Life-history traits and ecological conditions have an important influence on primate social systems. Most of what we know about the life-history patterns and social structure of gorillas comes from studies of eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei sp.), which live under dramatically different ecological conditions compared to western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla sp.). In this paper we present new data on western gorilla social structure and life histories from four study sites, and make comparisons with eastern gorilla populations. Data were obtained from two study sites with gorilla groups undergoing the habituation process (Lossi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Bai Hokou, Central African Republic) and two "bai" studies (Maya Nord and Mbeli Bai, Republic of Congo). The size and structure of these groups were similar to those seen in eastern gorillas. However, differences in the occurrence of various group transitions (group formations, changes between one-male and multimale composition, and group disintegrations) exist, and western gorillas notably exhibit much higher rates of male emigration and correspondingly fewer multimale groups compared to mountain gorillas. Certain phenomena have been observed only rarely, including predation by leopards. The preliminary data show no significant differences in birth rates between western gorillas and mountain gorillas. The ecological variability across gorilla habitats likely explains the flexibility in the social system of gorillas, but we need more information on the social relationships and ecology of western gorillas to elucidate the causes for the similarities and differences between western and eastern gorillas on the levels of individuals, social groups, and population dynamics.  相似文献

I present data on home-range use and types of intergroup encounters for one group (Apollo) of western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) from a new study site in the Republic of Congo. The total home-range size of the focal group, which I calculated by superimposing a 100 m x 100 m grid over the mapped daily path traveled, was 11 km2. The majority (73%) of the group's home range was used exclusively, although at the periphery it overlapped with the ranges of three other groups. Most encounters (86%) with other groups (n = 14) took place in the periphery of the home range, and appeared to involve access to fruit trees. The focal group silverback's encounters with solitary silverbacks occurred throughout the focal group's home range, did not involve access to fruit, and typically resulted in aggressive or avoidance behavior. The focal group silverback's response to other group males was more varied: it included tolerance (64%), avoidance (14%), and aggression (21%), and was dependent upon the identity of the extragroup male. The focal group exhibited an unusual form of tolerant behavior toward some other groups by occasionally forming "nesting supergroups" (two groups nested together overnight at distances of 30-50 m). The western gorillas at Lossi were somewhat fluid in their grouping. Subgrouping and supergrouping occurred, although more infrequently than reported previously, and with a new twist: subgrouping did not necessarily require a silverback's presence. I stress the need for intraspecific comparisons and more complete data sets on western gorilla social organization.  相似文献

Microbial activity in spent nuclear fuel pools which contain ultrapure and radioactive water has been previously observed. The aim of the present research was to isolate and identify the microorganisms attached to the nuclear pool wall of a Spanish nuclear power plant. Amplification of 16S rDNA fragments from the culturable microorganisms by PCR using universal primers for the domain 'Bacteria', followed by Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis analysis revealed the presence of six different bacteria. The complete gene for 16S rDNA of each one was sequenced and identified as belonging to three different phylogenetic groups, viz. beta-Proteobacteria, Actinomycetales and the Bacillus/Staphylococcus group. A fungus was also found and identified as Aspergillus fumigatus by sequencing the D2 region of the large subunit rDNA gene. The isolation of these microorganisms in oligotrophic and radioactive conditions is of great interest due to the possibility of their use in bioremediation processes of radionuclide-contaminated environments.  相似文献

Stimulation of isolated rat Kupffer cells by viable Leptospira interrogans, Treponema pallidum and Borrelia garinii elicited cellular responses resulting in the release of different tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) levels, depending on the spirochetes. L. interrogans induced TNF-alpha levels higher than those achieved with B. garinii and T. pallidum (in this order), but lower than the levels achieved with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In contrast to L. interrogans, pretreatment of borreliae and treponemes with polymyxin B did not substantially diminish the ability of B. garinii and T. pallidum to stimulate Kupffer cells. Purified T. pallidum lipoproteins TpN47, TmpA, TpN15-TpN17, and B. garinii OspA induced TNF-alpha responses comparable to that achieved by LPS. This response was almost insensitive to the action of polymyxin B.  相似文献

