Observations on 56 specimens of Aratinga pertinax when bringing food to the beak prove that 28 birds were right-handed while the other 28 were left-handed. A biometric analysis reveals a slight departure from bilateral symmetry in hindlimb bones in close relationship with handedness. In the right-handed birds, there is a significant predominance in the length of the right hindlimb as a whole and all right limb segments. The opposite holds true in left-handed parrots (except for the femur). Right-handed birds are in general more highly asymmetrical than left-handed ones. There is a positive correlation between asymmetry of homologous segments of a pair of limbs and the asymmetry of the other segments of the same pair of limbs. The absence of significant negative correlations between bilateral differences of the different segments of a limb indicates that departures from bilateral symmetry tend to affect the limb as a whole, and thus is not in agreement with the rule of compensating variations.  相似文献

Diversity of Soil Yeasts Isolated from South Victoria Land,Antarctica   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Unicellular fungi, commonly referred to as yeasts, were found to be components of the culturable soil fungal population in Taylor Valley, Mt. Discovery, Wright Valley, and two mountain peaks of South Victoria Land, Antarctica. Samples were taken from sites spanning a diversity of soil habitats that were not directly associated with vertebrate activity. A large proportion of yeasts isolated in this study were basidiomycetous species (89%), of which 43% may represent undescribed species, demonstrating that culturable yeasts remain incompletely described in these polar desert soils. Cryptococcus species represented the most often isolated genus (33%) followed by Leucosporidium (22%). Principle component analysis and multiple linear regression using stepwise selection was used to model the relation between abiotic variables (principle component 1 and principle component 2 scores) and yeast biodiversity (the number of species present at a given site). These analyses identified soil pH and electrical conductivity as significant predictors of yeast biodiversity. Species-specific PCR primers were designed to rapidly discriminate among the Dioszegia and Leucosporidium species collected in this study.  相似文献

To dissect the genetic architecture of sexual dimorphism in obesity-related traits, we evaluated the sex–genotype interaction, sex-specific heritability and genome-wide linkages for seven measurements related to obesity. A total of 1,365 non-diabetic Chinese subjects from the family study of the Stanford Asia–Pacific Program of Hypertension and Insulin Resistance were used to search for quantitative trait loci (QTLs) responsible for the obesity-related traits. Pleiotropy and co-incidence effects from the QTLs were also examined using the bivariate linkage approach. We found that sex-specific differences in heritability and the genotype–sex interaction effects were substantially significant for most of these traits. Several QTLs with strong linkage evidence were identified after incorporating genotype by sex (G × S) interactions into the linkage mapping, including one QTL for hip circumference [maximum LOD score (MLS) = 4.22, empirical p = 0.000033] and two QTLs: for BMI on chromosome 12q with MLS 3.37 (empirical p = 0.0043) and 3.10 (empirical p = 0.0054). Sex-specific analyses demonstrated that these linkage signals all resulted from females rather than males. Most of these QTLs for obesity-related traits replicated the findings in other ethnic groups. Bivariate linkage analyses showed several obesity traits were influenced by a common set of QTLs. All regions with linkage signals were observed in one gender, but not in the whole sample, suggesting the genetic architecture of obesity-related traits does differ by gender. These findings are useful for further identification of the liability genes for these phenotypes through candidate genes or genome-wide association analysis.  相似文献

Prolonged exposure to aluminium may impact health. Aluminium’s deleterious effects are mostly attributed to its selective accumulation in particular organs and cell types. Occupational exposure to aluminium is allied with a reduced level of serum prolactin, a stress peptide hormone mainly synthesised and secreted by the anterior pituitary lactotrophs. Our aim was to study the effect of aluminium on the viability of rat lactotrophs in primary suspension cultures where multicellular aggregates tend to form, comprising approximately two thirds of the total cell population as confirmed by confocal microscopy. Flow cytometric light scattering of calcein acetoxymethyl ester and ethidium homodimer-1 labelled cells was used to define subpopulations of live and dead cells in heterogeneous suspensions comprised of single cells and multicellular aggregates of distinct size. Concentration-dependent effects of AlCl3 were observed on aggregate size and cell survival. After 24-h exposure to 3 mM AlCl3, viability of single cells declined from 5% to 3%, while in multicellular aggregates, viability declined from 23% to 20%. The proportion of single cells increased from 30% to 42% within the same concentration range, while in large aggregates, the proportion remained approximately constant representing 35% of the cell suspension. In large aggregates, cell viability (75%) remained unaltered after exposure to AlCl3 concentrations up to 300 μM, while in single cells, viability was halved at 30 μM. In conclusion, our finding indicates that prolonged exposure to aluminium may lead to significant loss of pituitary cells.  相似文献

Objective

Urease enzymes produced by oral bacteria generate ammonia, which can have a significant impact on the oral ecology and, consequently, on oral health. To evaluate the relationship of urease with dental plaque microbial profiles in children as it relates to dental caries, and to identify the main contributors to this activity.

Methods

82 supragingival plaque samples were collected from 44 children at baseline and one year later, as part of a longitudinal study on urease and caries in children. DNA was extracted; the V3–V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced using 454 pyrosequencing. Urease activity was measured using a spectrophotometric assay. Data were analyzed with Qiime.

