We study a system of two integrodifierential equations which models the evolution of a biotic species feeding on an abiotic resource. We also consider nutrient recycling with time delay. By Hopf bifurcation theory we prove the existence of stable oscillations for a range of values of the input of nutrients.Work performed within the activity of the research group Evolution Equations and Physico-Mathematical Applications, M.P.I. Populations living in two different regions of Nepal have been studied. The first region (the Kali Gandaki valley) is inhabited mainly by Magars, Gurungs, Thakalis and Chetris. It has been found that they exhibit different ABO gene frequencies though living in very close areas and often in the same villages. Thus they are still genetically different entities besides being ethnically distinguishable from each other.The second region examined in the present survey (the Solu Khumbu) is inhabited by Sherpas. They were studied for markers not analysed in a previous research, namely for ABO, UMPK, PGD, GLO and LDH.  相似文献

Biological pest control is becoming increasingly important for sustainable agriculture. Although many species of natural enemies are already being used commercially, efficient biological control of various pests is still lacking, and there is a need for more biocontrol agents. In this review, we focus on predatory soil mites, their role as natural enemies, and their biocontrol potential, mainly in vegetable and ornamental crops, with an emphasis on greenhouse systems. These predators are still underrepresented in biological control, but have several advantages compared to predators living on above-ground plant parts. For example, predatory soil mites are often easy and affordable to mass rear, as most of them are generalist predators, which also means that they may be used against various pests and can survive periods of pest scarcity by feeding on alternative prey or food. Many of them can also endure unfavourable conditions, making it easier for them to establish in various crops. Based on the current literature, we show that they have potential to control a variety of pests, both in greenhouses and in the field. However, more research is needed to fully understand and appreciate their potential as biocontrol agents. We review and discuss several methods to increase their efficiency, such as supplying them with alternative food and changing soil/litter structure to enable persistence of their populations. We conclude that predatory soil mites deserve more attention in future studies to increase their application in agricultural crops.

Industrial ecology (IE) methodologies, such as input/output or material flow analysis and life cycle assessment (LCA), are often used for the environmental evaluation of circular economy strategies. Up to now, an approach that utilizes these methods in a systematic, integrated framework for a holistic assessment of a geographic region's sustainable circular economy potential has been lacking. The approach developed in this study (IE4CE approach) combines IE methodologies to determine the environmental impact mitigation potential of circular economy strategies for a defined geographic region. The approach foresees five steps. First, input/output analysis helps identify sectors with high environmental impacts. Second, a refined analysis is conducted using material flow and LCA. In step 3, circular strategies are used for scenario design and evaluated in step 4. In step 5, the assessment results are compiled and compared across sectors. The approach was applied to a case study of Switzerland, analyzing 8 sectors and more than 30 scenarios in depth. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) from waste incineration, biogas and cement production, food waste prevention in households, hospitality and production, and the increased recycling of plastics had the highest mitigation potential. Most of the scenarios do not influence each other. One exception is the CCS scenarios: waste avoidance scenarios decrease the reduction potential of CCS. A combination of scenarios from different sectors, including their impact on the CCS scenario potential, led to an environmental impact mitigation potential of 11.9 Mt CO2-eq for 2050, which equals 14% of Switzerland's current consumption-based impacts.  相似文献

