When host species colonize new areas, the parasite assemblage infecting the hosts might change, with some parasite species being lost and others newly acquired. These changes would likely lead to novel selective forces on both host and its parasites. We investigated the avian blood parasites in the passerine bird community on the mid-Atlantic island of S?o Miguel, Azores, a bird community originating from continental Europe. The presence of haemosporidian blood parasites belonging to the genera Haemoproteus, Plasmodium, and Leucocytozoon was assessed using polymerase chain reaction. We found two Plasmodium lineages and two Leucocytozoon lineages in 11 bird species (84% of all breeding passerine species) on the island. These lineages were unevenly distributed across bird species. The Eurasian Blackbird (Turdus merula) was the key-host species (total parasite prevalence of 57%), harboring the main proportion of parasite infections. Except for Eurasian Blackbirds, all bird species had significantly lower prevalence and parasite diversity compared to their continental populations. We propose that in evolutionary novel bird communities, single species may act as key hosts by harboring the main part of the parasite fauna from which parasites "leak" into the other species. This would create very different host-parasite associations in areas recently colonized by hosts as compared to in their source populations.  相似文献

Hybridization can drive the convergence of territorial and sexual signals. However, non-genetic processes such as competition, environment matching, or cultural transmission, also generate this pattern. We investigated the effect of hybridization on song convergence between two interspecifically territorial warblers in a moving hybrid zone. We confirmed song convergence in each species. Using an AFLP-based genetic index, we detected an effect of genetics on song convergence in Hippolais polyglotta, the expanding species. Evidence was weaker for H. icterina, the receding species. In moving zones, introgression is expected to be larger in the expanding species than in the receding. Thus, the asymmetric contribution of the genetic index to convergence was consistent with expectations for genetically determined traits in moving hybrid zones, and the observed introgression pattern of AFLP markers. However, the geographical location of individuals had an effect on song variation too when genetics was accounted for, suggesting that convergence also has non-genetic explanations. We examine the possible role of alternative processes to that of hybridization and discuss their conflicting effects on reinforcement and hybrid zone dynamics.  相似文献

In patchily distributed species dispersal connects local populations into metapopulations. Reliable quantifications of dispersal are therefore crucial to understanding the population dynamics and genetic structure of such metapopulation systems. The great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) inhabits eutrophic lakes and has a patchy breeding distribution. In this study we investigated the dispersal pattern of the great reed warbler based on an extensive capture-recapture effort covering a large census area (22,500 km2). At two adjacent breeding sites (10 km apart) in southern Central Sweden, the "main study area", we ringed the majority of adult and nestling great reed warblers between 1992 and 1999. In 1998 and 1999, we opportunistically searched for territorial males at the majority of the Swedish breeding sites, and were able to examine about 56% of all males in the region. Analyses of recaptured males demonstrated that philopatry predominated. Sixty-nine percent of the recruiting nestlings returned to breed in the main study area (their natal area), and 92% of the resighted adults were found at the same breeding locality in both study years. Breeding dispersal was significantly more restricted than natal dispersal. Additional data on natal and breeding dispersal within the main study area in 1992-1999 suggested that females were as philopatric as males. The overall high level of philopatry, with only occasional longer dispersal distances documented, yielded a root-mean-square dispersal distance of 33 km per generation. High philopatry, short dispersal distances and similar dispersal patterns of male and female great reed warblers contrast the findings among birds in general, but conform to data of species having patchy breeding habitat and isolated populations. Restricted dispersal suggests limited gene flow even among several Swedish populations, which is in line with some previous findings of the population ecology of the great reed warbler: (1) structured mtDNA lineages among European populations; (2) small-scale population differences in song patterns; and (3) low genetic variation and occurrence of inbreeding depression in our main study population.  相似文献

