Summary Biodegradation of gamma irradiated lignocellulosic forest wastes byAspergillus niger exhibited higher release of reducing sugars and proteins. The pretreated needles ofCedrus deodara showed maximum release of sugars(8%) among fifteen materials studied whereas, only 1.5% sugars were recorded from wood ofPopulus ciliata. In all, this treatment increased the susceptibility of all lignocelluloses to the hydrolytic action of the fungus and resulted

Summary The biology of a freshwater fish, M. cavasius with particular reference to its length frequency, breeding and food has been described. length frequency distribution gave an indication of 4 modes during the quarter, July–September.Both the sexes attain maturity when they are approximately 10 cm long. Females grow larger than the males and are more abundant in the population. The spawning of this fish seems to take place during August and September. Maturing ovaries of females show only one batch of eggs which is probably shed in a single spawning act. The condition factor of the fish has no correlation either with the seasonal changes in maturity or with the feeding rhythm. The fish has an omnivorous habit and consumes all types of food available in the habitat. The feeding is high during the monsoon and winter months and low during the summer months.This work was carried out in the Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, U.P. During the anaerobic biodegradation of effluent from a dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) manufacturing plant, reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) degradation and biogas formation was observed after the waste-water concentration exceeded 25% of added feed COD. This condition reverted back to normal after 25–30 days when the DMT waste-water concentration in the feed was brought down to a non-toxic level. However, the above effects were observed only after the concentration of DMT waste-water reached more than 75% of added feed COD when biomass support particles (BSP) were augmented to the system. In the BSP system, a biomass concentration of up to 7000 mg/l was retained and the sludge retention time increased to > 200 days compared to 2200 mg/l and 8–10 days, respectively, in the system without BSP (control). Formaldehyde in the waste-water was found to be responsible for the observed toxicity. The BSP system was found to resist formaldehyde toxicity of up to 375 mg/l as against 125 mg/l in the control system. Moreover, the BSP system recovered from the toxicity much faster (15 days) than the control (25–30 days). The advantages of the BSP system in anaerobic treatment of DMT waste-water are discussed.

- Incorporating native shrubs into restoration projects can improve biodiversity conservation and enhance the sustainability of ecosystem functions. Shrubs grow under different forest canopy structures, having varied microclimatic conditions according to forest type and composition. Currently, there is a lack of information on propagation from seed and planting material availability for the utilization of shrubs in forest restoration.
- In the present study, we evaluated the effects of temperature and light on germination of ten shrub species (Ardisia japonica, Callicarpa cathayana, Callicarpa giraldii var. subcanescens, Deutzia schneideriana, Fraxinus sieboldiana, Hydrangea chinensis, Maesa japonica, Rhododendron simsii, Spiraea japonica var. fortunei and Weigela japonica var. sinica) occurring in subtropical forests in China.
- No seeds of any species germinated in the coolest thermal regime (5/10 °C), while optimal temperature requirements varied from 10/20 °C to 25/35 °C. Seeds of small-seeded species had higher germination percentages in the light treatments, while larger seeds were not photoblastic. There was no relationship between germination in the light and the seed shape index.
- Our results may assist in identification of seed traits and suitable shrub species for restoration in specific forest types, thus aiding native forest recovery of structure and composition. Successful recovery leads to enhanced biodiversity, reestablishment of microhabitats and ecological interactions in the forest understorey.

Summary The breeding cycle of the tropical spotted munia (Lonchura punctulata) is regulated by the photoperiodic synchronization of an endogenous circannual rhythm. Since the pineal gland has been implicated in circadian periodicity, in an attempt to understand the functioning of the mechanism(s) involved in photoperiodic synchronization of the circannual clock in the spotted munia the effect of pinealectomy on the reproductive cycle was studied in birds maintained in normal entrained (natural day length, NDL) and free-running (constant light, LL) conditions.Results indicate that pinealectomy had no effect in LL but that the reproductive cycle was altered marginally (in the first cycle only), and the body weight cycle drastically, in NDL conditions. It seems that the marginal effects observed on the overt reproductive cycle in the entrained condition may not be through the circannual oscillator itself but may perhaps reflect interference with processes involved in photoperiodic synchronization of the circannual rhythm. Alternatively, these effects could also result from general metabolic disturbances caused in the body by the absence of the pineal gland.Abbreviations

Taxa classified as subspecies may in fact be cryptic species. We assessed the taxonomic status of the Blue-throated Flycatcher Cyornis rubeculoides complex in India, which consists of several forms with similar plumages and song. We used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, plumage traits, and detailed song analysis to ascertain the taxonomic status of the different forms. The molecular data identified three primary clades: (1) in the west Himalayan foothills, (2) at higher elevations in the northeast hill states of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, and (3) at lower elevations in the northeastern hills of Meghalaya and the east Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh. The western clade represents nominate C. rubeculoides rubeculoides. The high-elevation eastern clade was considered to be C. rubeculoides rogersi, because it included a sample from this subspecies from near the type locality in southwest Myanmar. These two sister clades had an estimated divergence time of 1.5 million years (my). The low-elevation east clade has previously been assigned to C. rubeculoides, but we showed it is closely related to the Hainan Blue Flycatcher Cyornis hainanus, formerly thought to breed only further east, with an estimated divergence time of only ~0.8 my. This clade may represent a subspecies of C. hainanus or, given reports of widespread sympatry with C. hainanus in Thailand, a distinct species, Cyornis dialilaemus. However, more research is advocated, including molecular data, from the area of overlap. Songs were remarkably similar across all taxa. In playback experiments, C. r. rubeculoides in the west responded to all taxa. Context: Zaltoprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has potent inhibitory action against nociceptive responses. However, gastrointestinal ulcer accompanied with anemia due to the bleeding are most cited side effects associated with it. Due to this, administration of Zaltoprofen is not suitable for individuals with gastric ulcer. Thus, there is unmet need to develop an alternative delivery system that will be easy to administer and can avoid ulcerogenic side effects associated with it.Objective: Present study was aimed to prepare and evaluate microemulsion (ME) and microemulsion-based gel formulation of Zaltoprofen for transdermal delivery.Materials and methods: Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were utilized to prepare ME formulations. Effect of surfactant and co-surfactant mass ratio on the ME formation and permeation of ME were evaluated and formulation was optimized. Permeation studies were performed using excised pigskin was studied. Efficacy of optimized formulations was evaluated in rat model of inflammation and pain.Results: Composition of optimized formulation was 1% (w/w) Zaltoprofen, 20% (w/w) Capryol 90, 50% (w/w) Smix (2:1, Cremophor RH 40 and Transcutol P). Optimized formulation showed globule size of 22.11?nm, polydispersity index of 0.251 and zeta potential of –11.4 mV. ME gel was found safe in skin irritation study. Significant analgesic activity and anti-inflammatory activity of ME gel was observed in hot plate test and rat paw edema test, respectively.Conclusion: In conclusion, results of present study suggest that ME could be a promising formulation for transdermal administration of Zaltoprofen. 相似文献
