be the availability of food materials rather than the annual hypolimnetic oxygen concentration. In eutrophic lakes the relationships between organic matter accumulation and oxygen levels are so interdependent as to be inseparable. 相似文献

Uptake of orthophosphate and deposition of condensed phosphate were investigated in cells of Synechococcus sp. (Anacystis nidulans) deficient in phosphorus or sulfur. When phosphorus was restored to phosphorus-starved cells, uptake was rapid and immediate, with the greatest accumulation occurring within the first hour. Uptake was optimum in the pH 7.5–8.5 range. Long-term (6-day) studies of uptake and deposition with cells exposed to a wide range of sulfur deficiency showed that both processes were greatest when the level of exogenous sulfur was reduced to zero. The increase in cellular phosphorus as determined chemically was in agreement with the increased number and size of polyphosphate bodies at the ultrastructural level. Possible mechanisms for the control of phosphorus uptake and condensed phosphate formation by exogenous sulfur are discussed. 相似文献

Structures of mitochondrial bc1 complex have been reported based on four different crystal forms by three different groups. In these structures, the extrinsic domain of the Rieske [2Fe-2S] protein, surprisingly, appeared at three different positions: the "c1" position, where the [2Fe-2S] cluster exists in close proximity to the heme c1; the "b" position, where the [2Fe-2S] cluster exist in close proximity to the cytochrome b; and the "intermediate" position where the [2Fe-2S] cluster exists in-between "c1" and "b" positions. The conformational changes between these three positions can be explained by a combination of two rotations; (1) a rotation of the entire extrinsic domain and (2) a relative rotation between the cluster-binding fold and the base fold within the extrinsic domain. The hydroquinone oxidation and the electron bifurcation mechanism at the Q(P) binding pocket of the bc1 complex is well explained using these conformational changes of the Rieske [2Fe-2S] protein. 相似文献

HIV infection can be effectively controlled by anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in most patients. However therapy must be continued for life, because interruption of ART leads to rapid recrudescence of infection from long-lived latently infected cells. A number of approaches are currently being developed to ‘purge’ the reservoir of latently infected cells in order to either eliminate infection completely, or significantly delay the time to viral recrudescence after therapy interruption. A fundamental question in HIV research is how frequently the virus reactivates from latency, and thus how much the reservoir might need to be reduced to produce a prolonged antiretroviral-free HIV remission. Here we provide the first direct estimates of the frequency of viral recrudescence after ART interruption, combining data from four independent cohorts of patients undergoing treatment interruption, comprising 100 patients in total. We estimate that viral replication is initiated on average once every ≈6 days (range 5.1- 7.6 days). This rate is around 24 times lower than previous thought, and is very similar across the cohorts. In addition, we analyse data on the ratios of different ‘reactivation founder’ viruses in a separate cohort of patients undergoing ART-interruption, and estimate the frequency of successful reactivation to be once every 3.6 days. This suggests that a reduction in the reservoir size of around 50-70-fold would be required to increase the average time-to-recrudescence to about one year, and thus achieve at least a short period of anti-retroviral free HIV remission. Our analyses suggests that time-to-recrudescence studies will need to be large in order to detect modest changes in the reservoir, and that macaque models of SIV latency may have much higher frequencies of viral recrudescence after ART interruption than seen in human HIV infection. Understanding the mean frequency of recrudescence from latency is an important first step in approaches to prolong antiretroviral-free viral remission in HIV. 相似文献

Summary The present paper reports the isolation of an obligate phototrophic bacterium which belongs to the Rhodospirillum fulvum-group on the basis of its colour, morphology, nutritional requirements and strictly anaerobic nature. p-Aminobenzoic acid was shown to be the only growth factor required.
Rhsp. fulvum synthesizes bacteriochlorophyll a as its only chlorophyllous pigments. The carotenoid composition comprises lycopene (I) and rhodopin (II) as the major components; traces of 1,2,1,2-tetrahydro-1,1-dihydroxy-lycopene (III) were also present.
Zusammenfassung Es wird die Isolierung eines obligat phototrophen Bakteriums beschrieben, welches auf Grund seiner Farbe, Morphologie, Nährstoff-Bedürfnisse und streng anaeroben Lebensweise in die Rhodospirillum fulvum-Gruppe eingeordnet wird. Als einzigen Wachstumsfaktor benötigt der Stamm p-Aminobenzoesäure. Rhsp. fulvum bildet Bacteriochlorophyll a als einzigen chlorophyllartigen Farbstoff. The effects of growth hormone (GH) implants on aggression, and ability to win dyadic territorial conflicts were studied in brown trout Salmo trutta parr. Bovine GH or vehicle (C) was given to either the territory owner or the intruder in four treatment combinations: C and C, C and GH, GH and C, GH and GH (owner and intruder). GH‐treated intruders initiated significantly more conflicts compared to control intruders. Furthermore, GH treatment of either the owner or intruder tended to increase aggression of the intruder. This indicates that intruders have more scope for motivational increase, while the motivation of owners is already at a maximum. The GH treatment, however, did not affect the outcome of the conflict. It thus appears that growth enhancement increases intruder aggression without increasing the chance of winning the conflict, which may have implications for the effect of growth‐selected or growth‐enhanced farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar on wild populations. 相似文献