The DNA-fingerprinting technique was used to find the true pedigrees and to detect the overall genetic similarity between mates of great reed warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) at an isolated breeding site in Sweden. The study covered 4 yr preceded by 3 yr when almost all adults and nestlings in the study area had been banded. DNA fingerprinting revealed that the putative father had sired 97% of the young (N = 455). The mate's genetic similarity, revealed as the proportion of bands shared in restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns, was high compared with other species of wild birds. Also, band sharing was higher between mates native to the area than between pairs in which the female was experimentally introduced from a distant breeding site. Hatching success of eggs was negatively correlated with the degree of genetic similarity between the mates, whereas pedigree data, up to the level of great-grandparents, clearly demonstrated an absence of close inbreeding. These are the first data showing a significant fitness cost associated with the choice of a mate that has high genetic similarity, even if it is not a close kin. This cost might be caused by generalized negative consequences of genomewide inbreeding in the present study, possibly accentuated by recent population bottlenecks.  相似文献

The avian haemosporidian parasite Haemoproteus majoris has been reported to infect a wide range of passerine birds throughout the Holarctic ecozone. Five cytochrome b (cyt b) lineages have been described as belonging to the morphological species H. majoris, and these form a tight phylogenetic cluster together with 13 undescribed lineages that differ from each other by < 1.2% in sequence divergence. Records in a database (MalAvi) that contains global findings of haemosporidian lineages generated by universal primers suggest that these lineages vary substantially in host distribution. We confirm this pattern in a data set collected at Lake Kvismaren, Sweden, where three of the generalist lineages have local transmission. However, whether these lineages represent intraspecific mitochondrial diversity or clusters of cryptic species has previously not been examined. In this study, we developed novel molecular markers to amplify the partial segments of four nuclear genes to determine the level of genetic diversity and gene phylogenies among the five morphologically described cyt b lineages of H. majoris. All five cyt b lineages were strongly associated with unique nuclear alleles at all four nuclear loci, indicating that each mitochondrial lineage represents a distinct biological species. Within lineages, there was no apparent association between nuclear alleles and host species, indicating that they form genetically unstructured populations across multiple host species.  相似文献

Malaria parasites can have strong effects on the population dynamics and evolution of migratory bird species. In many species, parasite transmission occurs on the wintering grounds, but studies to determine the consequences of infection have taken place during the breeding season, when malaria parasites circulate at chronic levels. We examined the predictors of malarial infections for great reed warblers during the northern winter in Africa, where active parasite transmission is thought to occur and naïve individuals experience acute infections. Counter to expectations, we found that winter infection intensities were lower than those encountered on the breeding grounds. One potential explanation is that reduced immune function during breeding allows parasites to persist at higher chronic intensities. We found no relationships between the incidence or intensity of infection on condition (as measured by scaled mass index, plasma metabolites, and feather corticosterone), spring migration departure dates, or home range sizes. We also tested a prediction of the Hamilton–Zuk hypothesis and found that male ornament (song) quality was unrelated to parasitic infection status. Overall, our results provide the first evidence that long‐distance migrants captured on their wintering grounds are in the chronic stage of infection, and suggest that winter studies may fare no better than breeding studies at determining the costs of acute malarial infection for great reed warblers.  相似文献

