Hydrogen sulphide is a common toxic contaminant in natural gas and oil. In this study, the strictly autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans , which oxidizes reduced sulphur compounds, was used to desulphur petroleum oil and gas. The reaction was carried out in a closed vessel containing substrate mixed with a bacterial suspension. The significance of the hydrogen sulphide oxidizing activity of T. ferrooxidans is discussed.  相似文献

Ibuprofen showed significant antifungal activity in vitro against dermatophytes at pH 5 (MIC: 5–40 μg ml-1). In this respect it is comparatively more efficient than two well known and medically used antifungal compounds, benzoic and salicylic acids. This compound with anti-inflammatory activity which is not found in any other conventional antifungal organic acids, may have clinical prospects.  相似文献

Prey seldom rely on a single type of antipredator defence, often using multiple defences to avoid predation. In many cases, selection in different contexts may favour the evolution of multiple defences in a prey. However, a prey may use multiple defences to protect itself during a single predator encounter. Such “defence portfolios” that defend prey against a single instance of predation are distributed across and within successive stages of the predation sequence (encounter, detection, identification, approach (attack), subjugation and consumption). We contend that at present, our understanding of defence portfolio evolution is incomplete, and seen from the fragmentary perspective of specific sensory systems (e.g., visual) or specific types of defences (especially aposematism). In this review, we aim to build a comprehensive framework for conceptualizing the evolution of multiple prey defences, beginning with hypotheses for the evolution of multiple defences in general, and defence portfolios in particular. We then examine idealized models of resource trade-offs and functional interactions between traits, along with evidence supporting them. We find that defence portfolios are constrained by resource allocation to other aspects of life history, as well as functional incompatibilities between different defences. We also find that selection is likely to favour combinations of defences that have synergistic effects on predator behaviour and prey survival. Next, we examine specific aspects of prey ecology, genetics and development, and predator cognition that modify the predictions of current hypotheses or introduce competing hypotheses. We outline schema for gathering data on the distribution of prey defences across species and geography, determining how multiple defences are produced, and testing the proximate mechanisms by which multiple prey defences impact predator behaviour. Adopting these approaches will strengthen our understanding of multiple defensive strategies.  相似文献

Aim

To develop a causal understanding of the drivers of Species distribution model (SDM) performance.

Location

United Kingdom (UK).

Methods

We measured the accuracy and variance of SDMs fitted for 518 species of invertebrate and plant in the UK. Our measure of variance reflects variation among replicate model fits, and taxon experts assessed model accuracy. Using directed acyclic graphs, we developed a causal model depicting plausible effects of explanatory variables (e.g. species' prevalence, sample size) on SDM accuracy and variance and quantified those effects using a multilevel piecewise path model.

Results

According to our model, sample size and niche completeness (proportion of a species' niche covered by sampling) directly affect SDM accuracy and variance. Prevalence and range completeness have indirect effects mediated by sample size. Challenging conventional wisdom, we found that the effect of prevalence on SDM accuracy is positive. This reflects the facts that sample size has a positive effect on accuracy and larger sample sizes are possible for widespread species. It is possible, however, that the omission of an unobserved confounder biased this effect. Previous studies, which reported negative correlations between prevalence and SDM accuracy, conditioned on sample size.

Main conclusions

Our model explicates the causal basis of previously reported correlations between SDM performance and species/data characteristics. It also suggests that niche completeness has similarly large effects on SDM accuracy and variance as sample size. Analysts should consider niche completeness, or proxies thereof, in addition to sample size when deciding whether modelling is worthwhile.  相似文献

Erectile impotence is commonly encountered in male patients with respiratory failure and hypoxia. In this study, 42% of the patients experienced reversal of sexual impotence during long term oxygen therapy (LTOT). We examine the association between sexual impotence, gonadal axis hormones, hypoxia, and oxygen therapy. Nineteen sexually impotent male patients eligible for LTOT (pO2 < 7.3 kPa during stable disease) and with sexual impotence received oxygen therapy for 1 month (n = 12) or 24 h (n = 7). pO2, LH, FSH, testosterone, and SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) were monitored. Five of 12 patients receiving oxygen for 1 month regained sexual potency. The responders showed a significant increase in arterial pO2 and serum testosterone, and a decline in SHBG compared to non-responders. None of the patients receiving oxygen for 24 h experienced reversal of sexual impotence, despite a significant increase in pO2. In these patients, serum testosterone did not increase significantly. Reversal of sexual impotence may be achieved in some patients with respiratory failure. The oxygen therapy must, however be administered for an adequate length of time.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider several variations of the following basic tiling problem: given a sequence of real numbers with two size-bound parameters, we want to find a set of tiles of maximum total weight such that each tiles satisfies the size bounds. A solution to this problem is important to a number of computational biology applications such as selecting genomic DNA fragments for PCR-based amplicon microarrays and performing homology searches with long sequence queries. Our goal is to design efficient algorithms with linear or near-linear time and space in the normal range of parameter values for these problems. For this purpose, we first discuss the solution to a basic online interval maximum problem via a sliding-window approach and show how to use this solution in a nontrivial manner for many of the tiling problems introduced. We also discuss NP-hardness results and approximation algorithms for generalizing our basic tiling problem to higher dimensions. Finally, computational results from applying our tiling algorithms to genomic sequences of five model eukaryotes are reported.  相似文献

Mutualistic associations of obligate intracellular bacteria and insects have attracted much interest in the past few years due to the evolutionary consequences for their genome structure. However, much less attention has been paid to the metabolic ramifications for these endosymbiotic microorganisms, which have to compete with but also to adapt to another metabolism--that of the host cell. This review attempts to provide insights into the complex physiological interactions and the evolution of metabolic pathways of several mutualistic bacteria of aphids, ants, and tsetse flies and their insect hosts.  相似文献

This article examines three social contexts of the production and exchange of craft objects in Senegal. In each context, the extent to which the production of craft items is visible or invisible varies, and these variations in turn affect the ways in which value is construed. These examples are understood as different 'regimes of value' (Appadurai), in whose constitution the production of craft objects, whether this is visible or invisible, plays a crucial role. The argument is that the concept of 'regime of value' needs to address more than simply the 'flow' of commodities, and must have regard for the organization of the relations between production, distribution, and consumption of craft objects. The article also frames these West African examples within a broader argument about the importance of the concept of production in order to redress the over-reliance of contemporary social theories on notions of consumption.  相似文献
