The effects in kidney of streptozotocin-induced diabetes and of insulin supplementation to diabetic animals on glycogen-metabolizing enzymes were determined. Kidney glycogen levels were approximately 30-fold higher in diabetic animals than in control or insulintreated diabetic animals. The activities of glycogenolytic enzymes i.e., phosphorylase (both a and b), phosphorylase kinase, and protein kinase were not significantly altered in the diabetic animals. Glycogen synthase (I form) activity decreased in the diabetic animals whereas total glycogen synthase (I + D) activity significantly increased in these animals. The activities were restored to control values after insulin therapy. Diabetic animals also showed a 3-fold increase in glucose 6-phosphate levels. These data suggest that higher accumulation of glycogen in kidneys of diabetic animals is due to increased amounts of total glycogen synthase and its activator glucose 6-phosphate.  相似文献

BackgroundSnakebite envenoming is listed as category ‘A’ Neglected Tropical Disease. To achieve the target of WHO (World Health Organization) 2019, it becomes necessary to understand various attributes associated with snakebite including community awareness, improvisation of medical facilities and to map the potential distribution of venomous snakes responsible for the bite. Hence this study is conducted in Sikkim, India to understand the epidemiology of snakebite in Sikkim. The potential distribution and risk mapping of five common venomous snakes are done for effective management of snakebite cases.Methods and findingsThe snakebite cases registered in six district hospitals and four PHCs (Primary Health Centers) of Sikkim were collected from the year 2011 to 2018. Community survey was also conducted to supplement the data. Ecological Niche Modeling (ENM) was performed to predict the potential habitat of five common venomous snakes of Sikkim. The risk modeling of snakebite cases was done at the level of Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) using Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) and Ordinary Linear Square (OLS) model. We found higher number of male victims inflicted with snakebite envenomation. The potential distribution of the five venomous snakes showed satisfactory mean AUC (Area under Curve) value. Both the models showed significant positive association of snakebite cases with habitat suitability of the venomous snakes. Hospital data revealed no death cases whereas community data reported 24 deaths.ConclusionsDeath from snakebite reflected in community data but not in hospital data strongly indicates the people’s belief in traditional medicine. Though people of Sikkim have rich traditional knowledge, in case of snakebite traditional practices may be ineffective leading to loss of life. Sensitizing people and improving medical facilities along with proper transport facilities in rural areas might significantly reduce the snakebite casualties in the state.  相似文献

The presence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in aquatic environments is a cause of concern, due to their toxicity, possible ecological impact and adverse effects in man. The release of these pollutants into receiving water bodies occurs primarily through the discharge of untreated wastewater and industrial effluents. Consequently, there is a need to remediate wastewater containing these compounds before its discharge. In this review, the occurrence of PFAAs in water streams is reviewed, with the aim of providing in-depth information on the harmful effects arising through exposure to these pollutants by both man and the environment. One viable strategy for the removal of PFAAs from wastewaters is adsorption. This technique is discussed in relation to a number of conventional adsorbents and they are compared with the behaviour of a more effective adsorbent, namely, carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In particular, various functionalization strategies can increase the efficiency of CNTs for the removal of PFAAs. Sorption of PFAAs onto CNTs demonstrates good removal efficiencies and equilibrium is attained faster than with conventional adsorbents. This is attributed to the inherent properties of CNTs, such as large surface area/porosity, and the ease with which new functional groups are introduced onto the walls of the tubes. The adsorption mechanism of PFAAs is primarily enhanced through electrostatic interactions; however, other intermolecular forces, such as hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions and ion-exchange, also play a role. This review aims at providing information on the occurrence and fate of PFAAs and the interactions involved in their removal from aqueous solutions by CNTs.  相似文献

Based on our recent findings that 25  µ M cadmium triggers oxidative stress–mediated caspase‐dependent apoptosis in murine thymocytes, this study is designed to explore whether Cd also induces caspase‐independent apoptosis. We found that pretreatment with caspase inhibitors fails to prevent Cd‐induced apoptosis completely, suggesting the possibility of an additional pathway. Western blot and flow cytometry techniques indicated marked expression of apoptosis‐inducing factor and endonuclease G in nuclear fraction, signifying their translocation from mitochondria to nucleus. Intracellular Ca2+ and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels significantly raised by Cd were restored by ruthenium red, which had no influence on mitochondrial membrane depolarization and caspase activity and apoptosis. Using cyclosporin A, ROS formation and mitochondrial membrane depolarization were completely abolished, whereas apoptosis was partly attenuated. These results clearly demonstrate more than one apoptotic pathway in thymocytes and support the role of mitochondrial permeability transition pore in the regulation of caspase‐independent cell death triggered by Cd. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck (SCCHN), one of the leading cancers worldwide, is most prevalent in Indian sub-continent. The major risk factors involved are smoking and consumption of alcohol, since they provide high free radical generating environment. We studied 8-oxoguanine DNA-glycosylase (OGG1) Ser326Cys polymorphism in 278 SCCHN cases and 278 matched controls by PCR-RFLP and observed that the variant genotype Ser/Cys exhibited an enhanced risk of ~1.7 folds (OR=1.71, 95% CI=1.20-2.93) and Cys/Cys ~2.5 folds (OR=2.55, 95% CI=1.29-5.00). Furthermore, we found a significant increase in salivary cell 8-OHdG with respect to Ser/Cys and Cys/Cys genotypes of OGG1 in SCCHN cases, when compared to Ser/Ser and Ser/Cys genotypes of the control population. Our results demonstrate that Ser326Cys variant genotype is associated with an increased risk of SCCHN in north India. Ser326Cys variant genotype was found to accumulate more of 8-OHdG, which may serve as a biomarker for early diagnosis of SCCHN.  相似文献

The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) offers a simple and cost‐effective method to harness waste energy and works on the principle of contact electrification and electrostatic induction. The performance and application of TENG depend to a great extent on the material used for fabrication. The most widely used materials include polymers and a few metals, well‐arranged in the triboelectric series so as to promote electrification upon contact. New triboelectric materials are important for extending the applications and specificity of the TENG. A TENG based on a metal–organic framework (MOF) of the zeolitic imidazole family is reported here. The zeolitic imidazole framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) and Kapton are used as the active materials for MOF–TENG fabrication. Surface potential, structural, morphological and electrical measurements reveals detailed characteristics of ZIF‐8, confirming the MOF as a potential candidate for TENG applications. The MOF–TENG generates a sustainable output of 164 V and 7 µA in vertical contact–separation mode. Finally, a self‐powered UV counterfeit system and a tetracycline sensor are successfully developed and demonstrated with the MOF–TENG. The sensor is highly selective and reusable simply by washing.  相似文献
