An attempt was made using a combination of simple experimental manipulations and videotape recorder (VTR) analysis of bite targets employed to determine whether electroshock-induced attack on anosmic opponents in laboratory mice was an offensive or a defensive behaviour. VTR analysis suggested that ventral surface biting was more evident in this form of attack than in social conflict. Individually- and group-housed males showed similar levels of fighting on exposure to electroshock, but dominant males from pairs showed greater attack than their subordinate partners. Zinc sulphate-induced anosmia, 36 h of food deprivation, castration and lithium chloride treatment reduced electroshock-induced attack. Although significant changes were not obtained, there was some evidence that acute treatment with dexamethasone or ACTH augmented this behaviour. The direction of these changes is similar to that seen with social conflict, and it is suggested that electroshock-induced attack in the mouse (unlike the rat) is largely an aggressive offensive behaviour. The high incidence of ventral surface biting may be a consequence of the upright postures assumed on subjecting the animals to electroshock. 相似文献

A brief schedule of questions, based on empirically derived norms, disclosed significant inaccuracy in temporal orientation in 24% of a groups of nonaphasic patients with brain disease. Conventional neurological examination detected temporal disorientation in only 15%. Patients with bilateral lesions showed a higher frequency of temporal disorientation than did those with inilateral lesions. In a group of 15 aphasic patients, 5 (33%) showed evidence of temporal disorientation according to the test while only 3 (20%) were detected on clinical examination. It is suggested that a schedule of questions scored on the basis of empirically derived norms should be incorporated into the neurological examination to assess temporal orientation. 相似文献

Ecology and morphology are different, and yet in comparative studies of fossil vertebrates the two are often conflated. The macroevolution of Mesozoic marine tetrapods has been explored in terms of morphological disparity, but less commonly using ecological‐functional categories. Here we use ecospace modelling to quantify ecological disparity across all Mesozoic marine tetrapods. We document the explosive radiation of marine tetrapod groups in the Triassic and their rapid attainment of high ecological disparity. Late Triassic extinctions led to a marked decline in ecological disparity, and the recovery of ecospace and ecological disparity was sluggish in the Early Jurassic. High levels of ecological disparity were again achieved by the Late Jurassic and maintained during the Cretaceous, when the ecospace became saturated by the Late Cretaceous. Sauropterygians, turtles and ichthyosauromorphs were the largest contributors to ecological disparity. Throughout the Mesozoic, we find that established groups remained ecologically conservative and did not explore occupied or vacant niches. Several parts of the ecospace remained vacant for long spans of time. Newly evolved, radiating taxa almost exclusively explored unoccupied ecospace, suggesting that abiotic releases are needed to empty niches and initiate diversification. In the balance of evolutionary drivers in Mesozoic marine tetrapods, abiotic factors were key to initiating diversification events, but biotic factors dominated the subsequent generation of ecological diversity. 相似文献

Capsule The body condition of nestling Yellowhammers was negatively correlated with the amount of cereal grain in the diet. This supports the hypothesis that cereal grain is an inferior nestling food relative to invertebrates. Cereal grain is frequently provisioned to nestlings in a range of bunting species breeding on farmland, suggesting that invertebrates may be limiting in these habitats. 相似文献

Pareiasaurs were important medium‐ to large‐sized herbivores in the Middle and Late Permian, some 268–252 Ma. They are best known from abundant remains of several taxa found in South Africa and Russia, with isolated finds from other parts of the world. Six genera and species of pareiasaurs have been described from China, and yet they have not been reviewed. Of these six, Tsiyuania may be a synonym of Honania, but this taxon is not further considered here. The other four, which were named for separate finds from the Sunjiagou Formation (Changhsingian, 254–252 Ma), show considerable similarities. Despite earlier suggestions, there are no convincing anatomical characters to distinguish Shihtienfenia, Shansisaurus, and Huanghesaurus, and these three genera are synonymized as Shihtienfenia permica Young & Yeh, 1963. The fourth taxon, Sanchuansaurus pygmaeus Gao, 1989, shows distinctly different teeth from those of Huanghesaurus (= Shihtienfenia), and was about one‐third of the size, so it is retained as a second valid pareiasaur from the Chinese latest Permian. Phylogenetic analysis confirms the validity of these two taxa, with Sanchuansaurus belonging among the derived forms, close to Elginiidae, and with Shihtienfenia associated with Pumiliopareiasauria and Pareiasuchus. 相似文献

Lyme arthritis (LA), a late disease manifestation of Borrelia burgdorferi infection, usually resolves with antibiotic therapy. However, some patients develop proliferative synovitis lasting months to several years after spirochetal killing, called postinfectious LA. In this study, we phenotyped haematopoietic and stromal cell populations in the synovial lesion ex vivo and used these findings to generate an in vitro model of LA using patient‐derived fibroblast‐like synoviocytes (FLS). Ex vivo analysis of synovial tissue revealed high abundance of IFNγ‐producing T cells and NK cells. Similar to marked IFNγ responses in tissue, postinfectious LA synovial fluid also had high levels of IFNγ. HLA‐DR‐positive FLS were present throughout the synovial lesion, particularly in areas of inflammation. FLS stimulated in vitro with B. burgdorferi, which were similar to conditions during infection, expressed 68 genes associated primarily with innate immune activation and neutrophil recruitment. In contrast, FLS stimulated with IFNγ, which were similar to conditions in the postinfectious phase, expressed >2,000 genes associated with pathogen sensing, inflammation, and MHC Class II antigen presentation, similar to the expression profile in postinfectious synovial tissue. Furthermore, costimulation of FLS with B. burgdorferi and IFNγ induced greater expression of IL‐6 and other innate immune response proteins and genes than with IFNγ stimulation alone. These results suggest that B. burgdorferi infection, in combination with IFNγ, initiates the differentiation of FLS into a highly inflammatory phenotype. We hypothesise that overexpression of IFNγ by lymphocytes within synovia perpetuates these responses in the postinfectious period, causing proliferative synovitis and stalling appropriate repair of damaged tissue. 相似文献
