Age, growth and reproduction of the black scorpionfish, Scorpaena porcus were studied in specimens from the coast of the Sinop Peninsula (Black Sea) between March 2002 and April 2003 in order to characterize these population parameters in comparison to specimens from populations of nearby regions. A total of 1086 specimens was captured by beam trawl at the depths between 0 and 30 m. The total number of females (510) was significantly higher than that of males (373). Total length of males and females ranged between 5.7 and 23.6 cm, and 4.9 and 31.7 cm, respectively. The length–weight relationship showed a positive allometric growth. Females grew faster and reached a larger size at age than males ( L  = 111.9 cm, K  = 0.035 year−1, φ' = 2.64 for females, and L  = 74.6 cm, K  = 0.054 year−1, φ' = 2.49 for males). The age range estimated was up to 8 years for females and 5 years for males. Reproduction likely occurs between June and September. Sex ratio varied greatly with season, perhaps indicating different seasonal migratory patterns in adults of different sex. An inverse correlation between gonadosomatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) was evident during the reproduction seasons. The mean size at first sexual maturity was 17.5 cm TL for females, and 16.7 cm TL for males.  相似文献

The strength of this method resides in high resolving power of two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE), coupled with highly sensitive mass spectrometry (MS), and sequence homology search. The narrow sheath mutant of maize displays a leaf and plant stature phenotype controlled by the duplicate factor mutations narrow sheath1 and narrow sheath2. Mutant leaves fail to develop a lateral domain that includes the leaf margins. Genetic data are presented to show that the narrow sheath mutations map to duplicated chromosomal regions, reflecting an ancestral duplication of the maize genome. Genetic and cytogenetic evidence indicates that the original mutation at narrow sheath2 is associated with a chromosomal inversion on the long arm of chromosome 4. Meristematic sectors of dual aneuploidy were generated, producing plants genetically mosaic for NARROW SHEATH function. These mosaic plants exhibited characteristic half-plant phenotypes, in which leaves from one side of the plant were of nonmutant morphology and leaves from the opposite side were of narrow sheath mutant phenotype. The data suggest that the narrow sheath duplicate genes may perform ancestrally conserved, redundant functions in the development of a lateral domain in the maize leaf.  相似文献

Coumarins are a vast group of natural compounds and some of them possess antioxidant activities. The comparison of the antioxidant activity of some coumarins with various chemical molecular structure has not been investigated in previous studies. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective effect against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) -induced hepatic injury by coumarin (1,2-benzopyrone) and coumarin derivatives, esculetin (6,7-dihydroxycoumarin), scoparone (6,7-dimethoxycoumarin), and 4-methylumbelliferone (7-hyroxy-4-methyl) in male Sprague–Dawley rats. Product of lipid peroxidation, malondialdehyde (MDA), activities of antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) were evaluated for oxidative stress in hepatic injury. Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were detected in plasma as a biomarker of hepatic injury. Significantly elevated levels of MDA and lowered levels of SOD and CAT activities were observed in liver of rats exposed to CCl4, when compared to control values. Similarly, administration of CCl4 increased LDH and GGT levels in serum. Pre-treatment of rats with esculetin (35 mg kg−1, orally) and scoparone (35 mg kg−1, orally) significantly prevented CCl4-induced decrease in MDA levels and increase in SOD and CAT, whereas 4-methylumbelliferone (35 mg kg−1) and coumarin (30 mg kg−1) had no effect against CCl4-induced rise in serum enzymes. Esculetin and scoparone also showed protective properties as was evidenced in reduced LDH and GGT levels in serum. The results of this study indicate that the chemical structures of coumarins play an important role in the prevention of oxidative stress.  相似文献

We report a method for the simultaneous identification and quantification of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), monomethyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (MMPE), dimethyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (DMPE), and phosphatidylcholine (PC) species in lipid extracts. The method employs a specific "mass-tag" strategy where DMPE, MMPE, and PE species are chemically methylated with deuterated methyliodide (CD(3)I) to produce PC molecules having class-specific mass offsets of 3, 6 and 9Da, respectively. The derivatized aminoglycerophospholipids release characteristic phosphorylcholine-like fragment ions having specific mass offsets that powers sensitive and quantitative analysis by multiple precursor ion scanning on a hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Using the mass-tag strategy, we could for the first time determine the stoichiometric relationship between the biosynthetic intermediates MMPE and DMPE, and abundant PE and PC species in a single mass spectrometric analysis. We demonstrated the efficacy of the methodology by conducting a series of biochemical experiments using stable isotope labeled ethanolamine to survey the activities and substrate specificities of enzymes involved in PE metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Finally, we benchmarked the mass-tag strategy by specific and sensitive profiling of intermediate MMPE and DMPE species in liver.  相似文献

Ghrelin, an endogenous ligand for growth hormone secretagogue receptor, was identified in the rat stomach. This peptide acts through nitric oxide (NO) by expressing endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and down regulating inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) at its gastroproprotective effect against restraint stress induced damage. Recently the ghrelin receptor has also been detected in peripheral systems including immune tissue. We have investigated the possible effect of ghrelin on phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages in acute cold-restraint stress (ACRS) exposed rats. The rats were divided into control, stress and ghrelin groups. In ghrelin groups, single dose and three days consecutive dose of ghrelin (20 microg/kg. i.p.) were applied to rats that were exposed to ACRS for 4 h. 1 ml of saline was injected i.p. after ACRS for 3 consecutive days to the rats of the stress groups. Ghrelin administration reduced the increased phagocytic activity induced by ACRS. We conclude that ghrelin exerts an important role at macrophage phagocytic activity in ACRS exposed rats.  相似文献

It is well known that neuropeptide Y (NPY) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) exert antiepileptic effects in animal models. It has recently been shown that ghrelin neurons increase the activities of GABA and NPY in the brain. Therefore it can be said that ghrelin is an antiepileptic agent. In this study we aimed to investigate the antiepileptic effect of ghrelin in an acute experimental epilepsy model in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) injected rats. Adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into a control group and four experimental groups with seven rats in each group. In order to generate epileptic seizures, PTZ (50mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally. The experimental groups received intraperitoneal injections of ghrelin at doses of 20, 40, 60 and 80microg/kg 30min before PTZ injection. After PTZ injection, the latencies were separated into three components: first myoclonic jerk, generalized clonic seizures and tonic generalized extension. The injection of 50mg/kg PTZ-induced epileptic seizures in the control group. The onset times of the three characteristic behavioral changes were significantly delayed and the duration of tonic generalized extension was diminished by dose-dependent ghrelin administration. Our results demonstrated that ghrelin suppresses the onset time of PTZ-induced seizures. In the light of our current knowledge, it seems that ghrelin may be considered as an antiepileptic drug.  相似文献
