3 alpha OH-5 alpha-Pregnan-20-one (allo-THP), a steroid with strong anaesthetic properties, was found to be secreted by the adrenal gland of the rat in quantities similar to those secreted by the rat ovary. From the hypnotic potencies established for this and other endogenous steroids there can be little doubt that the total amount of steroids with anaesthetic properties produced in a female rat are sufficient to exert a depressant action on certain cells of the brain. In rats with intact adrenal glands a positive correlation existed between the adrenal secretion of allo-THP and pregnenolone or progesterone, whereas that between allo-THP and DOC was negative. This could be the result of a competition between the enzymes responsible for the oxidation and reduction of progesterone, the common precursor of allo-THP and DOC. The possibility that allo-THP could have hypotensive actions was suggested. 相似文献

Comparing geographic variation of noncoding nuclear DNA polymorphisms,
which presumably are neutral to natural selection, with geographic
variation of allozymes is potentially a good way to detect the effects of
selection on allozyme polymorphisms. A previous study of four anonymous
nuclear markers in the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, found
dramatic differences in allele frequency between the Gulf of Mexico and the
Atlantic Ocean. In contrast, 14 allozyme polymorphisms were fairly uniform
in frequency between the two areas. This led to the conclusion that all of
the allozyme polymorphisms were kept uniform in frequency by balancing
selection. To test the robustness of this pattern, six additional anonymous
nuclear DNA polymorphisms were surveyed in oysters from Panacea, Fla, and
Charleston, S.C. on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, respectively. Unlike the
previously studied DNA markers, the six DNA polymorphisms examined here
show geographic variation that is not significantly greater than that of
allozymes. The reason for the discrepancy between the two sets of DNA
polymorphisms is unclear.

Summary Fungal biotechnology has generated a voluminous amount of technical literature and scientific data. Patents probably contain the most complete and detailed information about the use of fungal cultures in biotechnology. This article contains a brief review of the United States patent system where microorganisms form an integral part of the disclosure and explains the role of the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) as a patent culture depository. A list based on the application of the ATCC fungal strains which have been cited or used in US patents and the names of the inventors, the titles of the inventions, and their patent numbers are included. OBJECTIVE: To define the prevalence of mental disorder and need for psychiatric treatment in new remand prisoners and to determine to what extent these are recognised and addressed in prison. DESIGN: Study of consecutive male remand prisoners at reception using a semistructured psychiatric interview. SETTING: Large remand prison for men (HMP Durham). SUBJECTS: 669 men aged 21 years and over on remand, awaiting trial. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prevalence of mental disorder at reception, prisoners need for psychiatric treatment, identification of mental disorder by prison reception screening, and numbers placed appropriately in the prison hospital. RESULTS: 148 (26%) men had one or more current mental disorders (excluding substance misuse) including 24 who were acutely psychotic. The prison reception screening identified 34 of the men with mental disorder and six of those with acute psychosis. 168 men required psychiatric treatment, 50 of whom required urgent intervention; 16 required immediate transfer to psychiatric hospital. Of these 50, 17 were placed on the hospital wing because of mental disorder recognised at prison screening. CONCLUSION: Not only is the prevalence of mental disorder, in particular severe mental illness, high in this population, but the numbers identified at reception are low and subsequent management in prison is poor. 相似文献

The rates of true and apparent photosynthesis of two unicellular green algae, one diatom and four blue-green algae were measured in buffer at pH 8.0 at subsaturating concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon (13-27 micromolar). Initial rates of depletion from the medium of inorganic carbon and 14C activity caused by the algae in a closed system were measured by gas chromatography and by liquid scintillation counting, respectively. The rate of photorespiration was calculated as the difference between the rates of apparent and true photosynthesis. The three eucaryotic algae and two blue-green algae had photorespiratory rates of 10 to 28% that of true photosynthesis at air levels of O2. Reduction of the O2 level to 2% caused a 52 to 91% reduction in photorespiratory rate. Two other blue-green algae displayed low photorespiratory rates, 2.4 to 6.2% that of true photosynthesis at air levels of O2, and reduction of the O2 concentration had no effect on these rates. 相似文献

Multiple sequence alignments are powerful tools for understanding the structures, functions, and evolutionary histories of linear biological macromolecules (DNA, RNA, and proteins), and for finding homologs in sequence databases. We address several ontological issues related to RNA sequence alignments that are informed by structure. Multiple sequence alignments are usually shown as two-dimensional (2D) matrices, with rows representing individual sequences, and columns identifying nucleotides from different sequences that correspond structurally, functionally, and/or evolutionarily. However, the requirement that sequences and structures correspond nucleotide-by-nucleotide is unrealistic and hinders representation of important biological relationships. High-throughput sequencing efforts are also rapidly making 2D alignments unmanageable because of vertical and horizontal expansion as more sequences are added. Solving the shortcomings of traditional RNA sequence alignments requires explicit annotation of the meaning of each relationship within the alignment. We introduce the notion of “correspondence,” which is an equivalence relation between RNA elements in sets of sequences as the basis of an RNA alignment ontology. The purpose of this ontology is twofold: first, to enable the development of new representations of RNA data and of software tools that resolve the expansion problems with current RNA sequence alignments, and second, to facilitate the integration of sequence data with secondary and three-dimensional structural information, as well as other experimental information, to create simultaneously more accurate and more exploitable RNA alignments. 相似文献

Relaxins are peptides similar in secondary structure to insulins. In teleost genomes, five or six relaxin genes have been identified. Two relaxins group closely with mammalian relaxin-3 on phylogenetic analysis and are named relaxin-3a and b. We refer to the remainder as relaxins c to f. Ovarian expression of relaxin-3a, d and f genes, and the relaxin-3 receptor gene Rxfp3, was studied in Danio rerio using RT-PCR. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine the distribution of relaxin-3 peptides and RXFP3 in the ovary of Fundulus heteroclitus (killifish). Thirdly, enzyme immunoassays and ovarian follicular culture were used to determine the effect of treatment with human recombinant relaxin-3 on the production of 17beta-estradiol and 17 alpha, 20 beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one in killifish ovarian follicles. Relaxin-3a, d, f, and Rxfp3 genes were expressed regardless of sex or reproductive condition. Relaxin-3 immunostaining was present in mid to late follicular stages within cortical alveoli of the oocyte cytopasm, whereas receptor staining was localized to follicular cells. Treatment with relaxin-3 enhanced 17beta-estradiol production in early and late maturing follicles, but did not have an effect in vitellogenic follicles. Relaxin-3 appeared to suppress the release of MIS production. This suggests that relaxin peptides may be involved with estradiol-dependant events in follicular development. 相似文献
