The antifouling activity of extracts (aqueous, ethanol, and dichloromethane) of 9 marine macroalgae against bacteria, fungi, diatoms, macroalgal spores, mussel phenoloxidase activity, and barnacle cypris larvae has been investigated in relation to season in bimonthly samples from the Bay of Concarneau (France). Of the extracts tested, 48.2% were active against at least one of the fouling organisms, and of these extracts, 31.2% were seasonally active with a peak of activity in summer corresponding to maximal values for water temperature, light intensity, and fouling pressure, and 17% were active throughout the year. This seasonal activity may be adaptive as it coincides with maximal fouling pressure in the Bay of Concarneau. Dichloromethane extracts of Rhodophyceae were the most active in the antifouling assays.  相似文献

Assessment of right ventricular (RV) contractility from end-systolic pressure-volume relationships (ESPVR) is difficult due to problems in measuring RV instantaneous volume and to effects of changes in RV preload or afterload. We therefore investigated in anesthetized dogs whether RV ESPVR and contractility can be determined without measuring RV volume and without changing RV preload or afterload. The maximal RV pressure of isovolumic beats (P(max)) was predicted from isovolumic portions of RV pressure during ejecting beats and compared with P(max) measured during the first beat after pulmonary artery clamping. In RV pressure-volume loops obtained from RV pressure and integrated pulmonary arterial flow, end-systolic elastance (E(es)) was assessed as the slope of P(max)-derived ESPVR, pulmonary artery effective elastance (E(a)) as the slope of end-diastolic to end-systolic relation, and coupling efficiency as the E(es)-to-E(a) ratio (E(es)/E(a)). Predicted P(max) correlated with observed P(max) (r = 0.98 +/- 0.02). Dobutamine increased E(es) from 1.07 to 2.00 mmHg/ml and E(es)/E(a) from 1.64 to 2.49, and propranolol decreased E(es)/E(a) from 1.64 to 0.91 (all P < 0.05). After adrenergic blockade, preload reduction did not affect E(es), whereas hypoxia and arterial constriction markedly increased E(a) and somewhat increased E(es) due to the Anrep effect. Low preload did not affect E(es)/E(a) and high afterload decreased E(es)/E(a). In conclusion, in the right ventricle 1) P(max) can be calculated from normal beats, 2) P(max) can be used to determine ESPVR without change in load, and 3) P(max)-derived ESPVR can be used to assess ventricular contractility and ventricular-arterial coupling efficiency.  相似文献

By contrast, studies of GABA in vertebrates have concentrated mainly on its role as a neurotransmitter and signaling molecule. By interval mapping of a backcross progeny between New Zealand White (NZW) and C57BL/6 (B6) mice bearing the Y chromosome-linked autoimmune acceleration gene Yaa, we previously identified a genetic locus on mid-chromosome 13, here designated as Sgp3, showing a major effect on the expression of a nephritogenic autoantigen, gp70. In this study, the NZW-derived Sgp3 region was transferred by backcross procedure and marker-assisted selection on the B6 background to produce three independent congenic strains B6.NZW-Sgp3/1, -Sgp3/2, and -Sgp3/3. We show that NZW homozygosity at a single 3 centiMorgans ( approximately 12 megabases (Mb)) interval between markers D13Mit142 and D13Mit254 mediates increased basal serum levels of gp70 in B6.NZW-Sgp3/1 and B6.NZW-Sgp3/2 mice and with a higher degree in males ( approximately 15 micro g/ml) than in females ( approximately 9 micro g/ml) as compared with B6 ( approximately 2 micro g/ml), revealing a gender effect. However, their gp70 levels are still lower than that of NZW mice ( approximately 60 micro g/ml). In addition, B6.NZW-Sgp3/1 and B6.NZW-Sgp3/2 mice showed a moderate 2- to 3-fold increase in serum gp70 in response to LPS, which contrasted with over a 10-fold increase in NZW mice. Although both B6.NZW-Sgp3/1 and B6.NZW-Sgp3/2 mice failed to produce significant amounts of gp70 anti-gp70 immune complexes, unexpectedly, aged B6.NZW-Sgp3/2 congenic males bearing the Yaa gene developed increased titers of IgG autoantibodies to DNA and chromatin. Our data indicate that Sgp3 is involved in a complex process of gp70 production under polygenic control and may provide a significant contribution to lupus susceptibility not only through up-regulation of gp70 autoantigen production but also predisposition to autoimmunity.  相似文献