The formation of the stratum corneum in the epidermis of the reptile Sphenodon punctatus has been studied by histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural methods. Sulfhydryl groups are present in the mesos and pre-alpha-layer but disappear in the keratinized beta-layer and in most of the mature alpha-layer. This suggests a complete cross-linking of keratin filaments. Tyrosine increases in keratinized layers, especially in the beta-layer. Arginine is present in living epidermal layers, in the presumptive alpha-layer, but decreases in keratinized layers. Histidine is present in corneous layers, especially in the intermediate region between the alpha- and a new beta-layer, but disappears in living layers. It is unknown whether histidine-rich proteins are produced in the intermediate region. Small keratohyalin-like granules are incorporated in the intermediate region. The plane of shedding, as confirmed from the study on molts, is located along the basalmost part of the alpha-layer and may involve the degradation of whole cells or cell junctions of the intermediate region. A specific shedding complex, like that of lizards and snakes, is not formed in tuatara epidermis. AE1-, AE2-, or AE3-positive alpha-keratins are present in different epidermal layers with a pattern similar to that previously described in reptiles. The AE1 antibody stains the basal and, less intensely, the first suprabasal layers. Pre-keratinized, alpha- and beta-layers, and the intermediate region remain unlabeled. The AE2 antibody stains suprabasal and forming alpha- and beta-layers, but does not stain the basal and suprabasal layers. In the mature beta-layer the immunostaining disappears. The AE3 antibody stains all epidermal layers but disappears in alpha- and beta-layers. Immunolocalization for chick scale beta-keratins labels the forming and mature beta-layer, but disappears in the mesos and alpha-layer. This suggests the presence of common epitopes in avian and reptilian beta-keratins. Low molecular weight alpha-keratins present in the basal layer are probably replaced by keratins of higher molecular weight in keratinizing layers (AE2-positive). This keratin pattern was probably established since the beginning of land adaptation in amniotes.  相似文献

The fine structure of hairs in the most ancient extant mammals, the monotremes, is not known. The present study analyzes the ultrastructure and immunocytochemistry for keratins, trichohyalin, and transglutaminase in monotreme hairs and compares their distribution with that present in hairs of the other mammals. The overall ultrastructure of the hair and the distribution of keratins is similar to that of marsupial and placental hairs. Acidic and basic keratins mostly localize in the outer root sheath. The inner root sheath (IRS) comprises 4-8 cell layers in most hairs and forms a tile-like sheath around the hair shaft. No cytological distinction between the Henle and Huxley layers is seen as cells become cornified about at the same time. Externally to the last cornified IRS cells (homologous to the Henle layer), the companion layer contains numerous bundles of keratin. Occasionally, some granules in the companion layer show immunoreactivity for the trichohyalin antibody. This further suggests that the IRS in monotremes is ill-defined, as the companion layer of placental hairs studied so far does not express trichohyalin. A cross-reactivity with an antibody against sheep trichohyalin is present in the IRS of monotremes, suggesting conserved epitopes across mammalian trichohyalin. Trichohyalin granules in the IRS consist of a framework of immunolabeled coarse filaments of 10-12 nm. The latter assume a parallel orientation and lose the immunoreactivity in fully cornified cells. Transglutaminase immunolabeling is diffuse among trichohyalin granules and among the parallel 10-12 nm filaments of maturing inner root cells. Transglutaminase is present where its substrate, trichohyalin, is modified as matrix protein. Cornification of IRS is different from that of hair fiber cuticle and from that of the cornified layer of the epidermis above the follicle. The different consistency among cuticle, IRS, and corneous layer of the epidermis determines separation between hair fiber, IRS, and epidermis. This allows the hair to exit on the epidermal surface after shedding from the IRS and epidermis. Based on comparative studies of reptilian and mammalian skin, a speculative hypothesis on the evolution of the IRS and hairs from the skin of synapsid reptiles is presented.  相似文献