We studied responses of endothelial and epithelial cells in the thin portion of the air-blood barrier to a rise in interstitial pressure caused by an increase in extravascular water (interstitial edema) obtained in anesthetized rabbits receiving saline infusion (0.5 ml.kg(-1).min(-1) for 3 h). We obtained morphometric analyses of the cells and of their microenvironment (electron microscopy); furthermore, we also studied in lung tissue extracts the biochemical alterations of proteins responsible for signal transduction (PKC, caveolin-1) and cell-cell adhesion (CD31) and of proteins involved in membrane-to-cytoskeleton linkage (alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin). In endothelial cells, we observed a folding of the plasma membrane with an increase in cell surface area, a doubling of plasmalemma vesicular density, and an increase in cell volume. Minor morphological changes were observed in epithelial cells. Edema did not affect the total plasmalemma amount of PKC, beta-tubulin, and caveolin-1, but alpha-tubulin and CD-31 increased. In edema, the distribution of these proteins changed between the detergent-resistant fraction of the plasma membrane (DRF, lipid microdomains) and the rest of the plasma membrane [high-density fractions (HDFs)]. PKC and tubulin isoforms shifted from the DRF to HDFs in edema, whereas caveolin-1 increased in DRF at the expense of a decrease in phosphorylated caveolin-1. The changes in cellular morphology and in plasma membrane composition suggest an early endothelial response to mechanical stimuli arising at the interstitial level subsequently to a modest (approximately 5%) increase in extravascular water.  相似文献

Mitotic checkpoints delay cell cycle progression in response to alterations in the mitotic apparatus, thus ensuring correct chromosome segregation. While improper spindle orientation activates the Bub2/Bfa1-dependent checkpoint in budding yeast, delaying exit from mitosis, lack of bipolar kinetochore-microtubule attachment activates a signal transduction cascade that prevents both anaphase onset and exit from mitosis by inhibiting the Cdc20/APC (Anaphase Promoting Complex)-mediated proteolysis of securin and inactivation of mitotic cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), respectively. Proteolysis of the securin Pdsl is necessary to liberate the separase Esp1, which then triggers sister chromatid separation, whereas inactivation of mitotic CDKs is a prerequisite for exit from mitosis and for starting a new round of DNA replication in the next cell cycle. In budding yeast, this latter checkpoint response involves the proteins Mad1, 2, 3, Bub1 and Bub3, whose vertebrate counterparts localize to unattached kinetochores. Mutations that alter other kinetochore proteins result in mitotic checkpoint activation, while the ndc10-1 mutation not only impairs kinetochore function, but also disrupts the checkpoint response, indicating a role for Ndc10 in this process. Here we present evidence that Ndc10 is not part of the Bub2/Bfa1-dependent pathway, and its role in the checkpoint response might also be different from that of the other Mad and Bub proteins. Indeed, Ndc10, unlike other mitotic checkpoint proteins, is not required for the mitotic block induced by overexpression of the Mpsl protein kinase, which is implicated in mitotic checkpoint control. Furthermore, the delay in mitotic exit caused by non-degradable Pds1, which does not require Mad and Bub proteins, depends on Ndc10 function. We propose that a pathway involving Ndc10 might monitor defects in the mitotic apparatus independently of the Mad and Bub proteins. Since the Espl separase is required for exit from mitosis in both ndc10-1 and nocodazole-treated mad2delta cells, the two signal transduction cascades might ultimately converge on the inactivation of Esp1.  相似文献

Current antiretroviral regimens (HAART) are generally effective in reducing viral replication to undetectable levels and inducing a raise in CD4 T cells. However, in approximately 5 to 15% of patients suppression of viral replication is not followed by an increase in CD4 T cells. Such patients may be at increased risk for opportunistic infections. Here we report the results from a phase II open label randomised trial on 30 patients classified as poor responders to HAART who were either subjected to eight consecutive cycles of selective monocyte apheresis or maintained under HAART alone. The results show that monocyte apheresis results in increased CD4 T cell counts which are maintained for at least 31 weeks after last apheresis. This effect was observed only on patients with complete suppression of viral replication. Other effects of monocyte apheresis included a strong reduction of TNF-alpha production in patients with high baseline levels of this cytokine and activation of resting T cells during the apheresis cycles. In two patients with high cellular HIV DNA load apheresis was followed by a 98% reduction, suggesting purging of infected cells. There was no evidence of increased viral replication during or after the apheresis cycles. The data show that monocyte apheresis is safe, well tolerated and may be indicated in patients who respond poorly to HAART.  相似文献