The glucose transporter 5 (GLUT5)-a specific D-fructose transporter-belongs to a family of facilitating sugar transporters recently enlarged by the human genome sequencing. Prompted by the need to develop specific photolabels of these isoforms, we have studied the interaction of conformationally locked D-fructose and L-sorbose derived 1,3-oxazolidin-2-thiones and 1,3-oxazolidin-2-ones to provide a rational basis for an interaction model. The inhibition properties of the D-fructose transporter GLUT5 by glyco-1,3-oxazolidin-2-thiones and glyco-1,3-oxazolidin-2-ones is now reported. In vitro, the fused-rings systems tested showed an efficient inhibition of GLUT5, thus bringing new insights on the interaction of D-fructose with GLUT5.  相似文献

Red algae are well suited to study the effects of iron deficiency on light-harvesting complex for photosystem I (LHCI), since they are totally devoid of light-harvesting complex for photosystem II (LHCII). Iron starvation results in a reduction of the pigment content, an increase of the fluorescence yield and a new emission band at 705 nm in the 77 K fluorescence emission spectra. These changes reflect the accumulation of uncoupled, aggregated LHCI in iron-depleted cells. Reconnection of LHCI to de novo synthesized reaction center I (RCI) is the first event, which takes place after iron addition. The changes in the aggregation state of LHCI are likely to occur also in brown and green algae.  相似文献

To elucidate the interaction between bacteria and saprophagous Diptera larvae, the amounts of bacteria in leaf litter, individual gut compartments, and feces of three species of Bibionidae (Bibio pomonae, Bibio marci, and Penthetria holosericea), feeding either directly on leaf litter or on fecal pellets produced from leaf litter by larvae of the same species, were assessed by determining total direct counts and viable counts on solid media at different pH. In P. holosericea, the effect of various cultivation temperatures on direct counts of bacteria in individual compartments was also demonstrated. In all species, the amount of bacteria in the anterior mesenteron was lower than in the consumed food, regardless of whether the larvae were feeding on leaf litter or feces, and increased again in the posterior part of the gut. The amount of bacteria in these compartments was generally higher in larvae feeding on feces than in those feeding on leaf litter, whereas the amount of bacteria found in the ceca varied. In B. marci, the amount of bacteria in the mesenteron sections able to grow on alkaline medium (pH 9) was higher than that of bacteria able to grow on slightly acidic medium (pH 5.5) during both the first and the second gut passage. In B. pomonae and P. holosericea, this increase was observed only during the second gut passage. The effect of gut passage in P. holosericea on changes in direct counts of bacteria was more pronounced when the larvae were fed at 5 degrees C as compared to 20 degrees C. Radiolabeled bacteria were digested in the gut and utilized as a source of energy and nutrients by the larvae; digested bacteria represented up to 10% of the material assimilated by the larvae. Lysozyme activity in whole-gut extracts of P. holosericea had a pH optimum of at pH 7, indicating a low in situ activity in the alkaline mesenteron. Proteinase activity, however, had an optimum at pH > 12, suggesting that the digestion of bacteria in the bibionid gut is caused by a combination of digestive proteinases and alkaline pH in the anterior mesenteron.  相似文献

We herein describe the fine mapping of an imprinted QTL with major effect on muscle mass that was previously assigned to distal SSC2p in the pig. The proposed approach exploits linkage disequilibrium in combination with QTL genotyping by marker-assisted segregation analysis. By identifying a haplotype shared by all "Q" chromosomes, we map the QTL to an approximately 250-kb chromosome segment containing INS and IGF2 as the only known paternally expressed genes. This considerably reinforces the candidacy of these genes, justifying their detailed analysis.  相似文献