Results

Plaque urease activity was significantly associated with the composition of the microbial communities of the dental plaque (Baseline P = 0.027, One Year P = 0.012). The bacterial taxa whose proportion in dental plaque exhibited significant variation by plaque urease levels in both visits were the family Pasteurellaceae (Baseline P<0.001; One Year P = 0.0148), especially Haemophilus parainfluenzae. No association was observed between these bacteria and dental caries. Bacteria in the genus Leptotrichia were negatively associated with urease and positively associated with dental caries (Bonferroni P<0.001).

Conclusions

Alkali production by urease enzymes primarily from species in the family Pasteurellaceae can be an important ecological determinant in children’s dental plaque. Further studies are needed to establish the role of urease-associated bacteria in the acid/base homeostasis of the dental plaque, and in the development and prediction of dental caries in children.  相似文献

Viruses are abundant in a variety of aquatic environments, often exceeding bacterial abundance by one order of magnitude. In the present study, the spatial distribution of viruses in offshore waters of the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean) have been studied to determine the relationships between viruses and host communities in this oligotrophic marine environment. Viral abundance was determined using two methods: (i) epifluorescence light microscopy using the dsDNA binding fluorochrome DAPI, and (ii) direct counts by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained were significantly different; the highest viral counts were obtained by mean of TEM analyses. In all the samples tested the number of viruses was exceeded by the bacterial concentrations, with a ratio between viral and bacterial titers varying between 1.4 and 20. VLP (virus-like particle) counts were not significantly correlated (p > 0.001) with chlorophyll a concentration or the abundance of cyanobacteria. However, there was a positive and significant correlation with bacterial abundance (p < 0.001). The analysis of size and morphology of viral particles by TEM and the correlation obtained between the numbers of VLP and bacteria suggest that the majority of the viral particles in the Alboran Sea are bacteriophages. None of the indirect evidence suggested that eukaryotic algae or cyanobacteria were important host organisms in these waters.  相似文献

In vitro morphogenesis of C. melo L. var. inodorus was studied by the induction of adventitious buds and somatic embryos. Organogenesis was obtained from cotyledon segments and leaf discs in culture medium supplemented with benzylaminopurine (1 mg l−1) and somatic embryogenesis was induced in medium containing 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (5 mg l−1) + thidiazuron (1 mg l−1). Through histological analysis it was possible to verify that in cotyledonary explants, protuberances that do not develop into well-formed shoot buds and leaf primordia are more frequently formed than complete shoot buds, resulting in a low frequency of plant recovery in the organogenic process. A high percentage of explants responded with the formation of somatic embryos; the microscopical analysis showed that the somatic embryos lacking well developed apical meristems had a low conversion rate into plants. Plant recovery was not obtained from leaf-disc explants, with high rates of contamination and formation of protuberances which did not develop into shoot buds. Histological sections showed the development of epidermis and leaf hairs, indicating those structures could be leaf primordia; however, these were not associated with a shoot apical meristem. The rapid melting of glacier cover is one of the most obvious impacts of climate change on alpine ecosystems and biodiversity. Our understanding of the impact of a decrease in glacier runoff on aquatic biodiversity is currently based on the ‘glacier‐heterogeneity‐diversity’ paradigm, according to which there is high α‐diversity at intermediate levels of glacial influence due to the high degree of environmental heterogeneity caused by glacier water. This α‐diversity pattern generates high levels of between‐site aquatic community variation (high β diversity) and increases regional diversity (γ‐diversity). There is a rich conceptual background in favor of this paradigm, but empirical data supporting it are scarce. We investigated this paradigm by analyzing the different diversity patterns (α, β and γ‐diversity) of four aquatic groups (zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, algae and macrophytes) living in high‐elevation peatlands (>4500 m above sea level). We sampled 200 pools from 20 peatlands along a glacier gradient in the Cordillera Real of Bolivia. We performed structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the potential mechanisms underlying the observed diversity patterns. Intermediate levels of glacial influence (15–20% cover) resulted in high heterogeneity, but α‐diversity responded to glacial influence only for the zooplankton group (Cladocera). Our SEM analysis did not identify environmental heterogeneity as a significant variable explaining the relationship between glacier and α‐diversity. Peatland area had a strong positive effect on heterogeneity and diversity. β‐diversity was significantly associated with glacier gradient, and 12.9% of the total regional diversity (γ‐diversity) was restricted to peatlands with a high degree of glacial influence. These species might be lost in a context of glacial retreat. These findings provide new insight into the potential effects of glacial retreat on the aquatic environment and biodiversity in the peatlands of the tropical Andes.  相似文献

DNA‐based protocols are the standard methods for the diagnosis of infected plant material. Nevertheless, these methods are time‐consuming and require trained personnel, with an efficacy depending on the sampling procedure. In comparison, recognition methods based on volatile compounds emissions are less precise, but allow a non‐destructive mass screening of bulk samples, and may be implemented to steer molecular diagnosis. In this study, the analysis of volatile compounds is used for the discrimination of fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) and blossom blight (Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae) on apple propagation material. Possible marker compounds were identified by gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC‐MS) and proton transfer reaction‐time of flight‐mass spectroscopy (PTR‐ToF‐MS). In addition, two commercial electronic noses were used for diagnosis. After a preliminary validation in vitro, a diagnostic protocol was successfully developed to scale up to real nursery conditions on cold stored, asymptomatic dormant plants.  相似文献
