Background
Repeated adaptive radiations are evident when phenotypic divergence occurs within lineages, but this divergence into different forms is convergent when compared across lineages. Classic examples of such repeated adaptive divergence occur in island (for example, Caribbean Anolis lizards) and lake systems (for example, African cichlids). Host-parasite systems in many respects are analogous to island systems, where host species represent isolated islands for parasites whose life cycle is highly tied to that of their hosts. Thus, host-parasite systems might exhibit interesting cases of repeated adaptive divergence as seen in island and lake systems. The feather lice of birds spend their entire life cycle on the body of the host and occupy distinct microhabitats on the host: head, wing, body and generalist. These microhabitat specialists show pronounced morphological differences corresponding to how they escape from host preening. We tested whether these different microhabitat specialists were a case of repeated adaptive divergence by constructing both morphological and molecular phylogenies for a diversity of avian feather lice, including many examples of head, wing, body and generalist forms.Results
Morphological and molecular based phylogenies were highly incongruent, which could be explained by rampant convergence in morphology related to microhabitat specialization on the host. In many cases lice from different microhabitat specializations, but from the same group of birds, were sister taxa.Conclusions
This pattern indicates a process of repeated adaptive divergence of these parasites within host group, but convergence when comparing parasites across host groups. These results suggest that host-parasite systems might be another case in which repeated adaptive radiations could be relatively common, but potentially overlooked, because morphological convergence can obscure evolutionary relationships. 相似文献32.

Coumarin containing pyrazoline derivatives have been synthesized and tested as inhibitors of in vitro development of a chloroquine-sensitive (MRC-02) and chloroquine-resistant (RKL-2) strain of Plasmodium falciparum and in vivo Plasmodium berghei malaria. Docking study was also done on cysteine protease falcipain-2 which showed that the binding pose of C-14 molecule and epoxysuccinate, inhibitor of falcipain-2, binds in the similar pattern. The most active antimalarial compound was 3-(1-benzoyl-5-(4-flurophenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-3yl)-7-(diethyamino)-2H-chromen-2-one C-14, with an IC50 of 4.21?µg/ml provided complete protection to the infected mice at 24?mg/kg X 4?days respectively. 相似文献

Macroalgae and corals compete for the available space in coral reef ecosystems.While herbivorous reef fish play a beneficial role in decreasing the growth of macroalgae, macroalgal toxicity and overfishing of herbivores leads to proliferation of macroalgae. The abundance of macroalgae changes the community structure towards a macroalgae-dominated reef ecosystem. We investigate coral-macroalgal phase shifts by means of a continuous time model in a food chain. Conditions for local asymptotic stability of steady states are derived. It is observed that in the presence of macroalgal toxicity and overfishing, the system exhibits hysteresis through saddle-node bifurcation and transcritical bifurcation. We examine the effects of time lags in the liberation of toxins by macroalgae and the recovery of algal turf in response to grazing of herbivores on macroalgae by performing equilibrium and stability analyses of delay-differential forms of the ODE model. Computer simulations have been carried out to illustrate the different analytical results.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) and polyamines (PAs) are well-established growth regulators playing key roles in stress management among plants. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of epibrassinolide (EBL, an active BR) and spermidine (Spd, an active PA) on the tolerance of radish to oxidative stress induced by Cr (VI) metal. Our investigation aimed to study the impacts of EBL (10(-9) M) and/or Spd (1 mM) on the biochemical and physiological responses of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) under Cr-stress. Applications of EBL and/or Spd were found to improve growth of Cr-stressed seedlings in terms of root length, shoot length and fresh weight. Our data also indicated that applications of EBL and Spd have significant impacts, particularly when applied together, on the endogenous titers of PAs, free and bound forms of IAA and ABA in seedlings treated with Cr-stress. Additionally, co-applications of EBL and Spd modulated more remarkably the titers of antioxidants (glutathione, ascorbic acid, proline, glycine betaine and total phenol) and activities of antioxidant enzymes (guaicol peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase) in Cr-stressed plants than their individual applications. Attenuation of Cr-stress by EBL and/or Spd (more efficient with EBL and Spd combination) was also supported by enhanced values of stress indices, such as phytochelatins, photosynthetic pigments and total soluble sugars, and reduction in malondialdehyde and H(2)O(2) levels in Cr-treated seedlings. Diminution of ROS production and enhanced ROS scavenging capacities were also noted for EBL and/or Spd under Cr-stress. However, no significant reduction in Cr uptake was observed for co-application of EBL and Spd when compared to their individual treatments in Cr-stressed seedlings. Taken together, our results demonstrate that co-applications of EBL and Spd are more effective than their independent treatments in lowering the Cr-induced oxidative stress in radish, leading to improved growth of radish seedlings under Cr-stress. 相似文献

