Social behaviour, particularly dominance behaviour, in a colony of domestic guinea pigs was investigated. Observations were of four different types, (1) daily observations on the whole group; (2) interactions between pairs of ♂♂ (in all possible combinations) were recorded when competing over a single water source; (3) interactions between all the ♂♂ in the group observed together at a single water source; (4) as (2) but in the absence of water, in order to observe fighting. It was hoped that the study would demonstrate the extent to which a hierarchial structure, if one such existed, was consistent in different social contexts.  相似文献

The distribution and morphology of antennal sensilla coeloconica in parasitic and predaceous biting midges were studied in females of Forcipomyia (feeding on the blood of frogs), Atrichopogon (feeding on haemolymph), Austroconops, Culicoides (feeding on the blood of birds and mammals) and Brachypogon (feeding on haemolymph and dissolved tissues of insects) (all: Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). A Lower Cretaceous female of Archiculicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from Lebanese amber, which fed on the blood of unknown vertebrates, was also examined. In sensilla coeloconica ringed by microtrichia, the peg is grooved longitudinally and protrudes distinctly from the pit. We suggest that the microtrichia encircling the protruding peg form a structure resembling a picket fence in order to maintain a higher level of humidity, which facilitates the capture and transport of odour molecules through the channels in the peg wall. Sensilla coeloconica ringed by microtrichia function as very effective chemoreceptors in host‐ and prey‐seeking activity. During the evolution of Ceratopogonidae, sensilla coeloconica with a fence of microtrichia have evolved twice in groups feeding on the blood of vertebrates (i.e. in the basal lineage: Lower Cretaceous or earlier) and in the subgenus Lasiohelea of Forcipomyia (Palaeogene). Sensilla coeloconica ringed by microtrichia are described for the first time in the relict genus Austroconops.  相似文献

Treatment with antioxidants may act more effectively to alter markers of free radical damage in combinations than singly. This study has determined whether treatment with combinations of pycnogenol, β‐carotene, and α‐lipoic acid was more effective at reducing oxidative stress in diabetic rats than treatment with these antioxidants alone. It is not feasible, based on this study, to assume that there are interactive effects that make combinations of these antioxidants more effective than any one alone to combat oxidative stress. Female Sprague‐Dawley rats, normal and streptozotocin‐induced diabetic, were treated (10 mg/kg/day ip for 14 days) with pycnogenol, β‐carotene, pycnogenol + β‐carotene, or pycnogenol + β‐carotene + α‐lipoic acid; controls were untreated. Concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, glutathione and glutathione disulfide, and activities of glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase were measured in liver, kidney, and heart. Four types of effects were observed: (1) treatment with β‐carotene alone either reversed (cardiac glutathione disulfide) or elevated (cardiac glutathione, hepatic glutathione peroxidase activity) levels seen in diabetic animals; (2) β‐carotene alone produced no effect, but pycnogenol both alone and in combinations elevated (renal glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities, hepatic glutathione reductase activity and glutathione disulfide) or depressed (cardiac glutathione disulfide) levels seen in untreated diabetic animals; (3) all treatments with antioxidants, either alone or in combination, either normalized (lipid peroxidation in all tissues), elevated (hepatic GSH, cardiac glutathione peroxidase activity), or had no effect on (activities of hepatic catalase and superoxide dismutase in all tissues) levels seen in diabetic animals; (4) in only one case (cardiac glutathione reductase activity) levels in diabetic animals treated with combinations of antioxidants were normal, but elevated in animals treated with either antioxidant alone. Little is known about the evolutionary history of most complex multi‐trophic insect communities. Widespread species from different trophic levels might evolve in parallel, showing similar spatial patterns and either congruent temporal patterns (Contemporary Host‐tracking) or later divergence in higher trophic levels (Delayed Host‐tracking). Alternatively, host shifts by natural enemies among communities centred on different host resources could disrupt any common community phylogeographic pattern. We examined these alternative models using two Megastigmus parasitoid morphospecies associated with oak cynipid galls sampled throughout their Western Palaearctic distributions. Based on existing host cynipid data, a parallel evolution model predicts that eastern regions of the Western Palaearctic should contain ancestral populations with range expansions across Europe about 1.6 million years ago and deeper species‐level divergence at both 8–9 and 4–5 million years ago. Sequence data from mitochondrial cytochrome b and multiple nuclear genes showed similar phylogenetic patterns and revealed cryptic genetic species within both morphospecies, indicating greater diversity in these communities than previously thought. Phylogeographic divergence was apparent in most cryptic species between relatively stable, diverse, putatively ancestral populations in Asia Minor and the Middle East, and genetically depauperate, rapidly expanding populations in Europe, paralleling patterns in host gallwasp species. Mitochondrial and nuclear data also suggested that Europe may have been colonized multiple times from eastern source populations since the late Miocene. Temporal patterns of lineage divergence were congruent within and across trophic levels, supporting the Contemporary Host‐tracking Hypothesis for community evolution.  相似文献

Glucose is the typical carbon source for producing microbial polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) with single cell microorganisms such as thraustochytrids. We assessed the use of a fish oil derived glycerol by-product (raw glycerol), produced by a fish oil processing plant, as a carbon source to produce single cell oil rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), notably docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These results were compared to those obtained when using analytical grade glycerol, and glucose. The thraustochytrid strain tested produced similar amounts of oil and PUFA when grown with both types of glycerol, and results were also similar to those obtained using glucose. After 6 days of fermentation, approximately 320 mg/g of oil, and 145 mg/g of PUFA were produced with all carbon sources tested. All oils produced by our strain were 99.95% in the triacylglycerol form. To date, this is the first report of using raw glycerol derived from fish oil for producing microbial triglyceride oil rich in PUFA.  相似文献

Abstract 1 We analysed time series of spruce bark beetles (Nt) caught in pheromone traps from 1979 to 2000 in approximately 100 localities throughout south‐east Norway. 2 The analysis was performed at two spatial scales (whole area and 12 subregions), and included additional analyses of the time‐series sequences before and after a large windfelling (1987) that appeared to induce a shift in the dynamics. 3 Regression of Rt (logarithmic per‐capita growth rate) on Nt ? d indicated that the endogenous dynamics were dominated by lag 1 density dependence. This was particularly so in the sequence after the large windfelling (R2 = 0.79), probably due to intraspecific competition for breeding substrate. 4 The sequence before the windfelling (1979–1987) was declining without significant density dependence. We suggest this to be a transition period, reflecting a drop in carrying capacity due to depletion of susceptible trees during the preceding outbreak period (1970s) and a drop in beetle number to below the density required to kill trees. 5 Windfelling (Wt ? 1) appears to be an important predictor of the dynamics; however, it was difficult to evaluate the statistical significance of this factor due to only one large windfall event. 6 The weak influence of drought stress (Dt ? 1) could be due to the absence of severe drought periods within the time series.  相似文献
