Large‐scale monitoring of crop growth and yield has important value for forecasting food production and prices and ensuring regional food security. A newly emerging satellite retrieval, solar‐induced fluorescence (SIF) of chlorophyll, provides for the first time a direct measurement related to plant photosynthetic activity (i.e. electron transport rate). Here, we provide a framework to link SIF retrievals and crop yield, accounting for stoichiometry, photosynthetic pathways, and respiration losses. We apply this framework to estimate United States crop productivity for 2007–2012, where we use the spaceborne SIF retrievals from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment‐2 satellite, benchmarked with county‐level crop yield statistics, and compare it with various traditional crop monitoring approaches. We find that a SIF‐based approach accounting for photosynthetic pathways (i.e. C3 and C4 crops) provides the best measure of crop productivity among these approaches, despite the fact that SIF sensors are not yet optimized for terrestrial applications. We further show that SIF provides the ability to infer the impacts of environmental stresses on autotrophic respiration and carbon‐use‐efficiency, with a substantial sensitivity of both to high temperatures. These results indicate new opportunities for improved mechanistic understanding of crop yield responses to climate variability and change. 相似文献

Sixty-seven patients with neoplastic diseases were treated with 151 courses of methylbis (beta-chloroethyl)amine hydrochloride (HN2). Seventy-seven of the courses consisted of single injections of 0.2 to 0.4 mg. per kilogram of body weight, and 35 courses were given as single injections of 0.6 mg. per kilogram of body weight.Twenty-three patients with Hodgkin''s disease were treated. Remissions averaged approximately three months in 13 patients who were in good or fair general physical condition, and 1.5 months in 11 patients who were in poor or moribund condition; one of the 11 did not respond to the therapy.Fifteen patients with lymphosarcoma were treated. Remissions averaged between one and two months in four patients who were in good or fair general physical condition. Of the remaining 11 patients, two showed no response, and the longest remission among the remaining nine was approximately 40 days.Satisfactory remissions of one to three months were obtained in four patients with mycosis fungoides treated with single courses of 0.3 mg. per kilogram of body weight.Serious toxic reactions were observed in six patients, four of whom died. In five of the six instances the reactions consisted of pancytopenia and hemorrhagic diathesis. All these patients were in poor general or hematologic status before therapy.In general, large single doses of HN2 were neither more nor less effective than the four-to six-day course usually employed with this agent. Combination of the administration of HN2 with artificial hyperpyrexia, or with concurrent courses of pteroylglutamic conjugates, did not enhance the therapeutic effects of the agent. 相似文献

