Deoxyribonucleic Acid Polymerase of Rous Sarcoma Virus: Studies on the Mechanism of Double-Stranded Deoxyribonucleic Acid Synthesis

The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) polymerase of Rous sarcoma virus synthesizes both single- and double-stranded DNA, utilizing the ribonucleic acid (RNA) of the viral genome as the initial template. Results of pulse-chase experiments indicate that the single-stranded DNA serves as unconserved template and precursor for the synthesis of double-stranded DNA. The latter reaction is apparently initiated in association with the viral RNA and may involve a partially double-stranded intermediate form.     

An ultraviolet photoreceptor in a Dipteran compound eye

Summary Intracellular recordings of the retinula cell receptor potential to flashes of monochromatic light demonstrate the presence of ultraviolet photoreceptors in the retina of the honeybee-mimic dronefly (Diptera, Syrphidae,Eristalis). Photoreceptors for visible light were also found. Hence, the dronefly has the neural capability for color vision. This is consistent with behavioral studies. Color vision would aid this animal in its natural habit of forraging with the honeybee.Supported by grants AFOSR-71-2112 and NSF GB-30733.     

Structural studies on the specific capsular polysaccharide from Rhizobium trifolii, TA-1

The repeating unit of the specific capsular polysaccharide from the bacterium Rhizobium trifolii (TA)-1 has been shown to contain (a) terminal 4,6-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)-D-galactose (1 residue), (b) (1 → 3)-linked 4,6-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)-D-glucose (1 residue), (c) (1 → 4)-(1 → 6)-linked D-glucose (1 residue), (d) (1 → 4)-linked D-glucuronic acid (1 residue), and (e) (1 → 4)-linked D-glucose (4 residues). The pyruvylated sugars were shown to be positioned sequentially, and at least one other unit was interposed between them and the branch point.     

Inhibition of photosynthetic electron transfer by amphotericin B

The polyene antibiotic amphotericin B inhibits photosynthetic electron transfer by Class II maize mesophyll chloroplasts, from water to FeCN, DCIP and diquat but not to plastocyanin. Photosystem 1 activity is also inhibited by amphotericin B, but ferredoxin-NADP reductase activity is not affected. The activity of all the photosynthetic electron transfer systems inhibited by amphotericin B can be restored by the addition of carrier amounts of plastocyanin. The results suggest that amphotericin B inhibits photosynthetic electron transfer by acting only at the plastocyanin site in the chain, and that the primary site of reduction of FeCN and DCIP from water by Class II chloroplasts lies on the reducing side of photosystem 1.
