Summary Plants of Drosera species, neighbouring noncarnivorous plants, and arthropods on or near each Drosera sp. were collected at 11 contrasting habitat locations in SW Australia. At three of the sites clones of the rare glandless mutant form of D. erythrorhiza were collected alongside fully glandular counterparts. The 15N value (15N/14N natural isotope composition) of insect-free leaf and stem fractions was measured, and the data then used to estimate proportional dependence on insect N (%NdI) for the respective species and growth forms of Drosera. The data indicated lower %NdI values for rosette than for self-supporting erect or for climbing vine species. The latter two groups showed an average %NdI value close to 50%. The %NdI increased with length and biomass of climbing but not erect forms of Drosera. 15N values of stems were positively correlated with corresponding values for leaves of Drosera. Leaf material was on average significantly more 15N enriched than stems, possibly due to delayed transport of recent insect-derived N, or to discrimination against 15N in transfer from leaf to the rest of the plant. The comparison of 15N values of insects and arthropod prey, glandless and glandular plants of D. erythrorhiza indicated %NdI values of 14.3, 12.2 and 32.2 at the respective sites, while matching comparisons based on 15N of insect, reference plants and glandular plants proved less definitive, with only one site recording a positive %NdI (value of 10.4%) despite evidence at all sites of feeding on insects by the glandular plants. The use of the 15N technique for studying nutrition of carnivorous species and the ecological significance of insect feeding of different growth forms of Drosera growing in a large range of habitats is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The viralsrc gene downregulates junctional communication, closing cell-to-cell membrane channels presumably by way of the phosphoinositide signal route. We show that TMB-8 [8-N, N-(diethylamino) octyl-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoate] counteracts this downregulation in cells transformed by temperature-sensitive mutant Rous sarcoma virus: TMB-8 (36–72 m) raises junctional permeability when applied during activity ofsrc protein kinase, i.e., at steady permissive temperature; and TMB-8 inhibits the fall of junctional permeability, when the activity ofsrc protein kinase gets turned on. TMB-8 also (reversibly) inhibits the growth of the cells at permissive temperature and reverses the morphological changes associated with transformation. The morphological reversal lags several hours behind the junctional-permeability reversal. Communication recovers within a few minutes when the activity of thesrc protein kinase is turned off (in absence of TMB-8). Sodium orthovanadate (20 m) prevents this recovery, but it has no major effect on junctional permeability on its own. We discuss possible modes of action of these agents on critical stages of the signal route, related to intracellular Ca2+ and protein kinase C.  相似文献

Summary Growth and nitrogen partitioning were investigated in the biennial monocarp Arctium tomentosum in the field, in plants growing at natural light conditions, in plants in which approximately half the leaf area was removed and in plants growing under 20% of incident irradiation. Growth quantities were derived from splined cubic polynomial exponential functions fitted to dry matter, leaf area and nitrogen data.Main emphasis was made to understanding of the significance of carbohydrate and nitrogen storage of a large tuber during a 2-years' life cycle, especially the effect of storage on biomass and seed yield in the second season. Biomass partitioning favours growth of leaves in the first year rosette stage. Roots store carbohydrates at a constant rate and increase storage of carbohydrates and nitrogen when the leaves decay at the end of the first season. In the second season the reallocation of carbohydrates from storage is relatively small, but reallocation of nitrogen is very large. Carbohydrate storage just primes the growth of the first leaves in the early growing season, nitrogen storage contributes 20% to the total nitrogen requirement during the 2nd season. The efficiency of carbohydrate storage for conversion into new biomass is about 40%. Nitrogen is reallocated 3 times in the second year, namely from the tuber to rosette leaves and further to flower stem leaves and eventually into seeds. The harvest index for nitrogen is 0.73, whereas for biomass it is only 0.19.  相似文献

The development of electron-dense microbodies in cells of capture organs of the nematophagous fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora was studied with different ultrastructural techniques. Kinetic experiments revealed that the synthesis of these microbodies started in a very early stage of trap formation; the organelles originated from special regions of endoplasmic reticulum by budding. Mature organelles were surrounded by a single membrane of approximately 9 nm (KMnO4-fixation) and lacked crystalline inclusions. The presence of the electron-dense microbodies was independent of the conditions during which the traps had developed. The organelles remained intact during aging of the trap cells. They were also observed in the trophic hyphae after capture and penetration of nematodes. However, the distribution patterns of these organelles in the trophic hyphae, which were identical to those observed after germination of isolated traps on different cultivation media, suggested that their presence must be explained by dilution of organelles in newly formed cells.  相似文献

Summary Leaf gas exchange, transpiration, water potential and xylem water flow measurements were used in order to investigate the daily water balance of intact, naturally growing, adult Larix and Picea trees without major injury. The total daily water use of the tree was very similar when measured as xylem water flow at breast height or at the trunk top below the shade branches, or as canopy transpiration by a porometer or gas exchange chamber at different crown positions. The average canopy transpiration is about 12% lower than the transpiration of a single twig in the sun crown of Larix and Picea. Despite the similarity in daily total water flows there are larger differences in the actual daily course. Transpiration started 2 to 3 h earlier than the xylem water flow and decreased at noon before the maximum xylem water flow was reached, and stopped in the evening 2 to 3 h earlier than the water flow though the stem. The daily course of the xylem water flow was very similar at the trunk base and top below the lowest branches with shade needles. The difference in water efflux from the crown via transpiration and the water influx from the trunk is caused by the use of stored water. The specific capacitance of the crown wood was estimated to be 4.7 x 10-8 and 6.3 x 10-8 kg kg-1 Pa-1 and the total amount of available water storage was 17.8 and 8.7 kg, which is 24% and 14% of the total daily transpiration in Larix and Picea respectively. Very little water was used from the main tree trunk. With increasing transpiration and use of stored water from wood in the crown, the water potential in the foliage decreases. Plant water status recovers with the decrease of transpiration and the refilling of the water storage sites. The liquid flow conductance in the trunk was 0.45 x 10-9 and 0.36 x 10-9 mol m-2s-1 Pa-1 in Larix and Picea respectively. The role of stomata and their control by environmental and internal plant factors is discussed.  相似文献

