It is sometimes argued that, from an ecological point of view, population-, community-, and ecosystem-level endpoints are more relevant than individual-level endpoints for assessing the risks posed by human activities to the sustainability of natural resources. Yet society values amenities provided by natural resources that are not necessarily evaluated or protected by assessment tools that focus on higher levels of biological organization. For example, human-caused stressors can adversely affect recreational opportunities that are valued by society even in the absence of detectable population-level reductions in biota. If protective measures are not initiated until effects at higher levels of biological organization are apparent, natural resources that are ecologically important or highly valued by the public may not be adequately protected. Thus, environmental decision makers should consider both scientific and societal factors in selecting endpoints for ecological risk assessments. At the same time, it is important to clearly distinguish the role of scientists, which is to evaluate ecological effects, from the role of policy makers, which is to determine how to address the uncertainty in scientific assessment in making environmental decisions and to judge what effects are adverse based on societal values and policy goals. 相似文献

Floating fens are species‐rich succession stages in fen areas in the Netherlands. Many of these fens are deteriorating due to acidification; Sphagnum species and Polytrichum commune build 10–25 cm thick moss carpets, and the species diversity decreases. Earlier experiments in wet ecosystems indicate that successful restoration of circum‐neutral and mesotrophic conditions requires a combination of hydrological measures and sod removal. In an acidified fen recharged by rainwater in the nature reserve Ilperveld (The Netherlands), a ditch/trench system was dug for the purpose of creating a run‐off channel for acid rainwater in wet periods and to enable circum‐neutral surface water to enter the fen in dry periods. Moreover, the sod was removed in part of the fen. Ditch/trench creation or sod cutting had no effect individually, but a combination of the two measures led to a change in the abiotic conditions (higher pH and Ca), and in turn to an increase of species‐richness and the reestablishment of a number of characteristic species. Reestablishment of rare vascular plant species and characteristic bryophytes might be a long‐term process because of incomplete recovery of site conditions and constraints in seed dispersal. 相似文献

In the Netherlands peat was excavated for fuel until 1950. This gave rise to waterbodies (called turf ponds) which were then colonized by aquatic plants. Succession resulted in different aquatic plant communities and more terrestrialized stages such as floating fens. Nature conservation authorities started to excavate new turf ponds in 1990(ca. 2 ha y–1) with the aim to restore calcareous, mesotraphent ecosystems by totally setting back succession. A sequence of new species was revealed by mapping the aquatic vegetation from 1990 onwards.Chara spp. proved early colonizers, which was not expected because they have not been present in ditches and ponds in the area for the last 20 years. The denseChara vegetation prevents the resuspension of organic soil and contributes to keep the water column nutrient-poor and clear. ability of species such asStratiotes aloides to colonise the ponds from adjacent waterbodies is not possible because no open contact exists between a turf pond and a ditch. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether ambulatory blood pressure eight weeks after withdrawal of antihypertensive medication is a more sensitive measure than seated blood pressure to predict blood pressure in the long term. DESIGN: Patients with previously untreated diastolic hypertension were treated with antihypertensive drugs for one year; these were withdrawn in patients with well controlled blood pressure, who were then followed for one year. SETTING: Primary care. SUBJECTS: 29 patients fulfilling the criteria for withdrawal of antihypertensive drugs. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value of seated and ambulatory blood pressure eight weeks after withdrawal of antihypertensive drugs. RESULTS: Eight weeks after withdrawal of medication, mean diastolic blood pressure returned to the pretreatment level on ambulatory measurements but not on seated measurements. One year after withdrawal of medication, mean diastolic blood pressure had returned to the pretreatment level both for seated and ambulatory blood pressure. For ambulatory blood pressure, the sensitivity and the positive predictive value eight weeks after withdrawal of medication were superior to those for seated blood pressure; specificity and negative predictive value were comparable for both types of measurement. Receiver operating characteristic curves showed that the results were not dependent on the cut off values that were used. CONCLUSION: Ambulatory blood pressure eight weeks after withdrawal of antihypertensive drugs predicts long term blood pressure better than measurements made when the patient is seated. 相似文献

The cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases constitute a complex superfamily of enzymes responsible for catalyzing the hydrolysis of cyclic nucleotides. Regulation of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases is one of the two major mechanisms by which intracellular cyclic nucleotide levels are controlled. In many cases the fluctuations in cyclic nucleotide cAMP-specific, calmodulin-stimulated and cGMP-binding phosphodiesterases have been demonstrated to be substrates for protein kinases. Here we review the evidence that hormonally responsive phosphorylation acts to regulate cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases. In particular, the cGMP-inhibited phosphodiesterases, which can be phosphorylated by at least two different protein kinases, are activated as a result of phosphorylation. In contrast, phosphorylation of the calmodulin-stimulated phosphodiesterases, which coincides with, a decreased sensitivity to activation by calmodulin, results in decreased phosphodiesterase activity. 相似文献

Question: Do severe winter flood events lift the nutrient limitation of biomass production in a river floodplain? How does this affect plant species richness? How long do the effects last? Location: Floodplain grassland on calcareous sandy loam near river Rhine in The Netherlands. Methods: Plots were fertilised with four treatments (control, N, P, N+P) for 21 years; plant species composition, vegetation biomass and tissue nutrient concentrations were determined every year between 1985 and 2005. Results: Fertilisation with N generally increased biomass production and reduced species richness, but these effects varied over time. During the first four years of the experiment, biomass production appeared to be co‐limited by N and P, while N fertilisation dramatically reduced plant species richness; these effects became weaker subsequently. Following two extreme winter floods in 1993–94 and 1994–95 and a drought in spring 1996, the effects of fertilisation disappeared between 1998 and 2001 and then appeared again. Flooding caused an overall reduction in species richness (from c. 24 to 15 species m‐2) and an increase in biomass production, which were only partly reversed after ten years. Conclusions: Long time series are necessary to understand vegetation dynamics and nutrient limitation in river floodplains, since they are influenced by occasional flood and drought events, whose effects may persist for more than ten years. A future increase in flooding frequency might be detrimental to species richness in floodplain grasslands. 相似文献

Climatic change has great impacts on stream catchments and their ecology. Expectations are that more extreme climate events
will result in undesired flooding in stream catchments. In the Netherlands, former floodplains with a history of agricultural
use are put into use again as flooding areas for the purpose of water retention. This study focuses on the effects of winter
flooding on various plant site conditions in the soil, such as redox, nutrient, pH, and base status. We compared the effects
on groundwater- and rainwater-dominated floodplains. Water chemistry (pH, EC, HCO3, SO4, Cl, Ca, Mg, Na, K,
, NO3, NH4, and PO4) and soil nutrients (Total N and P, and bio-available P) were monitored for one year, including a 3–4 month period with winter
flooding. In both floodplains no direct effect of the flood-water chemistry was detected in the pore water, because the soil
pores had become saturated with groundwater or rainwater, respectively, just before flooding, flood-water did not penetrate
the soil. We found that the increase in pH and ammonium concentration in the rainwater floodplain were due to changes in redox
status, resulting from the completely water-filled state of the soil pores during the flooding event. Furthermore, we noticed
an increase in soil nutrient contents and a shift in plant species composition in the rainwater floodplain: the vegetation
included more plant species characteristic for N-richness. Finally, we conclude that winter flooding has more drastic effects
on biogeochemical conditions and vegetation composition in the atmotrophic conditions characteristic for low-order subcatchments
than in lithotrophic conditions in the larger, higher-order subcatchments of the stream basin. 相似文献
