The population morphometric variation of the endangered freshwater killifish (Fundulus lima) was evaluated and compared with that of its euryhaline coastal relatives (F. parvipinnis parvipinnis and F. p. brevis) on the basis of 384 specimens from the Baja California peninsula, Mexico. by means of discriminant function analysis (DFA). Sixteen body distances were significant to distinguish two groups of populations
for F. lima: a first group represented by the Bebelamas and San Javier basins, and second group composed by the basins of San Ignacio,
La Purísima, San Luis, San Pedro and Las Pocitas. When all freshwater and coastal populations were compared, the southernmost
population of F. lima (Las Pocitas) showed a higher morphometric similarity with the southern coastal subspecies (F. p. brevis), while another southern population (San Pedro) had an intermediate position between the freshwater and coastal forms. This

The absence of a pelagic larval stage and brood care has evolved very few times in coral reef fishes. Damselfishes, a widely represented group with more than 380 species, includes only three such species, the monotypic Acanthochromis polyacanthus, and the two Altrichthys species, Altrichthys azurelineatus and Altrichthys curatus. In a recent study, Cooper et al. provided a comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis for the damselfish family, based on mitochondrial and nuclear sequences, with more than 100 species that included all extant genera (Cooper et al., 2009). A. polyacanthus and sequences from formalin-preserved tissue of A. curatus did not cluster together, indicating that brood care may have evolved independently twice in damselfishes. Here, we use mitochondrial and nuclear molecular markers from fresh specimens of both Altrichthys species. We found that Altrichthys and Acanthochromis are closest relatives, which suggests that brood care may have evolved only once in damselfishes. Due to the limited geographic range of Altrichthys (western Philippines) and the abundant presence of Acanthochromis in that region, we also suggest that brood care may have originated in that region. 相似文献

IgE recognition of panallergens having highly conserved sequence regions, structure, and function and shared by inhalant and food allergen sources is often observed.Methods
We evaluated the IgE recognition profile of profilins (Bet v 2, Cyn d 12, Hel a 2, Hev b 8, Mer a 1, Ole e 2, Par j 3, Phl p 12, Pho d 2), PR-10 proteins (Aln g 1, Api g 1, Bet v 1.0101, Bet v 1.0401, Cor a 1, Dau c 1 and Mal d 1.0108) and tropomyosins (Ani s 3, Der p 10, Hel as 1, Pen i 1, Pen m 1, Per a 7) using the Immuno-Solid phase Allergen Chip (ISAC) microarray system. The three panallergen groups were well represented among the allergenic molecules immobilized on the ISAC. Moreover, they are distributed in several taxonomical allergenic sources, either close or distant, and have a route of exposure being either inhalation or ingestion.Results
3,113 individuals (49.9% female) were selected on the basis of their reactivity to profilins, PR-10 or tropomyosins. 1,521 (48.8%) patients were reactive to profilins (77.6% Mer a 1 IgE+), 1,420 (45.6%) to PR-10 (92.5% Bet v 1 IgE+) and 632 (20.3%) to tropomyosins (68% Der p 10 IgE+). A significant direct relationship between different representative molecules within each group of panallergens was found. 2,688 patients (86.4%) recognized only one out of the three distinct groups of molecules as confirmed also by hierarchical clustering analysis.Conclusions
Unless exposed to most of the allergens in the same or related allergenic sources, a preferential IgE response to distinct panallergens has been recorded. Allergen microarray IgE testing increases our knowledge of the IgE immune response and related epidemiological features within and between homologous molecules better describing the patients'' immunological phenotypes. 相似文献95.

We studied circulating levels of endothelin-1, catecholamines and nitric oxide after a mental arithmetic test in 14 patients with early ischemic lesions of the extremities due to systemic sclerosis and slightly impaired peripheral vascular flow. The test induced an increase (P < 0.01) in blood pressure, heart rate, endothelin-1 and catecholamine levels, whereas it did not change the low basal levels of nitric oxide. In healthy subjects (n = 20) the test significantly (P < 0.01) decreased endothelin-1 without affecting nitric oxide. The low basal levels of nitric oxide and the high plasma concentration of endothelin-1 after psychological stress cannot be explained by an impaired release from the limited ischemic lesions alone. This suggests a diffuse microvascular derangement that aggravates the course of peripheral microvascular ischemic lesions. 相似文献

