Fisheries are known to selectively remove larger and older individuals from wild populations. In sequential hermaphrodites, size-selectivity also becomes ‘sex-selectivity’, as the largest and oldest individuals of a sex-changing population primarily belong to one sex. Plasticity in size-at-sex-change is believed to circumvent the undesirable effects of gamete limitation and low effective population size. Here we present data of two commercially exploited sea bream species in different biogeographic regions, one protandrous (male-first) and one protogynous (female-first), respectively exhibiting spatial and temporal fluctuation in size-at-sex-change. By contrasting the patterns found against recent evidence of similar phenomena in other species, we discuss life-history strategies that favour reproductive success in different environmental scenarios. Size-at-sex-change may be for sequential hermaphrodites as important a life-history parameter as size-at-maturity or age-at-size. Consequently, the demographic consequences of altered size-at-sex-change should be considered explicitly in stock management and assessment.  相似文献

Abstract

The cytopathology of a Potato virus X (PVX) recombinant variant (encoding as fusion of an epitope of immunological interest with the N‐terminus of the coat protein, PVXSmaP18DD) has been compared with that induced by the wild‐type virus (PVX wt) in Nicotiana benthamiana plants. Both PVX wt and PVXSmaP18DD caused similar ultrastructural alterations, characterized by the presence of laminated inclusion components and bulk virus accumulations in mesophyll cells. However, some striking differences were observed not only in the morphology of these accumulations (typically ordered in PVX wt infection and disordered in PVXSmaP18DD infection) but also because the chimeric virus caused peculiar alterations in chloroplasts structure.

The practice of postharvest withering is commonly used to correct quality traits and sugar concentration of high quality wines. To date, changes in the metabolome during the berry maturation process have been well documented; however, the biological events which occur at the protein level have yet to be fully investigated. To gain insight into the postharvest withering process, we studied the protein expression profiles of grape (Corvina variety) berry development focusing on withering utilizing a two-dimensional differential in gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) proteomics approach. Comparative analysis revealed changes in the abundance of numerous soluble proteins during the maturation and withering processes. On a total of 870 detected spots, 90 proteins were differentially expressed during berry ripening/withering and 72 were identified by MS/MS analysis. The majority of these proteins were related to stress and defense activity (30%), energy and primary metabolism (25%), cytoskeleton remodelling (7%), and secondary metabolism (5%). Moreover, this study demonstrates an active modulation of metabolic pathways throughout the slow dehydration process, including de novo protein synthesis in response to the stress condition and further evolution of physiological processes originated during ripening. These data represent an important insight into the withering process in terms of both Vitis germplasm characterization and knowledge which can assist quality improvement.  相似文献

Classical biological control—the introduction of exotic species to permanently control pests—offers an applied framework to test ecological and evolutionary hypotheses derived from invasion biology. One such hypothesis is that intraspecific hybridization can facilitate invasions because hybrids express higher phenotypic mean and/or variance than their parents. We tested this hypothesis using the parasitoid wasp Psyttalia lounsburyi, a candidate biocontrol agent for the olive fly Bactrocera oleae. Under laboratory conditions, we found marked differentiations between two populations of wasps, from South Africa and Kenya, in terms of life history strategies. South African females were better reproducers than Kenyan females, but the opposite was observed for males. Reaction norms showed different effects of developmental temperature on fecundity depending on the genotype. However, neither heterosis nor hybrid breakdown were observed. Hence, in this system, sex-specific effects of hybridization and genotype-by-environment interactions jeopardize any straightforward prediction on the fitness of hybrids. Therefore, our paper contributes to tone down the hybrid advantage hypothesis in invasion biology.  相似文献

Cactus stems, the cladodes of Opuntia spp. cacti, are consumed in Mexico and other countries due to their fresh and herbaceous flavor, and because of their widely known nutraceutical benefits. In order to extend the postharvest life of this vegetable, the effect of a modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) was studied in cactus stems of the cultivar Atlixco stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 20 days under three types of atmospheres: (1) air (passive atmosphere), (2) 5 kPa O2 + 4 kPa CO2, and (3) N2. During storage, the titratable acidity decreased and the color of cladodes became darker and less green; however, the 5 kPa O2 + 4 kPa CO2 atmosphere was able to preserve both quality characteristics. All modified atmospheres reduced weight loss (from 8 to <2%) and the symptoms of chilling injury, and this physiological disorder appeared earlier in controls than in MAP-stored cladodes. The levels of fermentation metabolites were low in all three evaluated atmospheres. Because of this, only cladodes stored under the N2 atmosphere were selected for furthersensory analysis of the MAP effect on odor perception as evaluated by a trained panel. Results indicated that there was no detrimental effect (atypical odors) of MAP on this sensory characteristic. We conclude that cultivar Atlixco is suitable for preservation using MAP technology.  相似文献

Echocardiography has the ability to noninvasively explore hemodynamic variables during pharmacologic or exercise stress test in patients with heart failure. In this review, we detail some important potential applications of stress echocardiography in patients with heart failure. In patients with coronary artery disease and chronic LV dysfunction, dobutamine stress echocardiography is able to distinguish between viable and fibrotic tissue to make adequate clinical decisions. Exercise testing, in combination with echocardiographic monitoring, is a method of obtaining accurate information in the assessment of functional capacity and prognosis. Functional mitral regurgitation is a common finding in patients with dilated and ischaemic cardiomyopathy and stress echocardiography in the form of exercise or pharmacologic protocols can be useful to evaluate the behaviour of mitral regurgitation. It is clinical useful to search the presence of contractile reserve in non ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy such as to screen or monitor the presence of latent myocardial dysfunction in patients who had exposure to cardiotoxic agents. Moreover, in patients with suspected diastolic heart failure and normal systolic function, exercise echocardiography could be able to demonstrate the existence of such dysfunction and determine that it is sufficient to limit exercise tolerance. Finally, in the aortic stenosis dobutamine echocardiography can distinguish severe from non-severe stenosis in patients with low transvalvular gradients and depressed left ventricular function.  相似文献

TCR-alpha and -beta chains are composed of somatically rearranged V, D, and J germline-encoded gene segments that confer Ag specificity. Recent crystallographic analyses revealed that TCR-alpha has more contacts with peptide than TCR-beta, suggesting the possibility that peptide recognition predominantly relies on TCR-alpha. T cells specific for the self Ag Melan-A/MART-1 possess an exceptionally high precursor frequency in human histocompatibility leukocyte Ag-A2 individuals. This provided a unique situation for assessment of the structural relationship between TCR and peptide/MHC ligand at both the pre- and postimmune levels. Molecular and phenotypic analysis of many different Melan-A-specific T cell populations revealed that a structural constraint is imposed on the TCR for engagement with Melan-A peptides presented by HLA-A2, namely the highly preferential use of a particular TCRAV segment, AV2. Examination of CD8 single-positive thymocytes indicated that this preferential use in forming the Melan-A-specific TCR is mainly imposed by intrathymic positive selection. Our data demonstrate a dominant function of TCRAV2 segment in forming the TCR repertoire specific for the human self Ag Melan-A/MART-1 and support the view that Ag recognition is mediated predominantly by TCR-alpha.  相似文献
