Tick‐borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is caused by Borrelia spirochetes transmitted to humans by Argasid soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. We investigated the presence of Ornithodoros ticks in rodent burrows in nine sites of the Gharb region of northwestern Morocco where we recently documented a high incidence of TBRF in humans. We assessed the Borrelia infection rate by nested PCR and sequencing. All sites investigated were colonized by ticks of the Ornithodoros marocanus complex and a high proportion of burrows (38.4%) were found to be infested. Borrelia infections were observed in 6.8% of the ticks tested. Two Borrelia species were identified by sequencing: B. hispanica and B. crocidurae. The discovery in northwestern Morocco of Ornithodoros ticks infected by B. crocidurae represents a 350 km range extension of this Sahelo‐Saharan spirochete in North Africa. The spread of B. crocidurae may be related to the increasing aridity of northwestern Morocco in relation to climate change. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the impact of emotional eliciting pictures on neuromuscular performance during repetitive supramaximal cycling exercises (RSE). In a randomized order, twelve male participants were asked to perform five 6-s cycle sprints (interspaced by 24 s of recovery) on a cycle ergometer in front of neutral, pleasant or unpleasant pictures. During each RSE, mean power output (MPO) and electromyographic activity [root mean square (RMS) and median frequency (MF)] of the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis muscles were analyzed. Neuromuscular efficiency (NME) was calculated as the ratio of MPO to RMS. Higher RMS (232.17 ± 1.17 vs. 201.90 ± 0.47 μV) and MF (68.56 ± 1.78 vs. 64.18 ± 2.17 Hz) were obtained in pleasant compared to unpleasant conditions (p < 0.05). This emotional effect persisted from the first to the last sprint. Higher MPO was obtained in pleasant than in unpleasant conditions (690.65 ± 38.23 vs. 656.73 ± 35.95 W, p < 0.05). However, this emotional effect on MPO was observed only for the two first sprints. NME decreased from the third sprint (p < 0.05), which indicated the occurrence of peripheral fatigue after the two first sprints. These results suggested that, compared with unpleasant pictures, pleasant ones increased the neuromuscular performance during RSE. Moreover, the disappearance of the beneficial effect of pleasant emotion on mechanical output from the third sprint appears to be due to peripheral fatigue. 相似文献

Elevated plasma levels of the acute-phase reactant serum amyloid A (SAA) have been used as a marker and predictor of inflammatory diseases. SAA regulates leukocyte activation; however, it is not known whether it also modulates neutrophil apoptosis, which is critical to the optimal expression and resolution of inflammation. Culture of human neutrophils with SAA (0.1-20 microg/ml) markedly prolonged neutrophil longevity by delaying constitutive apoptosis. SAA evoked concurrent activation of the ERK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways, leading to phosphorylation of BAD at Ser(112) and Ser(136), respectively, and to prevention of collapse of mitochondrial transmembrane potential, cytochrome c release, and caspase-3 activation. These actions were abrogated by pharmacological inhibition of the formyl peptide receptor, ERK or PI3K. Furthermore, aspirin-triggered 15-epi-lipoxin A(4) (15-epi-LXA(4)) and its stable analog 15-epi-16-p-fluorophenoxy-LXA(4), which binds to the same receptor as SAA, effectively overrode the antiapoptosis signal from SAA even when neutrophils were treated with 15-epi-LXA(4) at either 1 or 4 h postculture with SAA. 15-Epi-LXA(4) itself did not affect neutrophil survival and apoptosis. Our results indicate that SAA at clinically relevant concentrations promotes neutrophil survival by suppressing the apoptotic machinery, an effect that can be opposed by 15-epi-LXA(4). The opposing actions of SAA and aspirin-triggered 15-epi-LXA(4) may contribute to the local regulation of exacerbation and resolution of inflammation, respectively. 相似文献

Attention and motor preparation are two intimately linked processes. However, they can be dissociated in the laboratory in order to study their neuronal basis. Behavioral neurophysiology has thus shown that neurons that discharge in relation with attention or with motor preparation (or intention) exist in a variety of brain regions in the monkey, especially the prefrontal and premotor cortices. When examined more carefully, these two regions appear different in both the proportion of cells that respond during attention versus intention, and in the information coded in the so-called "preparatory activity". This activity reflects sensory selection in the prefrontal cortex (spatial attention/memory), motor selection in the premotor cortex. Furthermore, two regions in the dorsal aspect of premotor cortex can be distinguished on the basis of their relative involvement in attention: a rostral (anterior) region, functionally close to prefrontal cortex, and a caudal one, which appears functionally close to motor cortex. Using an experimental design derived from monkey experiments, a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study recently indicated that the functional specialization within the premotor cortex is similar in monkey and man. 相似文献

The D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH) (EC 1.1.1.30) from liver jerboa (Jaculus orientalis), a ketone body converting enzyme in mitochondria, in two populations of mitochondria (heavy and light) has been studied in different jerboa states (euthermic, prehibernating and hibernating). The results reveal: (1) important variations between states in terms of ketones bodies, glucose and lipid levels; (2) significant differences between the BDH of the two mitochondrial populations in term of protein expression and kinetic properties. These results suggest that BDH leads an important conformational change depending on the physiological state of jerboa. This BDH structural change could be the consequence of the lipid composition modifications in inner mitochondrial membrane leading to changes in BDH catalytic properties. 相似文献

Temporary pools are numerous in coastal plains of Atlantic Morocco and have a rich and diverse flora. These habitats are increasingly
under pressure by man impact through grazing by domestic livestock and the development of annual crops in their catchments.
The objectives of this work were to evaluate the species richness and the species composition of the vegetation of a sample
of 30 pools in this region, in order to assess the structure of the vegetation within pools and to evaluate the role of environmental
and anthropogenic factors in their richness and species composition. The results highlighted the species richness of the pools
with 300 species found among which annual species were heavily dominant. The structure of the vegetation varied within pools
according to a topographical/flooding gradient and between pools in relation with the land use in the surrounding areas. Three
vegetation belts were recognized from the centre to the periphery of the pool. The total species richness per pool was not
found significantly related to environmental or anthropogenic factors. The species characteristics of the pools were found
mostly in the centre and their number affected by hydrological factors and land use in the pool and in the surrounding areas.
The species characteristics of woodland habitats and of agriculture crops were found mostly in the peripheral zone. Temporary
pools maintain specific communities of both aquatic and amphibious species, probably because of the selection induced by water
level variations. The peripheral zone, although often dominated by terrestrial species, is clearly interpreted as part of
the pool. It contains amphibious species highly characteristic of the pool for which the irregular flooding is a key environmental

Sludge decontamination removes metals, and then generates biosolids that can be safely recycled in agriculture. The research currently presented is probably one of the initial comparison of the agro-environmental impact of decontaminated versus non-decontaminated sludge. Four different sludge were tested at two rates (80 and 160 kg/ha N), before and after their decontamination by a new process (METIX-AC), and subsequently compared to non-amended and inorganically fertilized soil, for maize cultivation under greenhouse conditions. Results presented in this paper reveal that the METIX-AC process very successfully extracted several metals from sludge (e.g., up to 87%, 72% and 66%, respectively for Cd, Cu and Zn), while preserving satisfactory levels of nutrients (e.g., less than 7% of lost TKN). The proposed process was, however, inefficient for extracting Cr and Pb. The mechanisms of metal removal from sludge and their leaching into drainage water are discussed. Decontaminated sludge ameliorated the water holding capacity of soil, reduced the total quantities of leachates, and produced drainage water of an acceptable quality.