Free sterols and sterylglycosides (SG) from oat leaves and seedswere isolated by conventional thin layer chromatography (TLC)and subjected to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)for resolution of molecular species. Acylsterylglycosides, isolatedby TLC, were converted to SG by mild alkaline hydrolysis anddetermined as SG. Sterols and SG were injected onto the columnwithout any chemical treatment and the separated species weredetected at 200 nm. The separation of SG-species follows exactlythe separation of free sterols. Though gas liquid chromatography still is the method of choice, advantages of HPLC is to analyse directly the SG-species withouthydrolysis and derivatization as compared to GLC. After TLCthe sterol- and the SG-fraction are injected directly onto thecolumn. This is extremely important for labile sterylglycosidesor sterols, as demonstrated for the avenasterols. 1 Preliminary reports have been presented on the "4. A new guillotine thermocouple psychrometer was used to make continuous measurements of water potential before and after the excision of elongating and mature regions of darkgrown soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) stems. Transpiration could not occur, but growth took place during the measurement if the tissue was intact. Tests showed that the instrument measured the average water potential of the sampled tissue and responded rapidly to changes in water potential. By measuring tissue osmotic potential ( s ), turgor pressure ( p ) could be calculated. In the intact plant, s and p were essentially constant for the entire 22 h measurement, but s was lower and p higher in the elongating region than in the mature region. This caused the water potential in the elongating region to be lower than in the mature region. The mature tissue equilibrated with the water potential of the xylem. Therefore, the difference in water potential between mature and elongating tissue represented a difference between the xylem and the elongating region, reflecting a water potential gradient from the xylem to the epidermis that was involved in supplying water for elongation. When mature tissue was excised with the guillotine, s and p did not change. However, when elongating tissue was excised, water was absorbed from the xylem, whose water potential decreased. This collapsed the gradient and prevented further water uptake. Tissue p then decreased rapidly (5 min) by about 0.1 MPa in the elongating tissue. The p decreased because the cell walls relaxed as extension, caused by p , continued briefly without water uptake. The p decreased until the minimum for wall extension (Y) was reached, whereupon elongation ceased. This was followed by a slow further decrease in Y but no additional elongation. In elongating tissue excised with mature tissue attached, there was almost no effect on water potential or p for several hours. Nevertheless, growth was reduced immediately and continued at a decreasing rate. In this case, the mature tissue supplied water to the elongating tissue and the cell walls did not relax. Based on these measurements, a theory is presented for simultaneously evaluating the effects of water supply and water demand associated with growth. Because wall relaxation measured with the psychrometer provided a new method for determining Y and wall extensibility, all the factors required by the theory could be evaluated for the first time in a single sample. The analysis showed that water uptake and wall extension co-limited elongation in soybean stems under our conditions. This co-limitation explains why elongation responded immediately to a decrease in the water potential of the xylem and why excision with attached mature tissue caused an immediate decrease in growth rate without an immediate change in p Abbreviations and symbols L tissue conductance for water - m wall extensibility - Y average yield threshold (MPa) - o water potential of the xylem - p turgor pressure - s osmotic potential - w water potential of the elon gating tissue  相似文献

Hyperia galba Montagu is associated with gelatinous zooplankton as are many species of the Hyperiidea. The hosts preferred in the European seas are the large scyphomedusaeAurelia aurita, Chrysaora hysoscella, Rhizostoma pulmo, Cyanea capillata andCyanea lamarckii, which harbour the first developmental stages. The anamorphic development produces young that are incapable of swimming at the time of hatching. They are characterized by an embryonic abdomen without extremities and external segmentation; the eyes are not completely developed and the mouth is primitive lacking bristles, molar and incisor. The postembryonic development, described in detail, is subdivided into two phases: the pantochelis phase and the protopleon phase; the former comprises only one stage; the latter can be subdivided into four stages. In the course of postnatal development the larval organs are reduced and characters typical of the adult are gradually differentiated.H. galba plays an important role as obligatory endoparasite of scyphomedusae at least during the first stages of development; without a host this amphipod cannot survive, neither benthically nor in the plankton. The transition from life in the female's marsupium to endoparasitism in the jellyfish generally occurs during stage of the postembryonic development which is the first stage of the protopleon phase. The specific adaptations of its reproductive biology to a parasitic mode of life such as moult inhibition under starvation, development of larval organs and the behavioural patterns of the females as well as the young are described. Further, the influence of external factors such as temperature and food supply on the course of development is examined. Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H. Mergner on the occasion of his 70th birthday.  相似文献

Summary With the use of a digital image-processing method three-dimensional reconstructions of the arrangement of spermatocytes in human seminiferous tubules were performed. With this method it was possible to investigate the cellular distribution in the tubule in nearly any given perspective and projection. In addition, by means of simple mathematical procedures, such as by transformation of Cartesian coordinates into cylindrical coordinates, it was possible to vary the shape of a reconstruction, i.e., to convert the cylindrical image of a tubular portion into a right-angled r--z-representation.The present work not only confirms the existence of a complex helical plan of organization of the human seminiferous epithelium but also provides further aspects of the phenomenon of physiological germ-cell loss and its integration into the kinetics of spermatogenesis.Dedicated to Prof. E.C.
