The genus Isoetes L. in India is represented by 14species, of which eight species are recognized as being local endemics [confinedto one particular phyto-geographical division (PGD)] while the remaining sixoccur in more than one PGD and are described as endemic to a wider range. Thelocal endemic species are Isoetes dixitei,Isoetes panchganiensis and Isoetessahyadriensis in Western Ghats region; Isoetespantii, Isoetes bilaspurensis, Isoetesreticulata and Isoetes tuberculata inChotanagpur Malwa Vindhya Plateau and Isoetes debii innortheastern India. The wider endemic species are Isoetespanchananii, Isoetes sampathkumaranii,Isoetes rajasthanensis, Isoetesmahadevensis, Isoetes indica andIsoetes coromandelina. Our studies on the patterns ofendemism suggest that the radiation of quillworts advanced from dry lowlandareas to the rainy uplands and mountains. Isoetescoromandelina is the first Indian quillwort to colonize in lowlandsof the coastal zone (Coromandel), from where it spread to different parts of thesub-continent and gave rise to new species. Thus this species is a key Indianspecies which has played an important role in the radiation of quillwort in thecountry and appeared as the connecting link among the quillwort flora of variousPGDs. The centres of diversity for almost all the presently known Indianquillworts species are recognized.  相似文献

Fruits in Calotropis procera can be distinguished into five discrete but contiguous stages on the basis of diameter and seed color. Seeds from dehisced fruits at stage V germinated >80% on moist substratum in darkness. This was rather unexpected because the seeds developed and matured in an FR-enriched microenvironment (R:FR ratio ~0.3) of the chlorophyll-containing maternal tissue and displayed low-fluence response (LFR) mode of phytochrome action. In contrast to >80% dark-germinating seeds from dehisced fruits at stage V, about 50% seeds from undehisced fruits at that stage were dark germinating, whereas another 30% seeds required light for germination. The light-requiring fraction of the seed population did not only respond to a very low-fluence R and to a short FR pulse, but also lacked R–FR reversibility thereby indicating to a very low-fluence response (VLFR) mode of phytochrome action. The present study reporting VLFR to non-dormant seed state transition in C. procera suggested that the state of phytochrome and the subsequent seed germination response in dry-seeded species, besides being determined by the light environment immediately before maturation drying, might also be regulated by a post-dehiscence light signal.  相似文献

The dimethylated ribosomal nucleoside m(4)Cm and its monomethylated analogues Cm and m(4)C were synthesized. The conformations (syn vs anti) of the three modified nucleosides and cytidine were determined by CD and 1D NOE difference spectroscopy. The ribose sugar puckers were determined by the use of proton coupling constants. The position of modification (e.g., O vs N methylation) was found to have an effect on the sugar pucker of cytidine.  相似文献

In healthy subjects, a close temporal correlation exists between contractions of the circular muscle (CM) and longitudinal muscle (LM) layers of the esophagus. Patients with nutcracker esophagus show disassociation between the peak of contractions of the CM and LM layers and the peak of contraction 1-3 s apart (Jung HY, Puckett JL, Bhalla V, Rojas-Feria M, Bhargava V, Liu J, Mittal RK. Gastroenterology 128: 1179-1186, 2005). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (edrophonium) and acetylcholine receptor antagonist (atropine) on human esophageal peristalsis in normal subjects. High-frequency intraluminal ultrasound imaging and manometry were performed simultaneously during swallow-induced peristalsis in ten normal subjects. Standardized 5-ml water swallows were recorded 2 cm above the lower esophageal sphincter under three study conditions: control, edrophonium (80 microg/kg iv), and atropine (10 microg/kg iv). A close temporal correlation exists between the peak pressure and peak wall thickness during the control period. The mean time lag between the peak LM and peak CM contraction was 0.03 s. After edrophonium administration, the mean contraction amplitude increased from 101 +/- 9 mmHg to 150 +/- 20 mmHg (P < 0.05) and mean peak muscle thickness increased from 3.0 +/- 0.2 mm to 3.6 +/- 0.3 mm (P < 0.01), and duration of both CM and LM contractions were also increased. Furthermore, the mean time difference between the peak LM and CM was increased to 1.1 s, (ranging 0.2 to 3.4 s) (P < 0.0001). We conclude that cholinomimetic agent induces discoordination between the two muscle layers of the esophagus.  相似文献