Introduction
Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for HIV infection. MSM in Central Asia, however, are not adequately studied to assess their risk of HIV transmission. Methods: This study used respondent driven sampling methods to recruit 400 MSM in Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, into a cross-sectional study. Participation involved a one-time interviewer-administered questionnaire and rapid HIV screening test. Prevalence data were adjusted for respondent network size and recruitment patterns. Multivariate logistic regression was used to investigate the association between HIV and selected risk factors, and unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) and selected risk factors.Results
After respondent driven sampling (RDS) weighted analysis, 20.2% of MSM were HIV-positive, and 69.0% had unprotected sex with at least one male partner in the last 12 months. Regression analysis showed that HIV infection was associated with unprotected receptive anal sex (AOR: 2.00; 95% CI: 1.04–3.84). Having unprotected anal intercourse with male partners, a measure of HIV risk behaviors, was associated with being single (AOR: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.23–0.64); very difficult access to lubricants (AOR: 11.08; 95% CI: 4.93–24.91); STI symptoms (AOR: 3.45; 95% CI: 1.42–8.40); transactional sex (AOR: 3.21; 95% CI: 1.66–6.22); and non-injection drug use (AOR: 3.10; 95% CI: 1.51–6.36).Conclusions
This study found a high HIV prevalence among MSM in Almaty, and a population of MSM engaging in multiple high-risk behavior in Almaty. Greater access to HIV education and prevention interventions is needed to limit the HIV epidemic among MSM in Almaty. 相似文献997.
Acinetobacter calcoaceticus belongs to a large phylogenetic cluster of gram-negative procaryotes that all utilize a bifunctional P-protein (chorismate mutase-prephenate dehydratase) [EC 5.4.99.5-4.2.1.51] for phenylalanine biosynthesis. These two enzyme activities from Ac. calcoaceticus were inseparable by gel-filtration or DEAE-cellulose chromatography. The molecular weight of the P-protein in the absence of effectors was 65,000. In the presence of L-tyrosine (dehydratase activator) or L-phenylalanine (inhibitor of both P-protein activities), the molecular weight increased to 122,000. Maximal activation (23-fold) of prephenate dehydratase was achieved at 0.85 mM L-tyrosine. Under these conditions, dehydratase activity exhibited a hysteretic response to increasing protein concentration. Substrate saturation curves for prephenate dehydratase were hyperbolic at L-tyrosine concentrations sufficient to give maximal activation (yielding a Km,app of 0.52 mM for prephenate), whereas at lower L-tyrosine concentrations the curves were sigmoidal. Dehydratase activity was inhibited by L-phenylalanine, and exhibited cooperative interactions for inhibitor binding. A Hill plot yielded an n' value of 3.1. Double-reciprocal plots of substrate saturation data obtained in the presence of L-phenylalanine indicated cooperative interactions for prephenate in the presence of inhibitor. The n values obtained were 1.4 and 3.0 in the absence or presence of 0.3 mM L-phenylalanine, respectively. The hysteretic response of chorismate mutase activity to increasing enzyme concentration was less dramatic than that of prephenate dehydratase. A Km,app for chorismate of 0.63 mM was obtained. L-Tyrosine did not affect chorismate mutase activity, but mutase activity was inhibited both by L-phenylalanine and by prephenate. Interpretations are given about the physiological significance of the overall pattern of allosteric control of the P-protein, and the relationship between this control and the effector-induced molecular-weight transitions. The properties of the P-protein in Acinetobacter are considered within the context of the ubiquity of the P-protein within the phylogenetic cluster to which this genus belongs. 相似文献

Phage holins and endolysins have long been known to play key roles in lysis of the host cell, disrupting the cytoplasmic membrane and peptidoglycan (PG) layer, respectively. For phages of Gram‐negative hosts, a third class of proteins, the spanins, are involved in disrupting the outer membrane (OM). Rz and Rz1, the components of the lambda spanin, are, respectively, a class II inner membrane protein and an OM lipoprotein, are thought to span the entire periplasm by virtue of C‐terminal interactions of their soluble domains. Here, the periplasmic domains of Rz and Rz1 have been purified and shown to form dimeric and monomeric species, respectively, in solution. Circular dichroism analysis indicates that Rz has significant alpha‐helical character, but much less than predicted, whereas Rz1, which is 25% proline, is unstructured. Mixture of the two proteins leads to complex formation and an increase in secondary structure, especially alpha‐helical content. Moreover, transmission electron‐microscopy reveals that Rz–Rz1 complexes form large rod‐shaped structures which, although heterogeneous, exhibit periodicities that may reflect coiled‐coil bundling as well as a long dimension that matches the width of the periplasm. A model is proposed suggesting that the formation of such bundles depends on the removal of the PG and underlies the Rz–Rz1 dependent disruption of the OM. 相似文献

From 2011 to 2013, Texas experienced its worst drought in recorded history. This event provided a unique natural experiment to assess species‐specific responses to extreme drought and mortality of four co‐occurring woody species: Quercus fusiformis, Diospyros texana, Prosopis glandulosa, and Juniperus ashei. We examined hypothesized mechanisms that could promote these species' diverse mortality patterns using postdrought measurements on surviving trees coupled to retrospective process modelling. The species exhibited a wide range of gas exchange responses, hydraulic strategies, and mortality rates. Multiple proposed indices of mortality mechanisms were inconsistent with the observed mortality patterns across species, including measures of the degree of iso/anisohydry, photosynthesis, carbohydrate depletion, and hydraulic safety margins. Large losses of spring and summer whole‐tree conductance (driven by belowground losses of conductance) and shallower rooting depths were associated with species that exhibited greater mortality. Based on this retrospective analysis, we suggest that species more vulnerable to drought were more likely to have succumbed to hydraulic failure belowground. 相似文献