Nickel tolerance and accumulation by bacteria from rhizosphere of nickel hyperaccumulators in serpentine soil ecosystem of Andaman, India 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Rhizosphere microorganisms harboring nickel hyperaccumulators, Rinorea bengalensis (Wall.) O. K. and Dichapetalum gelonioides ssp. andamanicum (King) Leenh. endemic to serpentine outcrops of Andaman Islands, India, were screened for their tolerance and accumulation
of Ni. The rhizosphere soils from both the plants were rich in total and available Ni along with Co, Cr, Fe and Mg but poor
in microbial density and were dominated by bacteria. Out of total 123 rhizosphere microorganisms (99 bacteria and 24 fungi),
bacteria were more tolerant to Ni than fungi. Viable cells of selected Ni-tolerant bacterial isolates (MIC = 13.6–28.9 mM
Ni) belonging to Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Cupriavidus were capable of accumulating nickel (209.5–224.0 μM Ni g−1 protein) from aqueous solution. Cupriavidus pauculus KPS 201 (MTCC 6280), showing highest degree of nickel tolerance (MIC 28.9 mM Ni) and uptake (224.0 μM Ni g−1 protein, 60 min) was used for detailed study. Kidney stone disease (KSD) is a major clinical problem imposing a large burden for both healthcare and economy globally. In India, the prevalence of kidney stone disease is rapidly increasing. This study aimed to evaluate the association between genetic defects in vitamin D receptor (VDR), calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) and claudin 14 (CLDN14) genes and kidney stone disease in patients from eastern India. We enrolled 200 consecutive kidney stone patients (age 18–60 years) (cases) and their corresponding sex and age matched 200 normal individuals (controls). To identify genetic variants responsible for KSD, we performed sequence analysis of VDR, CaSR and CLDN14 genes. Four non-synonymous (rs1801725, rs1042636, rs1801726 and rs2228570), one synonymous (rs219780) and three intronic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs731236, rs219777 and rs219778) were identified. Genotype and allele frequency analysis of these SNPs revealed that, rs1801725 (Ala986Ser), rs1042636 (Arg990Gly) of CaSR gene and rs219778, rs219780 (Thr229Thr) of CLDN14 gene were significantly associated with KSD. Serum calcium levels were significantly higher in subjects carrying 986Ser allele and calcium excretion was higher in subjects bearing 990Gly allele. In conclusion, rs1801725, rs1042636, rs219778 and rs219780 SNPs were associated with kidney stone risk in patients from the eastern part of India. 相似文献

The role of the 50S particle of Escherichia coli ribosome and its 23S rRNA in the refolding and subunit association of dimeric porcine heart cytoplasmic malate dehydrogenase (s-MDH) has been investigated. The self-reconstitution of s-MDH is governed by two parallel pathways representing the folding of the inactive monomeric and the dimeric intermediates. However, in the presence of these folding modulators, only one first order kinetics was observed. To understand whether this involved the folding of the monomers or the dimers, subunit association of s-MDH was studied using fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate–rhodamine-isothiocyanate (FITC–RITC) fluorescence energy transfer and chemical cross-linking with gluteraldehyde. The observation suggests that during refolding the interaction of the unstructured monomers of s-MDH with these ribosomal folding modulators leads to very fast formation of structured monomers that immediately dimerise. These inactive dimers then fold to the native ones, which is the rate limiting step in 23S or 50S assisted refolding of s-MDH. Furthermore, the sequential action of the two fragments of domain V of 23S rRNA has been investigated in order to elucidate the mechanism. The central loop of domain V of 23S rRNA (RNA1) traps the monomeric intermediates, and when they are released by the upper stem–loop region of the domain V of 23S rRNA (RNA2) they are already structured enough to form dimeric intermediates which are directed towards the proper folding pathway. 相似文献

The effect of a short-stem femoral resurfacing component on load transfer and potential failure mechanisms has rarely been studied. The stem length has been reduced by approximately 50% as compared to the current long-stem design. Using 3-D FE models of natural and resurfaced femurs, the study is aimed at investigating the influence of a short-stem resurfacing component on load transfer and bone remodelling. Applied loading conditions include normal walking and stair climbing. The mechanical role of the stem along with implant–cement and stem–bone contact conditions was observed to be crucial. Shortening the stem length to half of the current length (long-stem) led to several favourable effects, even though the stress distributions in the implant and the cement were similar in both the cases. The short-stem implant led not only to a more physiological stress distribution but also to bone apposition (increase of 20–70% bone density) in the superior resurfaced head, when the stem–bone contact prevailed. This also led to a reduction in strain concentration in the cancellous bone around the femoral neck–component junction. The normalised peak strain in this region was lower for the short-stem design as compared to that of the long-stem one, thereby reducing the initial risk of neck fracture. The effect of strain shielding (50–75% reduction) was restricted to a small bone volume underlying the cement, which was approximately half of that of the long-stem design. Consequently, bone resorption was considerably less for the short-stem design. The short-stem design offers better prospects than the long-stem resurfacing component. 相似文献