The length at which a muscle operates in vivo (operational length) and the length at which it generates maximal force (optimal length) may be quite different. We studied active and passive length-tension characteristics of external anal sphincter (EAS) in vivo and in vitro to determine the optimal and operational length of rabbit EAS. For the in vitro studies, rings of EAS (n = 4) were prepared and studied in a muscle bath under isometric conditions. For in vivo studies, female rabbits (n = 19) were anesthetized and anal canal pressure was recorded by use of a sleeve sensor placed in the custom-designed catheter holders of 4.5-, 6-, and 9-mm diameters. Measurements were obtained at rest and during EAS electrical stimulation. Sarcomere length of EAS muscle was measured by laser diffraction technique with no probe and three probes in the anal canal. In vitro studies revealed 2,054 mN/cm(2) active tension at optimal length. In vivo studies revealed a probe size-dependent increase in anal canal pressure and tension. Maximal increase in anal canal tension with stimulation was recorded with the 9-mm probe. Increases in anal canal tension with increase in probe size were completely abolished by pancuronium bromide. EAS muscle sarcomere length without and with 9-mm probe in the anal canal were 2.11 +/- 0.08 and 2.99 +/- 0.07 microm, respectively. Optimal sarcomere length, based on the thin filament length measured by thin filament analysis, is 2.44 +/- 0.10 microm. These data show that the operational length of EAS is significantly shorter than its optimal length. Our findings provide insight into EAS function and we propose the possibility of increasing anal canal pressure by surgical manipulation of the EAS sarcomere length.  相似文献

Introduction

Malignant ascites (MA) is a major cause of morbidity that occurs in 37% of ovarian cancer patients. The accumulation of MA in the peritoneal cavity due to cancer results in debilitating symptoms and extremely poor quality of life. There is an urgent unmet need to expand the understanding of MA to design effective treatment strategies, and to improve MA diagnosis.

Objective

Our purpose here is to contribute to a better characterization of MA metabolic composition in ovarian cancer.

Method

We determined the metabolic composition of ascitic fluids resulting from orthotopic growth of two ovarian cancer cell lines, the mouse ID8- vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-Defb29 cell line and the human OVCAR3 cell line using high-resolution 1H MRS. ID8-VEGF-Defb29 tumors induce large volumes of ascites, while OVCAR3 tumors induce ascites less frequently and at smaller volumes. To better understand the factors driving the metabolic composition of the fluid, we characterized the metabolism of these ovarian cancer cells in culture by analyzing cell lysates and conditioned culture media with 1H NMR.

Results

Distinct metabolite patterns were detected in ascitic fluid collected from OVCAR3 and ID8-VEGF-Defb29 tumor bearing mice that were not reflected in the corresponding cell culture or conditioned medium.

Conclusion

High-resolution 1H NMR metabolic markers of MA can be used to improve characterization and diagnosis of MA. Metabolic characterization of MA can provide new insights into how MA fluid supports cancer cell growth and resistance to treatment, and has the potential to identify metabolic targeting strategies to reduce or eliminate the formation of MA.

We investigated the cardioprotective effect of 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA), an inhibitior of mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase, and we wanted to show whether this protection is mediated by of opening mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) channels. Adult rabbits were treated with either 3-NPA (3 mg/kg iv) or saline (n = 6 rabbits/group). After 30 min (for early phase) or 24 h (for late phase) of the treatment, the animals were subjected to 30 min of ischemia and 3 h of reperfusion (ischemia-reperfusion). 5-Hydroxydecanoate (5-HD, 5 mg/kg iv),the mitochondrial K(ATP) channel blocker, was administered 10 min before ischemia-reperfusion in the saline- and 3-NPA-treated rabbits. 3-NPA caused a decrease in the infarct size from 27.8 +/- 4.2% in the saline group to 16.5 +/- 1.0% in the 3-NPA-treated rabbits during early phase and from 30.4 +/- 4.2% in the saline group to 17.6 +/- 1.05 in the 3-NPA group during delayed phase (P < 0.05, % of risk area). The anti-infarct effect of 3-NPA was blocked by 5-HD as shown by an increase in infarct size to 33 +/- 2.7% (early phase) and 31 +/- 2.4% (delayed phase) (P < 0.05 vs. 3-NPA groups). 5-HD had no proischemic effect in control animals. Also, 3-NPA had no effect on systemic hemodynamics. We conclude that 3-NPA induces long-lasting anti-ischemic effects via opening of mitochondrial K(ATP) channels.  相似文献