—The branched-chain amino and ketoacids [i.e. l -leucine, l -isoleucine, l -valine, alpha-ketoisocaproic acid (AKICA), alpha-keto-beta-methylvaleric acid (AKBMVA) and alpha-ketoisovaleric acid (AKIVA)] were administered to mouse strain l fibroblasts in tissue culture in an attempt to study the effects of increased levels of the compounds in an in vitro system. All of these compounds are found to be elevated in the blood of patients with Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD). With AKICA, l -leucine, AKIVA and AKBMVA, there was a decreased growth rate at concentrations of 10 to 30 times the levels found in Maple Syrup Urine Disease. Combined administration of the above six compounds at the maximum blood levels noted in MSUD produced a significantly decreased growth rate. Electron microscopic studies revealed numerous annulate lamellae in cells treated with AKICA and in those treated with a combination of all six MSUD compounds. AKICA-treated cells contained elevated concentrations per cell of free fatty acids, triglycerides, sterols and some classes of phospholipids. Isotope labelling experiments were performed using [U-14C] AKICA and [3H]isoleucine, which were added to l -cell suspension cultures containing various levels of unlabelled AKICA. Labelled AKICA and isoleucine were both taken up by the cells. The net uptake of isoleucine was inhibited by AKICA in concentrations found in MSUD. Folch-Lees extraction of cells treated with labelled AKICA revealed increased 14C counts only in the lower lipid phase. The growth inhibition and annulate lamellae observed with AKICA treatment may be due to an arrest of the cells in phase G1 of the cell growth cycle, possibly due to decreased isoleucine uptake. It is proposed that a similarly-mediated arrest in the proliferation of oligodendroglial cells during the critical period of myelination gliosis might account for the myelination abnormalities reported in MSUD.  相似文献

In vitro effects of human peripheral blood monocytes, peripheral blood monocyte-derived macrophages, and spleen mononuclear phagocytes on Toxoplasma gondii were studied. In almost all instances, over 80% of human monocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages infected with Toxoplasma in vitro destroyed the organism. Degeneration of intracellular Toxoplasma was not due to decreased viability of organisms in the challenge inoculum. Human monocytes did not elaborate into the culture medium substances which altered the capacity of Toxoplasma to survive and replicate within mouse macrophages. The early reduction in intracellular Toxoplasma was not affected by inhibitors of various intracellular processes or by diseases associated with altered cellular immunity (sarcoidosis, infectious mononucleosis, or lymphoma.) The Toxoplasma that remained after 6 hr within human monocytes and macrophages multiplied. This multiplication was observed both microscopically and in a radioassay which detects uptake of [3H]uracil or [3H]deoxyuridine into nucleic acids of intracellular Toxoplasma. Intracellular Toxoplasma in monocytes cultured with poly(I:C) or in monocyte-derived macrophages cultured with lymphokines showed decreased uptake of radiolabeled precursors into nucleic acids of intracellular Toxoplasma. Treatment of monocytes with endotoxin did not alter nucleic acid synthesis of surviving intracellular Toxoplasma. These results suggest that human mononuclear phagocytes in peripheral blood and in tissue (spleen) have the capacity to eliminate a large percentage of the Toxoplasma that they ingest or that invade them. The inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis of remaining Toxoplasma by exposure of monocyte-derived macrophages to lymphokines suggests that lymphocyte products may be important for elimination of the Toxoplasma that remain and multiply within a small proportion of mononuclear phagocytes.  相似文献

The development of gut microbiota during ontogeny is emerging as an important process influencing physiology, immunity and fitness in vertebrates. However, knowledge of how bacteria colonize the juvenile gut, how this is influenced by changes in the diversity of gut bacteria and to what extent this influences host fitness, particularly in nonmodel organisms, is lacking. Here we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to describe the successional development of the faecal microbiome in ostriches (Struthio camelus, n = 66, repeatedly sampled) over the first 3 months of life and its relationship to growth. We found a gradual increase in microbial diversity with age that involved multiple colonization and extinction events and a major taxonomic shift in bacteria that coincided with the cessation of yolk absorption. Comparisons with the microbiota of adults (n = 5) revealed that the chicks became more similar in their microbial diversity and composition to adults as they aged. There was a five‐fold difference in juvenile growth during development, and growth during the first week of age was strongly positively correlated with the abundance of the genus Bacteroides and negatively correlated with Akkermansia. After the first week, the abundances of six phylogenetically diverse families (Peptococcaceae, S24‐7, Verrucomicrobiae, Anaeroplasmataceae, Streptococcaceae, Methanobacteriaceae) were associated with subsequent reductions in chick growth in an age‐specific and transient manner. These results have broad implications for our understanding of the development of gut microbiota and its associations with animal growth.  相似文献
