Intact tropical forests are generally considered to be resistant to invasions by exotic species, although the shrub Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae) is highly invasive in tropical forests outside its native range. Release from natural enemies (e.g., herbivores and pathogens) contributes to C. hirta invasion success where native melastomes are absent, and here we examine the role of enemies when C. hirta co-occurs with native Melastomataceae species and associated herbivores and pathogens. We study 21 forest sites within agricultural landscapes in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, recording herbivory rates in C. hirta and related native Melastoma spp. plants along two 100-m transects per site that varied in canopy cover. Overall, we found evidence of enemy release; C. hirta had significantly lower herbivory (median occurrence of herbivory per plant = 79% of leaves per plant; median intensity of herbivory per leaf = 6% of leaf area) than native melastomes (93% and 20%, respectively). Herbivory on C. hirta increased when closer to native Melastoma plants with high herbivory damage, and in more shaded locations, and was associated with fewer reproductive organs on C. hirta. This suggests host-sharing by specialist Melastomataceae herbivores is occurring and may explain why invasion success of C. hirta is lower on Borneo than at locations without related native species present. Thus, natural enemy populations may provide a “biological control service” to suppress invasions of exotic species (i.e., biotic resistance). However, lower herbivory pressures in more open canopy locations may make highly degraded forests within these landscapes more susceptible to invasion.  相似文献

在主动脉与肾动脉缩窄造成的慢性心功能不全大鼠,血浆儿茶酚胺浓度增高;心脏β-肾上腺素受体(β-AR)数量增加,其中β_1-AR及其mRNA增加,而β_2-AR及其mRNA不变;左心房异丙基肾上腺素(ISO)浓度-收缩效应曲线右移;而心肌ISO浓度-cAMP蓄积曲线无显著改变;血淋巴细胞β-AR数量显著减少.结果提示心功能不全时心脏β_1-AR数量增多,但其介导的正性变力效应反而降低,在cAMP生成以后的信号转导过程或心肌收缩成分功能存在障碍,而血淋巴细胞β-AR的改变与心脏β-AR的功能改变平行.  相似文献

The rat liver sinusoidal endothelial cell (LEC) hyaluronan (HA)receptor was previously identified using a photoaffinity HAderivative (J. BioL Chem., 267, 20451–20456, 1992). Twopolypeptides with Mr = 175,000 and 166,000, were consistentlycrosslinked, suggesting that the LEC HA receptor is an oligomer.Whether one or both subunits participate in HA binding, wasnot determined. Here we investigate the HA-subunit interactionsand the potential oligomeric nature of the LEC HA receptor.When Sephacryl-400 gel filtration chromatography was used toenrich the HA receptor, the 175 kDa polypeptide was the majorband seen by SDS-PAGE analysis. Little staining was seen at166 kDa, suggesting that the 175 kDa protein could be separatedfrom the 166 kDa protein and still retain HA-binding activity.A ligand blot assay was used to determine if each individualsubunit could bind HA. We studied the action mechanism of lycoricidinol, a plant growthinhibitor isolated from Lycoris radiata Herb. Lycoricidinolinhibited protein synthesis in mung bean hypocotyls, but notRNA synthesis. Protein synthesis in Escherichia coli was notaffected by the inhibitor. Results of in vitro translation experimentswith the wheat germ system and the E. coli system indicatedthat lycoricidinol inhibited only eukaryotic but not prokaryotictranslation. Gluconeogenesis in rat renal cortex was measured using tissue slices incubated with or without appropriate substrates. Immediately after incubation the tissue slices were snap-frozen and the content of oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) was determined. Incubation with 10 mM α-ketoglutarate or L-glutamate led to enhanced glucose production and an increase in tissue content of NAD+. Quinolinate and 3-mercaptopicolinate inhibited the rate of gluconeogenesis from L-glutamate and α-ketoglutarate respectively, and decreased the tissue levels of NAD+. The enhanced rate of gluconeogenesis was associated with an increase of NAD+ in the cytosol fraction (105 × g supernatant) but not in the particulate fraction (105 × g pellet) of renal cortex homogenate. Present results indicate that NAD+ content changes in parallel with the rate of gluconeogenesis in renal cortical tissue.  相似文献

Summary We find that diaminopimelic acid in the recipient membrane is released into the medium during bacterial matings, indicating that membrane damage was inflicted on the recipient by the donor, probably for forming a channel for DNA transfer. When the damage is extensive, as in matings with an excess of Hfr bacteria, the F- bacteria are killed (lethal zygosis). The transfer of a large amount of DNA in Hfr matings appears to enhance the killing. In analogous F+xF- (Nalr) matings, on the other hand, killing of F- bacteria does not occur unless F plasmid transfer is inhibited by a substance like nalidixic acid. The F- bacteria are killed, suggesting that F plasmids contain genes that express immunity to lethal zygosis in the recipient. For example, bacteria containing surface exclusion-deficient mutants of F plasmids, such as traS - and traT -, induce lethal zygosis in F- bacteria and are susceptible to it. Various tra - polar mutants that abolish surface exclusion are also susceptible to lethal zygosis when mated with Hfr bacteria. Kinetic experiments indicate that in F+ (wild type) x F- matings, immunity to lethal zygosis is expressed in the F- recipient within 1/4 division time, whereas a complete expression of surface exclusion requires more than 1 division time. Thus, a complete change in all receptor sites seems to be required for the expression of surface exclusion.  相似文献