This paper presents a comprehensive empirical analysis of the factors affecting growth and psychological development of over 100 infants from birth to age 6 months in the Embu region of Kenya. The analysis was divided into four parts. First, infants' birth weight, and length and head circumference as measured few days after birth, were modeled using multiple regression models. Maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestation period, and parity were associated with infants' anthropometric measurements (P < 0.05). Second, the scores on seven clusters of the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale were explained by health and socioeconomic indicators. While the models had poor predictive power, the scores were comparable to those reported in the literature for Puerto Rican and African American infants. The third part of the analysis modeled infant growth between 1-6 months by analyzing longitudinal data on length, head circumference, and weight. Dynamic models were postulated for the effects of nutritional, socioeconomic, and environmental factors and morbidity on anthropometric variables. The results showed that infants' calcium intakes were positively associated with length (P < 0.05). Maternal BMI and hemoglobin concentration were positively associated with infant weight (P < 0. 05); infant morbidity was negatively associated with weight (P < 0. 05). Lastly, the infants' scores at 6 months on the Bayley Motor Scale and on eight items from the Bayley Infant Behavior Record were explained using anthropometric, socioeconomic, and psychological variables. The infants' arm circumference and intake of protein were significant predictors of scores on the Bayley Motor Scale. In addition, time spent by the mother talking to the infant was positively associated with the scores on the Bayley Infant Behavior Record. The empirical results have implications for identifying vulnerable children in developing countries.  相似文献

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is an extraordinarily successful human pathogen, one of the major causes of death by infectious disease worldwide. A key issue for the study of tuberculosis is to understand why individuals infected with Mtb experience different clinical outcomes. To better understand the dynamics of Mtb infection and immunity, we coupled nonhuman primate experiments with a mathematical model we previously developed that qualitatively and quantitatively captures important processes of cellular priming and activation. These processes occur between the lung and the nearest draining lymph node where the key cells mediating this process are the dendritic cells (DC). The nonhuman primate experiments consist of bacteria and cell numbers from tissues of 17 adult cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) that were infected with Mtb strain Erdman ( approximately 25 CFU/animal via bronchoscope). The main result of this work is that delays in either DC migration to the draining lymph node or T cell trafficking to the site of infection can alter the outcome of Mtb infection, defining progression to primary disease or latent infection and reactivated tuberculosis. Our results also support the idea that the development of a new generation of treatment against Mtb should optimally elicit a fast DC turnover at the site of infection, as well as strong activation of DCs for maximal Ag presentation and production of key cytokines. This will induce the most protective T cell response.  相似文献

Eleven varieties of Sorghum bicolor, subjected to PEG-mediated drought stress were compared for their photosynthetic performance. The varieties differed in their relative water content over a range of PEG concentrations (0-25%). CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance and the quantum yield of PSII electron transport decreased with increasing PEG concentrations in all varieties. However the intercellular CO2 concentration showed a nonlinear PEG concentration-dependent change. At lower PEG concentrations there was a decrease in the levels of intercellular CO2 concentration in all varieties that could be attributed to stomatal closure. At higher PEG concentrations, some varieties showed an increase in the intercellular CO2 concentration, indicating an inhibition of photosynthetic activity due to non-stomatal effects, while others did not. It was seen that the varieties differed in the stress thresholds at which stomatal and metabolic limitations to photosynthesis occur. These differences in the photosynthetic adaptation of Sorghum varieties could be useful in identifying genotypes showing large differences in photosynthetic adaptation, which could be useful in mapping photosynthetic traits for drought stress tolerance.  相似文献