In a recent paper in these pages, Cohen et al. search for isochores in the human genome, based on a system of attributes that they assign to isochores. The putative isochores that they find and choose for presentation are almost all below 45% GC and cover only about 41% of the genome. Closer inspection reveals that the authors' methodology systematically loses GC-rich isochores because it does not anticipate the considerable fluctuations and corresponding long-range correlations that characterize mammalian DNA and that are highest in GC-rich DNA. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are potent inducers of oxidative damage and have been implicated in the regulation of specific cellular functions, including apoptosis. Mitochondrial ROS increase markedly after proapoptotic signals, though the biological significance and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain undetermined. P66Shc is a genetic determinant of life span in mammals, which regulates ROS metabolism and apoptosis. We report here that p66Shc is a redox enzyme that generates mitochondrial ROS (hydrogen peroxide) as signaling molecules for apoptosis. For this function, p66Shc utilizes reducing equivalents of the mitochondrial electron transfer chain through the oxidation of cytochrome c. Redox-defective mutants of p66Shc are unable to induce mitochondrial ROS generation and swelling in vitro or to mediate mitochondrial apoptosis in vivo. These data demonstrate the existence of alternative redox reactions of the mitochondrial electron transfer chain, which evolved to generate proapoptotic ROS in response to specific stress signals. 相似文献

The circadian clock, influencing many biological processes, has been demonstrated to modulate levels of specific coagulation factors, but its impact on the coagulation efficiency is unknown. In a mouse model, the authors evaluated the temporal variations in the initial rate of activated factor X (FXa) and thrombin generation. Upon coagulation activation through the FVIIa-TF pathway (extrinsic activation), both parameters showed rhythmic variations with a significant peak at ZT 12, the light-to-dark transition. In mice subjected to a 6-h delayed light-dark cycle, the peak was shifted as expected. These cyclic oscillations were also observed in constant darkness, thus demonstrating, for the first time, the existence of strong circadian rhythms of the initial rate of either FXa or thrombin generation activity levels. These circadian variations overlapped with those that have been recently described in factor VII (FVII) activity. The peak of FXa generation activity was simulated by the addition of purified human FVII, thus indicating that circadian variations in FVII activity are important determinants of the circadian rhythm of the procoagulant cascade efficiency. These findings help to elucidate the complex control on the coagulation process and might contribute in explaining the temporal variations in the frequency of cardiovascular events observed in humans. 相似文献

The manifestations of Parkinson's disease are caused by reduced dopaminergic innervation of the striatum. Loss-of-function mutations in the DJ-1 gene cause early-onset familial parkinsonism. To investigate a possible role for DJ-1 in the dopaminergic system, we generated a mouse model bearing a germline disruption of DJ-1. Although DJ-1(-/-) mice had normal numbers of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, evoked dopamine overflow in the striatum was markedly reduced, primarily as a result of increased reuptake. Nigral neurons lacking DJ-1 were less sensitive to the inhibitory effects of D2 autoreceptor stimulation. Corticostriatal long-term potentiation was normal in medium spiny neurons of DJ-1(-/-) mice, but long-term depression (LTD) was absent. The LTD deficit was reversed by treatment with D2 but not D1 receptor agonists. Furthermore, DJ-1(-/-) mice displayed hypoactivity in the open field. Collectively, our findings suggest an essential role for DJ-1 in dopaminergic physiology and D2 receptor-mediated functions. 相似文献

With 18 closely related endemic species that radiated in a diversity of ecological niches, the California surfperches (Embiotocidae) species flock is a good candidate for the study of sympatric speciation. Resource partitioning has been suggested as an important driving force in the radiation of the surfperch family. Within the family, two congeneric sister species, Embiotoca jacksoni and E. lateralis, are known to compete strongly for a preferred single food resource and may be used as a model of ecological interactions for the family. Along the California coast, the distribution of the two species differs. Embiotoca jacksoni has a continuous range, whereas E. lateralis shows a disjunction with a distribution gap in the Southern California Bight. Two hypotheses may explain this disjunct distribution. Ecological competition may have displaced E. lateralis in favor of E. jacksoni. Alternatively, a common vicariant event may have separated the species into northern and southern populations, followed by secondary contact in E. jacksoni but not in E. lateralis. The two hypotheses predict different phylogeographic and demographic signatures. Using a combined phylogeographic and coalescent approach based on mitochondrial control region data, we show that vicariance can only account for a portion of the observed divergences. Our results are compatible with a significant role played by ecological competition in the southern range of the species. 相似文献
